Bad Luck

If that day was a long day, then the next two days felt like two weeks.

They were dragging seconds by seconds. However Sarah was holding it pretty bravely. It looked absurd to herself how lightly and well she was coping with this reality. Or maybe, the reality hadn’t hit her yet?

For Sarah, all these dramatic events in her life felt nothing but surreal. Maybe she had fallen asleep and was sucked in a very long nightmare. Or perhaps she had been summoned in a novel and she had turned into one of the characters. But there was no way that this was happening for real in her life. More bewildering was her own behaviour. Sarah was this kind of girl who would not even dare to raise her eyebrows to strangers, let alone to men! She had always been warned by her father to stay away from them and she had never really been in the company of any men except for her classmates. Yet, here strangely, she had challenged and even exploded at this man who was supposed to be her kidnapper, this monster who had murdered people right in front of her. This can’t be possibly right? This can’t be the real Sarah. The real one would have had a cardiac arrest right by the moment she had witnessed this traumatic scene!

However, it looked like a good thing to her. She would keep on believing she was inside of a novel and none of this is real. In this way, she would be able to survive here.

Sarah didn't get any chance to escape during these days but she had already planned it. During the day, she had explored the house, which was situated in the middle of a vast mass of trees. It looked like she was locked in the middle of a forest with no cars nor roads in sight. But, there was obviously a main road as her kidnapper went out very early in the morning. The house was like a palace, consisting dozens of rooms and it was very easy to avoid the devil.

They barely saw each other and if they did, it was by pure coincidence and miraculously Devlin treated Sarah with pure courtesy, nodding his head in salute and strode away.

Today, while strolling outside, Sarah noticed a hole in the fence at the back of the house. Following her mind, she had tried to pass through it, and to her great surprise, she had succeeded! Nevertheless she decided to escape at night, after dinner as by this time, the monster always enclosed himself in his study room.

Now, it was nine o'clock sharp and Sarah was all dressed and ready but nervously scared. She was wearing a black jeans and a red checked shirt, over which she has added a black hoodie and her hair tied in a pony tail. Yes, fitting clothes.

The day before, Devlin had brought them to her, God knows where he stole them but she didn't care anymore as long as she was not wearing his damn clothes. Securing the laces of her ankle boot once again, Sarah took a deep breath then quietly walked out of the room, phone in her pocket.

She quickly and easily made her way to the back of the house through the back door which was fortunately unlocked. At the back, she found no alarms, no cameras so she knew, she was safe. Once outside the house, she switched on her phone’s torch as there was no light, then she proceeded.

The night was horrifying. Darkness ruled over. Not even a single star was in sight! The sky was overmuch covered with big clouds, announcing a future downpour. The world was ghost quiet except for the occasional cold breeze swinging away the trees and leaves, causing a rough, disturbing sound. Her heart started to bounce vigorously inside her chest when she heard a sudden owl's cries. Her throat ran dry. This was thrilling like a drama, but she had to continue!

I have to overcome this fear! I am the protagonist of this thriller, she convinced herself. She would never accept to stay prisoner in this beast's house.

Miraculously, whenever she thought of him, Sarah’s anger rose and everything became possible. So, pushing aside unwanted thoughts, she made her way quickly to the hole in the fence.

She sighed. Thank God, she reached there. However few seconds before she was about to pass through it, it started raining.

She cursed, “God, my damn luck!”

But there was no backing out now. She had to continue and once again she thought about her freedom and persevered. Luckily Sarah found herself soon on a road but the problem was which way must she took? The right one or the left? Anyway, she sighed, whichever side she took, she would hopefully move further away from here. So, choosing the right side way, hoping it to be really the right one, Sarah set off.

Strangely, she felt a sense of peace, walking in the rain, knowing that her mission was accomplished although she didn't know what she would do once she found herself on a main road in this dark night and in this rain! Nevertheless she continued and soon later she started running in the rainfall, trying all her might to escape this nightmare.

Nonetheless one hour later, Sarah still found herself walking, a little slower this time. There were thunderstorms rumbling somewhere in the distance. The sky has turned an ominous color; heavy with cloud, an occasional flash of lightning splitting from far. It was raining wildly and she couldn't see a single thing let alone a main road! She was tired and drained. Her legs started to shake and they were aching badly. Stubbornly she continued a few meters then, suddenly her legs felt numb, she tripped over and fell down, right in the middle of the dark road.

''Damn it! How can I continue now,'' she sighed through ragged breath.

Sarah looked at her phone which was luckily waterproof. She gasped, it was nearly midnight! She’d been walking for nearly three hours now and no car in sight. Exhausted and panting, she started to lose hope when out of the dark, a car was heard, coming in her direction. Instantly hope lit up again and Sarah quickly sat upright. She let out a happy sigh this time.

The car came towards her with such a speed that she almost believed it would crush over her. Abruptly, it came to a halt, only few meters in front of her. Unfortunately, Sarah couldn't see the driver as she was blinded by both the abundant rain and the car headlights which were fully focused on her. She could only hear the door being opened and slammed hardly, followed by footsteps.

Narrowing her eyes, she tried to figure out the figure of the driver, who was getting closer and when she did, it was too late. The person was already next to her and when she raised her head...she felt like saying her death wish!

Her heart dropped in her chest and her breathing stopped.
