Mara’s POV

Daniel was already at the café when I arrived.

He didn't look up from his laptop, but he pushed a fresh coffee across the table before I even sat down.

That was Daniel, always three steps ahead, always quietly making sure I didn't fall apart before I was ready to.

"Legal confirmed the transfer," he said. "His team moved faster than I expected."

"He wants me gone." I wrapped both hands around the mug. "Speed is how he shows urgency."

"One point eight billion, Mara." He finally looked up. "Even I didn't think he'd agree without a fight."

"He didn't fight because he didn't think I was worth fighting." I took a sip. "That's always been his miscalculation."

Daniel closed the laptop, his expression shifted into the one I knew meant he was about to say something I didn't want to hear.

"The clinic called again."

I set the mug down.

"I told them I'd handle it," he said. "But they're asking for a forwarding address for the follow-up records, standard protocol apparently."

"Give them the Meridian PO box."

"And if Ethan's lawyers subpoena the clinic?"

"On what grounds?" I kept my voice level. "We're not in litigation, we're in a clean divorce. He paid, I'll sign. There's no reason for anyone to go looking."

Daniel didn't look convinced, he had a way of worrying that was almost architectural, like he could see the weak points in a plan before they became visible to anyone else. It was why I trusted him. It was also why he occasionally drove me insane.

"You're eleven weeks," he said quietly.

"I know how far along I am."

"He's going to find out eventually."

"Eventually is not now." I met his eyes. "Now, I need the accounts clean, the apartment in Lisbon confirmed, and my name off everything tied to Croft Industries before the divorce finalizes. Can you do that?"

He held my gaze for a beat too long.

"Already done," he said.

The papers arrived by courier at four, there were not the divorce papers because those were still sitting on the marble desk in the penthouse, which had given me a quiet, private satisfaction all morning.

These were the asset transfer documents. Forty-one pages, tabbed and flagged, with a yellow sticky note on the front that said Sign all flagged pages in the handwriting of someone who got paid eight hundred dollars an hour.

I poured a glass of water, sat at the kitchen counter, and read every single word, page nineteen stopped me.

I read the clause twice, then a third time. In the event that either party is found to have withheld material information relevant to the dissolution of the marital estate, all transferred assets shall be subject to full recovery at the discretion of the transferring party.

I put the document down.

Material information, the lawyers had buried it on page nineteen, in the middle of a paragraph about property disclosure, where most people wouldn't think to look. Where a woman who'd agreed to the number and just wanted out wouldn't look.

He knew or suspected.

I picked up my phone and called Daniel, he answered on the first ring. "I saw it."

"Page nineteen."

"It's a trap clause," he said. "Standard in high-value dissolutions when the paying party thinks the other side is holding something."

"He doesn't know what he thinks I'm holding." My voice was steady but my pulse wasn't. "He just knows something's off."

"What do you want to do?"

I stood up and walked to the window. Different apartment, same city, same indifferent skyline.

"I want to sign everything except page nineteen," I said. "Flag it as a contested clause and send it back."

"That'll slow things down."

"Good." I watched a plane cross the grey sky, small and unhurried. "Let him think I'm being difficult about the money. Let his lawyers spend a week arguing about asset disclosure language."

"And while they're arguing?"

"I find out who told him to add that clause." I paused. "Someone gave him a reason to be suspicious, Daniel. Find out who."

I was back at the penthouse by seven to collect the last of my things, It had seemed easier to do it while Ethan was still traveling. No conversation, performance, pretending the sight of his half of the closet didn't still produce a dull ache somewhere below my ribs that I hadn't yet managed to logic away.

I moved quickly to my clothes, documents, the small collection of books I'd kept on the nightstand. The framed photograph of my mother that had sat on the dresser for three years without him ever asking who she was. I was wrapping it in a sweater when I heard the elevator. I stopped.

The doors opened, footsteps. The particular unhurried rhythm of someone who'd never had to rush because the world had always waited for him.

Ethan appeared in the bedroom doorway, he looked at the open suitcase on the bed, at the half-empty shelves, and then at me.

"You're early," he said.

"You're supposed to be in Zurich."

"Flight was delayed." He leaned against the doorframe, jacket gone, sleeves rolled to the elbows, and watched me with that expression I'd never been able to fully decode. "I would have called ahead, but I didn't think you'd still have a key."

"I don't," I said. "Your housekeeper let me in."

"Ah." He was quiet for a moment. "Mrs. Alves always liked you."

I didn't respond, I folded the sweater around the frame and set it carefully in the case.

"The contested clause," he said.

"My lawyers flagged it as overreaching," I said without turning around. "It's a standard objection."

"It's a delaying tactic." His voice was even, he was not angry, it sounded like something more careful than angry. "You're not afraid of the clause, Mara. You're afraid of what triggered it."

I turned around.

He was still in the doorway, still leaning and watching me with those dark eyes that had never once given anything away for free.

"What did trigger it?" I asked.

"You tell me."

I held his gaze, the room felt smaller than it was, all that careful distance I'd built between us suddenly compressed into ten feet of air and the low evening light coming through the curtains.

"I have nothing to disclose," I said.

"Then sign page nineteen."

"My lawyers"

"Sign it, Mara." His voice dropped. He was not threatening, it was quieter than that. "If there's nothing to hide, it costs you nothing."

I picked up the suitcase handle and kept my face smooth.

"Send the revised documents by Friday," I said. "I'll have my team review them."

I crossed the room toward the door, he didn't move from the frame, then I stopped a foot away and waited.

He searched my face for a long moment the way he had in the study yesterday, hunting for the fracture, the tell, the place where the performance slipped. Then he stepped aside.

I was halfway down the hall when he spoke.

"I found the clinic receipt."

I stopped walking.

The words landed quietly, the way the heaviest things always do.

"It was in the jacket you sent to the dry cleaner." His voice came from behind me, calm and deliberate. "The one you borrowed last month when it rained, you forgot to check the pockets."

I didn't turn around.

"It had your name on it," he said. "A date and the name of a specialist I've never heard of." A pause that lasted exactly long enough. "What kind of specialist, Mara?"

My hand tightened on the suitcase.

Outside, somewhere below us, the city continued its indifferent hum, taxis and foot traffic and the ordinary machinery of people living lives that had nothing to do with this hallway, this moment, this question hanging in the air between us like smoke.

I had prepared for many things, but I had not prepared for a receipt.

"Goodnight, Ethan," I said.

I walked to the elevator, pressed the button and stared at the closed doors and did not breathe properly until they opened and I stepped inside and the gap between us became a wall became a floor became twenty-three floors of empty air.

My phone buzzed in my coat pocket, it was Daniel. I answered without speaking.

"Mara." His voice was wrong, too tight. "We have a problem."

"I know," I said.

"He called the clinic."

The elevator hit the lobby.

"How long ago?" I asked.

"Twenty minutes." He paused. "They wouldn't confirm anything, patient confidentiality. But Mara, his lawyer called them eleven minutes later."

The doors opened, I walked through the lobby, through the glass doors, into the cold night air.

"He already knew before he saw me tonight," I said quietly.

"Yes."

I stopped on the pavement. Across the street, his building rose into the dark sky, all lit windows and clean lines.

"He was testing me," I said.

"Yes."

I stood there for one second. Two.

"Change the clinic records to the Meridian address tonight." My voice was steady. "And Daniel, find out who's been

talking."

Because someone had given Ethan Croft a reason to call that clinic. And whoever it was had just made everything significantly more complicated.

My phone beeped just as I stepped out of the Uber.Distracted, I barely paid attention to where I was going, my eyes fixed on the glowing screen as I read the message. It was Richard.Richard: I’ll be hosting a private fine-dining dinner the day after tomorrow in celebration of my recovery. Richard glanced at me, his eyes lingering on my outfit for a moment longer than I would have liked.“You’ve changed your style of dressing,” he remarked. “You wear big clothes now. That’s new.”I forced a casual smile, resisting the urge to tug at the oversized fabric covering my stomach.“I just prefer this style now. It’s more comfortable.”His eyes narrowed slightly, but thankfully, he didn't press the issue.“Let’s begin with what we’re here for,” he said, immediately shifting the conversation.Relief washed over me.The last thing I needed was Richard becoming suspicious. At fourteen weeks, my belly bump had finally begun to show, and hiding it beneath loose-fitting clothes was becoming increasingly difficult. My carefully laid-out plan was slowly beginning to unravel. But I couldn't let it.Not yet.I had come too far.Faith was the only thing keeping me going.Richard continued speaking, but his words gradually faded into the background as my thoughts consumed me. Richard just called.I sent the message to Daniel, my fingers barely leaving the screen before his reply came through.“What’s his deal?”He responded so swiftly, it was almost as though he had been waiting for me to reach out.I continued pacing slowly across the room, my arms crossed tightly over my chest.“He says it’s better off speaking face to face.”I frowned.“That’s fishy don't you think?,” I sent another text A few seconds later, Daniel replied.“Really fishy.
