Too Late to Love Me
Penulis: Nameless

Chapter 1

Penulis: Nameless
Nigel Jackman stood in the entryway with a slight frown, looking like he was waiting for me to start a fight with him like I always did.

He had every reason to expect one. For the past 20 years, whenever another woman got too close to him, I made a huge scene.

And today of all days, he had finally picked up his Porsche Panamera.

I'd spent three months living on boxed mac and cheese with him and helped him put together more business proposals than I could count. In the end, I helped him land the big project that paid enough for him to buy the car outright.

But the second he got the keys, he let Ruby Barnett take the passenger seat and left me standing outside the pizzeria by myself.

"You really don't mind?"

Nigel slipped off his shoes, put on his house slippers, and walked over to study my face.

I kept my head down, folding clothes into my suitcase without even looking at him.

"Not at all. Ms. Barnett's pretty delicate. Of course you should take extra care of her."

Nigel's frown deepened. Before I could finish folding the sweater, he reached over and pressed his hand over mine.

"Sasha, don't use that sarcastic tone with me. Ruby isn't just a clean freak. She has severe asthma, and the smell from that pizzeria of yours clings to you. It's strong enough to trigger an attack.

"If you're mad about what happened, I'll take you shopping tomorrow and get you that bag you've been wanting. Okay?"

That bag?

I looked at his handsome face and the impatience written all over it, and suddenly, the whole thing seemed almost funny.

I'd had my eye on that bag since last month, but I'd held off on buying it because I was saving up for a gift to celebrate his new car.

Meanwhile, the first time Nigel met Ruby, he gave her a custom necklace worth over 100,000 dollars.

"No thanks. I don't need a bag."

I gently pulled my hand free and tucked the last sweater into my suitcase. Only then did Nigel notice the luggage on the floor.

His expression hardened. "Sasha Tenney, what now? Are you seriously packing up and leaving again?"

He only called me by my full name when he was getting angry.

"Every time I don't give you exactly what you want, you pack your bags and run back to the old place like it's the end of the world. You're 25, Sasha. Can you please act like an adult?"

I zipped up the suitcase, stood, and met his eyes. "I'm not going anywhere. I'm just taking some clothes to the dry cleaner now that the seasons are changing."

Nigel paused. He tugged at his tie, still irritated, but his voice softened again.

"Fine. I was wrong today. I shouldn't have left you out in the rain. My stomach's been hurting all day, so make me some toast with two fried eggs."

He said it like it was a given, completely sure I'd feel sorry for him and head straight for the kitchen.

But when I looked at the hand pressed against his stomach, all I could think about was what had happened that afternoon.

"Go back to that empty Porsche Panamera of yours and enjoy your high-class life where no one smells too 'low-class' for you," I said. Then I turned and strode into the restaurant kitchen, leaving Nigel behind in the snow, crying out after me.That was the last time I ever spoke to him. After that day, Nigel seemed like a different person. He stopped coming after me, but he never went back home either.I heard he sold off everything he owned back home and rented a basement apartment in Pavrelle's market district. He spent his days wandering the streets. He traded his expensive custom suits for an old coat faded from countless washes.Every day, he bought cheap ingredients from a neighborhood grocery store, went back to his basement, and tried to make pizza from scratch.Nothing ever came out right. It was either burned or so salty it was almost bitter. He forced himself to eat it anyway. He would eat until he threw up, then start eating again. Eventually, his stomach started ble

Nigel's hands were covered in small knife cuts, and blood had stained the wooden handle red."Sasha, I made you another one. It's not as nice as the old one, but I'll keep practicing until I can make one you like."He looked at me, a hint of hope in his eyes.I looked down at the bloodstained wooden spatula and suddenly found the whole thing ridiculous."Do you really think this makes up for what you did, Nigel?"I looked him straight in the eye."When you were protecting Ruby, you treated my recipe book like it was garbage. Now that you know she lied to you, you come running back and carve me another spatula."You don't love me. You just can't stand being lied to, and you can't stand that your loyal little lapdog stopped coming whenever you called."Nigel went pale and shook his head desperately. "No! I really do love you! I was just too stupid before. I didn't realize how I truly felt about you—""Enough!" I snapped, hurling the wooden spatula at his feet."You keep saying

I was smiling, genuinely happy in a way Nigel hadn't seen in years. The greasy apron was gone, and so was the smell of the pizzeria that always clung to me. Standing under the bright lights, I looked so different that he almost didn't recognize me."Sasha…"His voice shook as he stumbled toward me.The second I heard him, my smile disappeared.I turned to look at him. His face was covered in stubble, and his eyes were bloodshot. To me, though, he looked like a complete stranger.Nigel hurried toward me and reached out to pull me into his arms, but Luke Eyre, the Valennian head chef beside me, stepped between us."Sir, what are you doing?"Luke frowned and blocked Nigel from getting any closer.Nigel ignored him completely. His eyes stayed fixed on me, quickly turning red."Sasha, I finally found you. Please come home with me. I got rid of Ruby, and the Barnetts are bankrupt now. I made them pay for what they did to you!"He rambled on, begging me with all his usual pride gon

Three months after I left, Nigel's life was a mess. His stomach problems kept getting worse. No one else could make the kind of soup that settled his stomach the way mine did.Ruby tried cooking for him a few times, but her obsession with cleanliness made it a struggle. She wore three pairs of medical gloves just to chop vegetables, and whatever she made was practically inedible.Nigel also started losing sleep. Every time he closed his eyes, all he could see was the empty look in my eyes as I watched the wooden box get crushed. He searched everywhere for me and contacted everyone he could think of, but all he learned was that I'd closed all my accounts back home and vanished without a trace. Then one night, Nigel left a private club after dinner with some clients. He drove through a run-down block packed with cheap eateries and food trucks. He glanced out the window and caught sight of a familiar figure. He slammed on the brakes.Ruby was sitting at a table beside a food truck

The apartment was eerily quiet, and the sour smell of spoiled food hung in the air.Nigel frowned and called out without thinking, "Sasha, what did you leave out?"No one answered. He changed into his house slippers and walked into the living room. That was when he realized all my things were gone. The throw pillows I always left lying around, the clothes I usually hung up to dry, even my toothbrush by the bathroom sink had disappeared. His heart skipped a beat, and a chill ran down his spine. He hurried to the dining table and spotted the note beneath the apartment key."The soup's on the stove. Have it while it's hot."My handwriting was as neat as ever, but the message suddenly felt cold. His hand started to shake. He rushed into the kitchen and pulled the lid off the pot.His favorite chicken noodle soup was inside, but it had been sitting there for three full days. Green mold covered the surface, and the stench made his stomach turn.Nigel doubled over the sink and thre

"Ruby's still waiting for you. Better get back to her before she catches a whiff of my 'low-class' smell," I said.I braced myself against the wall and got to my feet, careful not to put too much weight on my injured leg.Ruby walked over and held out a tissue, a smug look in her eyes. "Sasha, don't blame Nigel. He's only trying to help you. If you smell like a pizzeria every day, who'd want to marry you?"I didn't take the tissue. I just looked her straight in the eye. "Ruby, you'd better hope you can spend the rest of your life without ever setting foot in a kitchen."Then I turned and limped out into the rain.Nigel shouted after me, "Sasha Tenney! If you walk away today, don't expect me to ever let you back in!"I didn't turn around or slow down.Back at the apartment, I sorted through my things. In the end, all I took were a few clothes I wore regularly and my acceptance letter from Valenne Culinary Academy. I left everything else behind.I took one last look around the a
