CHAPTER 3:The Leak

Mara's POV

The leak had a name by morning.

Daniel sent it in a single text at six forty-three, no preamble, no softening: Sofia Reyes, your housekeeper's daughter. She's been on Ethan's assistant's payroll for three months.

I read it twice, sitting on the edge of the bed in my temporary apartment, still in yesterday's clothes, coffee untouched on the nightstand.

Sofia, twenty-two years old, shy smile, always offered to carry my dry cleaning down to the lobby.

I typed back: How deep?

“Deep enough, she photographed documents from your desk twice. The receipt was probably photographed before it ever reached the dry cleaner.”

I set the phone down.

She'd been watching me for three months, which meant Ethan's suspicion hadn't started yesterday. It hadn't started with the receipt. It had started sometime around the time I'd begun making quiet, careful preparations to leave, and someone had noticed before I thought anyone was paying attention.

I picked the phone back up.

“Does she know what she photographed?”

“Doubt it, she's not sophisticated enough to understand what the clinic visit meant, she was just collecting.”

I stood up, walked to the window. Grey morning, thin light, the city already moving below.

The problem wasn't Sofia. Sofia was replaceable, manageable, already neutralized the moment I knew her name. The problem was the three-month gap, everything she might have seen, photographed, passed along without understanding what she was handing over.

I needed to know exactly how exposed I was.

I need a full list, I typed, everything she could have accessed, every document, call log, appointment on my calendar going back ninety days.

“That's going to take time.” Daniel said.

“You have until tonight.” I replied

My lawyer called at nine.

"They've pushed back on the contested clause," Margaret said, her voice carrying the particular briskness of someone who billed by the six-minute increment and resented small talk. "His team is refusing to remove it, they're calling it non-negotiable."

"Then we negotiate around it." I poured the cold coffee down the sink and started a fresh cup. "Counter with a mutual disclosure clause. If I have to declare material information, so does he.”

"That's aggressive," Margaret said.

"He started it."

"Mara." Her voice shifted slightly. "Is there something I need to know? Before this goes further?"

I measured my words the way I measured everything now, carefully, with full awareness of what I was choosing not to say.

"There's nothing that affects the asset transfer," I said. "Focus on the clause."

I paused.

"His lawyers are very good," she said.

"So are you, that's why I'm paying you."

I ended the call and stood in the kitchen and let myself think clearly for sixty seconds, a habit I'd developed in the second year of the marriage, when I'd realized that panic was a luxury I couldn't afford and that sixty seconds of honest assessment was worth more than an hour of anxious circling.

Ethan knew about the clinic visit, he didn't know what it meant yet, if he did, his approach last night would have been less careful and more direct. Ethan Croft did not do subtle when he had the facts. He did subtle when he was still collecting them, which meant I had a window, small and closing, but still open.

He called me at noon, I almost didn't answer, then I remembered that not answering was also information, it told him the call mattered, that I needed time to compose myself before speaking to him and I picked up on the fourth ring, unhurried.

"Ethan."

"Have lunch with me."

I set down my pen. "We have lawyers for a reason."

"The lawyers can wait an hour." He paused.

"I'm not calling to negotiate, Mara. I'm calling to talk."

"We don't talk."

"We used to."

The words landed with a precision I suspected he intended. Early in the marriage, before the silences calcified into habit, we'd had long dinners where the conversation moved easily between his work and my opinions and something that felt, in the low light of expensive restaurants, almost like intimacy. I'd been the only one keeping score of when it stopped.

"Where?" I said.

"Seville by twelve-thirty."

"I'll be there at one," I said, and hung up first.

He was already seated when I arrived, which meant he'd been there early, and this mattered to him more than the phone call had let on. I crossed the room, sat down across from him, and picked up the menu I already knew by heart.

"You look tired," he said.

"I didn't sleep well."

"Neither did I."

I looked up. He was watching me steadily, both hands wrapped around a water glass, jacket on despite the warmth of the room. Armor, I recognized, we were both wearing armor.

"You didn't bring your lawyer," I said.

"I told you this isn't about the lawyers."

"Then what is it about?"

He was quiet for a moment. The restaurant murmured around us, cutlery, low conversation, the ordinary sounds of people eating lunch without their lives unraveling.

"The specialist," he said. "On the receipt, I need you to tell me what it was for."

"That's a private medical matter."

"We're still married."

"Technically." I folded my hands on the table.

"What exactly are you afraid of, Ethan?"

Something moved across his face. Fast, almost invisible, but I'd spent three years learning the small geography of his expressions.

"I'm not afraid," he said.

"You called a clinic at seven in the morning and you ou had your lawyer follow up eleven minutes later." I held his gaze. "That's not strategy, yhat's fear."

His jaw tightened.

"Tell me you're not sick," he said.

The words came out differently than everything else, ower, stripped of the boardroom precision.

I stared at him.

In three years, through cold silences, lonely holidays and the slow erosion of every small hope I'd arrived with, Ethan Croft had never once looked at me the way he was looking at me right now. Like the answer actually mattered, like I actually mattered.

Three years too late, said the part of me that had already packed its bags and bought a ticket to Lisbon. But the part of me that had loved him, the part I'd been quietly burying for months noticed, I filed it away and felt it like pressure behind the sternum.

"I'm not sick," I said.

The relief that crossed his face was immediate, unguarded and completely unlike him. Then his eyes sharpened. Because if I wasn't sick, then the clinic visit meant something else entirely. I watched him work through it in real time, the specialist, the secrecy, the contested clause, the urgency of my exit. I watched the moment he landed on the only remaining answer.

"Mara"

My phone buzzed on the table between us, It was Daniel. His name flashed on the screen before I could turn it over.

Ethan loo

ked at the name, then at me.

"Who is Daniel?" he asked.

And just like that, the afternoon had two fires instead of one.

I was far too lazy to get out of bed and shut the door, hoping she would eventually stop. She didn’t.The whistling continued relentlessly. With a frustrated sigh, I finally dragged myself out of bed and made my way downstairs, fully prepared to give her a piece of my mind.“Do you realize I can hear your whistles from—”No reply.I stopped mid-sentence.My brows furrowed as I stared at her, already irritated by her apparent decision to ignore me. Then I noticed it.Headphones.She had a pair of headphones over her ears, completely oblivious to my presence.“You’ve got to be kidding me.”I turned around, marched back upstairs, grabbed another pillow from my room, and returned

That’s new.”I forced a casual smile, resisting the urge to tug at the oversized fabric covering my stomach.“I just prefer this style now. It’s more comfortable.”His eyes narrowed slightly, but thankfully, he didn't press the issue.“Let’s begin with what we’re here for,” he said, immediately shifting the conversation.Relief washed over me.The last thing I needed was Richard becoming suspicious. Richard just called.I sent the message to Daniel, my fingers barely leaving the screen before his reply came through.“What’s his deal?”He responded so swiftly, it was almost as though he had been waiting for me to reach out.I continued pacing slowly across the room, my arms crossed tightly over my chest.“He says it’s better off speaking face to face.”I frowned.“That’s fishy don't you think?,” I sent another text A few seconds later, Daniel replied.“Really fishy. At this point, I don’t trust the Crofts anymore.”Neither did I.Something about Richard suddenly wanting to speak face to face made my stomach twist uneasily. He hasn't really been a fan.I paced a little faster, my mind running through every possible explanation. Then, against my better judgment, I let my curiosity get the best of me.“You should go hear what he has to say.”Daniel replied.I stared at the message,a strange feeling settling in the pit of my stomach. But whatever Richard wanted to discuss, I had a fee
