At Brian’s words, I felt my face flush, and glanced away.

Our eyes met again, the unspoken friction thickening the air. The sudden ringing of my phone shattered the moment like a bullet through a mirror.

"Taylor," I snapped into the receiver, my voice a whip crack.

It was Sergeant Lindsey, his voice a gruff thunderclap. "You two have a line on anything yet?"

I shook my head, even though he couldn't see it. "We're working on it, sir."

"Well, work faster. The higher uppers are all over my ass," he barked before hanging up.

The silence that followed was a reminder of our reality. We were FBI agents, not star-crossed lovers in a romance novel. We had a job to do.

The rain continued to pummel the windows of the bookstore, the sound in contrast to the quiet inside. The books around us whispered of love and loss, of the lives we were fighting to save.

"We should get back to the precinct," I said, my voice steady despite the quaking in my chest.
