Katrina tried to catch her breath. Her lips tingled, her ears burned, and warmth flooded her face. She stood there, dazed, her chest rising too fast, her thoughts scattered.Jace's hand came up slowly, sliding into her hair. His fingers threaded through the strands gently, grounding her, lifting her gaze until her eyes met his.“Is your mum alright? A quiet sigh of relief escaped Holly's lips upon seeing him there on time.Lexi's expression tightened instantly. Displeasure flickered across her face, quick and ugly. She had come to corner Katrina, to humiliate her and stop her from getting closer to Jace, but seeing him here, she knew she had lost that chance.“What's going on here?” Jace asked calmly, his gaze sweeping the room.Lexi recovered quickly. She smoothed her features into a smile that didn't reach her eyes and stepped toward him.“I came along because Holly asked me to,” she said sweetly. “We just wanted to check on Katrina's mom.” Her eyes shifted to Katrina as she said her name.Holly's eyes widened a fraction at the lie, but she said nothing, watching the act in amusement. For a moment, there was silence, then she moved closer to Lexi.“Now that you're here, Jace, we should leave,” she said and tried to pull Lexi alon
