Chapter 1

I remember how I broke all the protocol and had broken through the holy sanctuary—a place reserved exclusively for dying wolves and solemn ancestral prayer— my last hope. If I could just dip Jenna into the luminescent waters, the moon’s grace would pull the dark veins from her skin.

I pushed open the heavy oak gates of the holy ground, sobbing, ready to beg the ancestors for forgiveness.

The sound that met me wasn’t solemn prayer. It was laughter.

Water splashed against the ancient carved marble pillars. In the center of the crystal pool—the sacred pool whose waters were measured out drop by drop to save lives—swam Chloe, Lucian’s childhood friend, and her young son. They were tossing ancestral relic pearls into the water like toys, splashing around, using the sacred healing ground like a private resort pool.

On the edge sat Lucian. He was pouring blood-wine into a goblet, laughing as Chloe splashed him.

"Lucian!" I gasped, my voice breaking.

He turned, his brows pulling into a deep frown of immediate annoyance. "Lyla? How dare you step onto the holy grounds without permission? And why are you bringing your unrefined chaos here?"

"Jenna... she’s dying," I sobbed, holding our limp boy out toward him. "The Ash Fever. The elder denied my application because of your locks. Please, Lucian, let me put her in the water!"

Chloe’s son quickly pooled the water around himself, pouting softly. "Uncle Alpha, she’s ruining our afternoon... You promised today was just for us to relax after my first year result day."

Lucian’s gaze hardened into ice. He stepped between me and the water. "Enough of your dramatic antics, Lyla. You think you can break protocol, feign an illness, and barge in here to ruin Leo’s celebration day? You haven’t changed at all. Still reckless, still manipulative."

"Look at her!" I shrieked, pulling back the blanket to show Jenna’s graying lips and the black veins creeping up her neck. "Look at your daughter!"

A flicker of something like worry crossed his eyes. He swept his gaze down towards Jenna. But before he could take one step closer to us, Chloe screamed from behind.

“Lucian… Leo is drowning!"

Lucian immediately turned back. He swooped Leo into his arms and helped him out.

“Call all the pack healers to Chloe’s quarters. Everyone of them. Quickly!” He commanded before turning to look at me, his eyes reflecting lethal fury. "I am sick of your constant attempts to bypass my authority. You will return to the manor immediately and await your punishment. If you hadn't distracted me, Leo would have been just fine."

He was still fine. The water level was below his waist, and Lucian had spent the entire summer teaching him swimming. How could he possibly be drowned?

Guess Lucian was too blind to see that.

As he forced me out the heavy gates, the truth hit me with the force of a physical blow.

It was never about making me a better Luna. It was never about teaching me restraint or honoring procedure. It was about stripping my power, controlling my every breath, and keeping me bound while he paved the path for Chloe.

I dragged Jenna’s small body down the mountain on foot, trying to warm her with my own body heat. But by the time the moon reached its peak, the thin thread of her life snapped. In the silent, frozen woods, her chest stopped moving.

I didn't cry.

The fire inside me didn't burn; it turned to ash.

Sitting beside my dead child, I reached deep into my soul, located the shining, golden thread of the mate bond connecting my heart to

Lucian's, and pulled a jagged piece of dark magic I had hidden for years.

‘With blood and breath, I break what the moon forged.’

I severed the bond. The pain was excruciating, like ripping my own heart from my ribcage, but I didn't make a sound. When it was done, the silence in my head was total.

I returned home looking like a ghost. Lucian was in the main hall, commanding his subordinates.

I didn't look at him. I simply walked past him, heading towards Jenna’s room to pick up her toys. I didn't want her to go alone. I couldn't comfort her while she was dying. Perhaps she would feel less scared if her favourite toys were there to accompany her in her funeral.

I didn't notice when Lucian chased after me. Shutting the door behind my back, he snapped, “What's this attitude, Lyla?”

“Despite knowing how you feign Jenna’s sickness just to interrupt Leo’s big day, I had someone deliver you the holy water, and this is how you pay it back?”

“You and you should understand that I will not tolerate this behaviour ever again. The holy water is precious. Not something you two can waste around.”

“Waste around?” I gritted my teeth. “And you still think I was feigning our daughter’s sickness? And for what?”

“We both know you felt jealous because I allowed Chloe and Leo in the sanctuary.” He replied, his voice devoid of any emotion. “Leo has just witnessed his father's death, Lyla. He is pitiful. You must understand.”

He later sighed. His voice softened as he added, “Where is Jenna, by the way? Call her and ask her to write an apology letter along with you. She must learn etiquette.”

The years flowed like water over jagged rock, smoothing nothing, changing only the shape of Lucian’s despair. He had abdicated his title as Alpha, bestowing the mantle upon Mark—the only man left whose hands weren't stained by the silence of complacency. Unburdened by a throne he no longer deserved, Lucian wandered. He became a ghost in his own land, trailing across territories, mountain passes, and forgotten human villages. He searched not as a lord seeking a lost treasure, but as a penitent seeking his absolution. Every face in a crowd made his breath catch; every whisper in the wind sounded like Lyla’s quiet, weeping voice. It took seven winter frosts before he finally found me.I lived at the edge of a pine forest in the far north, in a small, solitary cabin blanketed by deep snow. The air there was crisp and quiet, devoid of pack politics, dominance, or malice. When Lucian stepped into the clearing, the snow crunching beneath his heavy boots, the cabin door creaked open. I stepped

The next morning as Lucian returned, disheartened and lost, Mark had been waiting for him. “Alpha Lucian!” He spoke up as soon as his gaze landed on a broken man who didn't look like an Alpha anymore. “Are… are you alright?” Mark leaned to help Lucian walk who had been stumbling on his legs. But, he pushed him away, “Why are you here… alone? Where is Lyla?” Mark sighed, “I’m here to report to you everything that I have investigated, Alpha.”“The memory orb, it was not faltered, Alpha. It showed the memories of the last days of Lady Jenna… she really suffered a lot!” He added, his voice hoarse. “And… It was not the first time Leo had bullied her in the school. In fact, he had been hurting Lady Jenna since their first day and Lady Chloe had been backing him up, threatening little Jenna not to speak about it.” “You must do justice to Lady Jenna, Alpha!” Mark begged, “She died in agony.” Lucian clenched his hands into fists. He recalled how once he used to treat his wife and daughter

The silence inside the Alpha Manor was louder than the loudest roar of a thunderstorm.Lucian pushed open the massive front doors, his legs heavy as lead as he stepped into the foyer. For years, this house had been filled with the delicate scent of wild lilies and fresh rain, mixed with the faint, sweet smell of baby powder. Now, there was only the stale, suffocating scent of Chloe’s lingering perfume and the dust settling in the dim afternoon light. He walked aimlessly through the grand hallways, every step echoing like a hollow drum. He stopped at the entrance of the living room, his eyes falling on the plush velvet sofa.Memory hit him like a physical blow.He remembered Lyla sitting there late into the night, nursing Jenna while waiting for him to return from patrol. She used to smile at him—that soft, gentle smile that had once been his absolute solace—no matter how exhausted she was. But after Chloe had arrived, claiming her son Leo was sick and needed the protection of the pack

‘She's waiting for me,’His mind repeated in a loop, a desperate mantra keeping him from falling into the black abyss threatening to consume him. Lyla is just testing me. She wants me to beg. She took Jenna to the Sunken Valley to force me to choose her over Chloe. He shoved past Chloe without a word, stepping on the edge of her dress and ripping the silk. She fell forward with a gasp, but Lucian didn't slow down. He strode out into the night, his heart hammering violently against his ribs."Alpha, wait!" Mark sprinted after him, trying to keep up with Lucian's furious, trembling pace as he mounted his horse, abandoning the slow carriage altogether. "The Sunken Valley is perilous at night, and the pack elders are demanding an immediate trial—""I don't care!" Lucian bellowed, digging his heels into the steed's sides. "I am going to bring my wife and daughter home!"He galloped into the darkness, leaving behind the furious shouts of his pack, racing against a truth he refused to accept.

The hall was engulfed in a suffocating silence as Lucian sank to his knees, his hands trembling violently against the cold marble floor."She's lying," he whispered, his voice cracking into a raw, frantic wheeze. He looked up at the circle of horrified faces, searching for any shred of doubt in their eyes. "Lyla is playing a game! She used illusion magic on the candle! She's trying to ruin me!"Before anyone could answer, a blinding beam of silver light burst through the heavy stained-glass windows of the pack house.A low hum vibrated through the floorboards as the light coalesced into a massive, shimmering sphere above the altar—a Memory Orb, an ancient water-and-moon magic ritual used only to broadcast undeniable truths to an entire territory.Gasps erupted as the orb expanded, projecting a crystal-clear, three-dimensional memory into the sky above the pack lands. It was a memory not just visible to those in the room, but cast wide across the entire valley for every member of the we

The silence on the other end of the mind-link snapped like dry tinder.Lucian’s fury rushed back through the tether, hot and suffocating. ‘Sunken Valley?! Are you out of your mind, Lyla? You blew off your own coronation—the crown I fought the elders to grant you—for a damn field trip?’I could hear the background roar of the pack courtyard through the link: the murmur of confused guests, the rustle of fine silk, the impatient shuffling of the elders.‘You bring her back right now,’ Lucian ordered, his voice echoing with the full, crushing weight of his Alpha aura. ‘I don't care if you have to drag her. You are humiliating me in front of the entire high council! This petty silent treatment ends today. If you aren't at the altar in twenty minutes, I swear to God, Lyla, I will strip you of the Luna title permanently!’I didn't flinch. The Luna’s title he was threatening me for, I had abandoned it days ago. I simply severed the link, severing the psychic wire between us after dropping one
