Chapter 5 When He Finally Cared

Penulis: Nina Fortune
"I can't believe you're capable of making such lies just to get attention!"

"I'm not lying! She really…" I practically crawled toward him, trying to grab the hem of his trousers. "Tristan, please. Take me to the hospital…"

"Enough!" he snapped. "I don't have time to indulge you or your melodramatic performance!"

With that, he turned around without hesitation and got back into the car.

The door slammed shut, and the black Rolls-Royce sped away before my tear-blurred eyes.

I had no idea how I managed to get to the hospital, but in the morgue, I clung to my grandmother's body and cried until my entire body convulsed.

No matter how hard I cried, I would never hear her gentle voice calling me Sylvia again.

During the days I endured my grief and arranged my grandmother's modest funeral alone, Tristan was busy keeping Regina company.

As I crouched in the funeral hall keeping vigil, a news alert appeared on my phone.

Tristan had made a high-profile appearance at a charity gala with Regina.

In the photos, his arm was wrapped around her waist, and his smile was gentle. Warm, in a way he had never once been with me.

As I carried my grandmother's urn through the cemetery, Regina posted a picture on social media of the limited-edition diamond bracelet he had given her.

The caption read, 'Thank you for loving me above everyone else, just as you always have.'

Even my father, who had never contacted me before, called to warn me.

"Sylvia, Mr. Chevalier paid off all my debts! I know I was wrong before… Look, Mr. Chevalier's heart still belongs to Regina after all. So, just divorce him and give him back to your sister, alright?"

I was dead inside at that point, so I answered with a flat "okay," and then hung up, ignoring his astonishment.

After taking care of everything related to my grandmother's funeral, I went straight to a private hospital.

"Have you made up your mind? You don't want the baby?" the doctor asked routinely.

After my father had drugged me and sent me to Tristan's bed, I had originally intended to leave without looking back.

But then my grandmother was diagnosed with cancer and needed an astronomical amount of money for treatment.

With nowhere else to turn, I had agreed to Donna's demand: I would give the Chevalier family a child in exchange for one hundred billion dollars and my freedom.

Now that my grandmother was gone, I no longer wanted the child I had conceived through humiliation and endurance.

I signed the divorce papers and had them delivered to Chevalier Manor. Then, I bought the fastest available one-way ticket to a distant island.

While waiting at the airport, my phone suddenly vibrated.

For once, I received a message from Tristan.

'I passed by a jewelry store yesterday and saw a bracelet. It'll be your belated birthday present. I've already had my assistant transfer the medical expenses to you, so stop throwing a tantrum and come home. The house is a mess without you, and I'm not used to it.

'And… about the baby, we'll discuss it when you come home. If you can accept a divorce, I'll allow you to give birth to him. But as for me… I'm sorry. I can't return your feelings. I hope you understand.'

I forced a smile that looked worse than crying and calmly replied, 'You don't need to, Tristan. It's all too late now.'

I hit send.

Then I removed my SIM card, threw it into a trash can at the airport, and walked toward the boarding gate without looking back.

Tristan stood there irritably with the bracelet in his hand, waiting for a long time.

When the call finally came, even he did not realise that he had let out a breath of relief.

He answered eagerly, only to hear his assistant's panicked voice on the other end.

"We have a problem, sir! When I went to pay the medical expenses, the hospital told me that Mrs. Chevalier's grandmother had already passed away.

"And I also found out that Mrs. Chevalier terminated her pregnancy at the same hospital yesterday afternoon…"

  • Too Late to Keep Her   Chapter 10 Watching Her Be Happy

During a lull in the movie, my boyfriend picked up his phone and casually scrolled through it before letting out a soft scoff. "Some lunatic is livestreaming his search for his missing wife, and apparently it's become a huge sensation. He's looking for someone named Sylvia Jefferson. Funny, her name's the same as yours."I leaned over to take a look at the screen. The man on it looked disheveled and almost frantic, his expression bordering on madness. I frowned, but all I felt was genuine unfamiliarity and confusion. "I don't know him. He looks kind of pitiful, but what does that have to do with me? Turn it off. It's ruining the mood."…Tristan practically turned the entire world upside down before he finally found a trace of me six months later in a small seaside town.He rushed there, exhausted from the journey. He had imagined countless possible scenarios for our reunion. I might hate him. I might curse him out and tell him to get lost. He had even prepared himself to knee

Tristan stared blankly at the agreement lying on the floor. His gaze shifted to the donation records and medical documents belonging to Sylvia scattered around it, before finally landing on the series of disgraceful photographs of Regina…"Ugh!"A rush of metallic sweetness surged up his throat, and he abruptly coughed up a mouthful of blood.Donna didn’t even look at the grandson she had once adored. Without a word, she turned and walked away.…Tristan woke up in the hospital with the sensation that someone had torn a gaping hole straight through his heart. The hospital room was empty. The only sound was his assistant's trembling report: Regina had emptied a large amount of cash and jewelry from his safe and fled."Find her. Turn the entire city upside down if you have to. Bring her back to me!"Within 24 hours, Regina was dragged before him by the bodyguards, looking utterly wretched. Her hair was disheveled, her expensive dress stained, all while clutching a backpack stuf

  • Too Late to Keep Her   Chapter 8 Now You're Free

"Haven't you been demanding a divorce?" Donna's voice was cold. "There, happy? You're a free man now. From now on, I don't care if you want to marry this lying wretch or some random stray off the street! The Chevalier family has no place for a progeny like you, who can't tell right from wrong!"Tristan stood rooted to the spot as though he'd been struck by a spell. His eyes remained fixed on Sylvia's name written on the donation agreement. One overlooked detail after another surged into his mind like a tidal wave. The way Sylvia had repeatedly looked at him as though she wanted to say something but couldn't… The message he had dismissed as a lie… She had gone so far as to shield him from drinking, even when her weakened body—still recovering from the bone marrow donation—eventually made her vomit blood…He remembered how she had nearly fainted after having blood drawn, her body still needing time to recover and replenish the blood cells lost during the transfusion…Her pa

Donna completely ignored Tristan's attempt to greet her. Her gaze remained fixed on Regina, who was disheveled and shrinking fearfully into Tristan's arms.Bringing her cane down heavily against the floor, she barked an order at the bodyguards. "Drag that lying, conniving wretch over here and teach her a lesson!"Immediately, two bodyguards stepped forward and dragged her out of Tristan's arms without the slightest regard for Regina's protests."What are you doing? Let go of me! Tristan, save me!" Regina screamed, her face drained of colour as tears streamed down her cheeks.A sharp slap landed hard across Regina's face, instantly leaving a vivid imprint on her cheek.Only then did Tristan finally snap out of his daze. He shot to his feet and pulled the staggering Regina behind him, shielding her with his body. "Grandma! What do you mean by this? What did Regina do wrong for you to treat her like this? "Since you're here today, I'll make myself clear once and for all! The on

"Nonsense!" Tristan shot to his feet, the veins at his temples bulging as he roared into the phone. "Did a brick fall on your head, Logan? Can't you tell when she's trying to pull another stunt? She'll say anything just to get my attention! And you actually believed this pathetic act she put on with the hospital?"His chest heaved violently. As though he were trying to convince himself, his voice grew increasingly certain and furious. "She loves me enough to throw her own life away! She would never terminate her pregnancy! "She's trying to force my hand, using this despicable trick to force my hand! She's just jealous because I've been spending these days with Regina and ignoring her!"He shouted at his assistant, who was practically frozen with fear on the other end of the line. "If she won't appreciate kindness, then we'll do this the hard way! Go find Nicholson immediately and have him draft the divorce papers! I'll show her exactly what happens when she plays with fire! I
