"Who's the Huntress?" Serena asked, her voice shaking as Lucian scooped her up again.

"Later," he growled, already moving through the forest at a pace that seemed impossible for someone carrying another person. "Right now, we run."

The distant howl came again, sending a chill down Serena's spine. Whatever—or whoever—made that sound wasn't a normal wolf. Even in her exhausted state, she could feel the wrongness in it.

Lucian sprinted through the moonlit forest, his breathing steady despite their speed. Serena clung to him with her good arm, watching the shadows between trees for signs of pursuit. Her broken arm throbbed with each jolting step, but fear pushed the pain to the background.

"She hunts Onyx wolves," Lucian finally said, his voice low as they paused in a small clearing. "Has for decades. No one knows why."

"But Onyx wolves are rare," Serena whispered. "Elder Thorne said none had been seen for generations."

Lucian's jaw tightened. "Your Elder Thorne is either a liar or a fool. Rare doesn't mean extinct."

Before Serena could ask more questions, Lucian tensed. His head snapped toward the east, nostrils flaring.

"Hold on," he commanded, then launched into a full sprint.

The forest blurred around them as Lucian pushed himself to impossible speeds. Tree branches whipped past, scratching Serena's skin. The howl behind them grew fainter, but Lucian didn't slow.

Dawn painted the sky pink by the time he finally stopped. Serena's muscles ached from holding tight to him for hours. She glanced around, seeing nothing but more trees and a small rocky outcropping.

"We're close to Nightfang territory," Lucian said, setting her down carefully against a boulder. "The Huntress won't follow us there."

Serena's legs trembled as she tried to stand on her own. "Why not?"

"Even she fears attacking a full pack." Lucian's golden eyes scanned the forest. "Especially mine."

Pride colored his words. For the first time, Serena realized how different Lucian was from her father—from all the Silver Ridge wolves. There was something wild and untamed about him that they had trained out of themselves generations ago.

"Rest," Lucian said, turning back to her. "We'll reach my pack by nightfall."

Serena wrapped his jacket tighter around herself. The morning air was chilly, and her damp hair still clung to her face.

"Why are you helping me?" she asked, though she already knew the answer.

"I told you—you have something I want."

"My power? Power I don't even know how to use?"

Lucian's lips curved in a half-smile. "You will learn. Under my guidance."

Serena stared at him, trying to understand this wolf who had saved her life while openly admitting he wanted to use her.

"And what do I get in return?" she challenged.

"You get to live." Lucian crouched before her, his face level with hers. "More than that—you get to become what you were meant to be, not what Silver Ridge tried to make you."

His words struck something deep inside her. All her life, Serena had followed Silver Ridge rules, trained to be the perfect Luna for Elias. She'd never questioned if that was what she truly wanted.

"Let me be clear," Lucian continued. "This is an alliance, not charity. I protect you; you help me defeat Silver Ridge. A fair exchange."

"Defeat? Or destroy?" Serena asked quietly.

Lucian's eyes hardened. "Whatever it takes."

A memory flashed in Serena's mind—Elias's face twisted in disgust as he backed away from her Onyx form. The pain of his rejection still burned fresh.

"Why do you hate them so much?" she asked.

Something dark passed over Lucian's face. "That's my business."

He stood abruptly, ending the conversation. "Can you walk? We need to keep moving."

Serena pushed herself up, grimacing as pain shot through her broken arm. Lucian watched her struggle without offering help—a test, she realized. He wanted to see her strength.

Gritting her teeth, Serena took a step forward, then another. Her legs wobbled but held.

"Good," Lucian nodded, approval flickering in his eyes. "You're stronger than you look."

They walked in silence for hours, Lucian slowing his pace to match hers. The forest gradually changed around them—the trees growing taller and closer together, the underbrush thicker. Animal trails replaced the wider paths of Silver Ridge territory.

By afternoon, Serena's strength was fading. She stumbled more often, her vision blurring with exhaustion. Without warning, Lucian stopped and turned to her.

"We cross the boundary here," he said. "Beyond that ridge lies Nightfang land."

Serena peered ahead, seeing little difference in the landscape. "How can you tell?"

"Smell," Lucian tapped his nose. "Every pack leaves its mark."

He stepped closer, studying her pale face and the way she cradled her broken arm. "You won't make it up that ridge."

Before she could protest, he'd swept her into his arms again. This time, Serena was too tired to argue.

As they crested the ridge, a new landscape spread before them. Unlike the neat, cultivated forests of Silver Ridge, this was wild country—ancient trees towering overhead, streams cutting jagged paths through rocky ground.

"This is your territory?" Serena asked, trying to hide her surprise.

"Disappointed?" Lucian's voice held amusement.

"It's different," she admitted. "Our lands are more..."

"Tame," Lucian finished for her. "Silver Ridge has forgotten what it means to be wolf. They live as humans who sometimes wear fur."

There was truth in his words. Silver Ridge prided itself on civilization—their pack headquarters was practically a small town, with proper houses and shops.

"Where does your pack live?" Serena asked, seeing no signs of habitation.

Lucian pointed toward a distant mountain. "There."

As they descended the ridge, Serena caught movement in the trees around them—shadows slipping between trunks, watchful eyes tracking their progress. Nightfang scouts.

"They're curious about you," Lucian said, noticing her unease. "They've never seen an Onyx wolf before."

"Will they accept me?" Serena asked quietly.

"They'll do as I command," Lucian replied, his tone leaving no room for doubt.

The shadows multiplied as they moved deeper into Nightfang territory. Occasionally, Serena caught glimpses of wolves—larger and wilder-looking than Silver Ridge wolves, with darker coats and bolder eyes.

By sunset, they reached the base of the mountain. A narrow path wound upward, disappearing into the rock face.

"My pack doesn't live in human dwellings," Lucian explained as he carried her up the path. "We have caves—natural and expanded—throughout the mountain."

The path opened suddenly into a wide clearing carved into the mountainside. Several massive cave entrances dotted the cliff face, connected by stone paths and wooden bridges. Campfires burned in fire pits, casting warm light across the gathering space. Dozens of wolves in both human and wolf form moved about the clearing.

All activity stopped as Lucian stepped into the clearing with Serena in his arms.

"Alpha returns!" someone called out.

Wolves gathered around them, their expressions curious and wary. Serena felt their stares like physical touches, judging and measuring her.

A tall woman with striking red hair stepped forward, her green eyes narrowing at the sight of Serena.

"What is this, Lucian?" she demanded. "You left to hunt Silver Ridge, not to bring home strays."

"Watch your tone, Lyra," Lucian warned, his voice cold. "This is no stray."

He set Serena down carefully but kept a supportive hand on her back. She stood as straight as she could, aware that showing weakness now would be dangerous.

"My pack," Lucian addressed the gathered wolves, his voice carrying easily across the clearing. "I bring you something thought lost to our kind—an Onyx wolf."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Some wolves stepped back, while others leaned forward in fascination.

"Show them," Lucian said quietly to Serena.

She hesitated. "I don't know if I can shift with my arm broken."

"Try," he insisted. "They need to see."

Closing her eyes, Serena focused on the wolf inside her—that strange, dark power that had changed everything. The shift came easier this time, washing over her in a wave of tingling energy. Bones reset, muscles reformed, her broken arm healing partially as it transformed into a front leg.

When she opened her eyes, she stood on four paws, her midnight-black fur gleaming in the firelight. Gasps rose from the gathered wolves.

"The legends are true," someone whispered.

"A curse," another voice countered.

Lucian placed a hand on her head, silencing the murmurs. "Not a curse," he declared. "A weapon. One that will finally give us victory over Silver Ridge."

Serena looked up at him, surprised by the conviction in his voice. Did he truly believe that, or was it just what his pack needed to hear?

"The Onyx wolf will stay with us," Lucian continued. "She will learn our ways. And when the time comes, she will help us claim what is rightfully ours."

The red-haired woman—Lyra—stepped forward again. "And when she turns that power against us? What then, Alpha?"

Lucian's hand tightened slightly in Serena's fur. "She won't."

His confidence should have been reassuring, but something in his tone sent a shiver through Serena. What if she couldn't control this power? What if she did become the monster everyone feared?

"Prepare quarters for our guest," Lucian ordered. "And send Mira to tend her injuries."

As the pack dispersed to follow his commands, Lucian crouched beside Serena's wolf form.

"Welcome to Nightfang, little wolf," he said softly. "Your new home. Your sanctuary."

His amber eyes gleamed in the firelight as he added, "And your prison, should you betray me."

From the shadows at the edge of the clearing, Serena felt eyes watching her—one pair in particular. She turned her head slightly, catching a glimpse of a wolf with silver-gray fur observing from a distance, its expression unreadable.

A wolf that looked exactly like Elias Storm.

  • Torn Between Alphas   Chapter 76: The Shadow Approaches

The trip north seemed less dramatic than they had expected. Not quiet — birds in trees, wind in grass, the soft crush of boots over dry earth. But it was the kind of quiet that raised the hair on your arms. “There was something in that that for me was like, somebody played a song and forgot the melody. As though the world held its breath.Lucian felt it first. His hand rested on the hilt of his old sword, but there was no enemy in front of him. “`There’s something bad coming from the land,’” he was muttering."Yes," agreed Serakha, and gazed out to the horizon. “It feels... pulled back. As though the world is holding its breath for something.”They passed crumbling fences, abandoned wells, houses with open doors but not a footprint near. The villages were empty. Not ravaged — abandoned. No signs of struggle. No sign of why.Just gone.By the third day

A silver fog filtered the morning light and rounded the edges of the awakening world. Gentle puffs escaped from chimneys into the sky and village life resumed. There was a rustle of footfalls on the trodden path outside the orchard. Somehow a dog barked twice and stopped, satisfied.Serakha was pacing up and down between the rows of the orchard. Her wrap was wet at the hem with dew, and the tips of her fingers floated a little above the young leaves, as if she were afraid to touch them. The trees were small, not much higher than our shoulders, but they were straight and firm. Even the wind appeared to still for them, as if to listen. She let out a breath and dropped into a crouch, her fingers finding purchase in the earth. There was a pulse under her skin, not pain, not quite fear. And more like a heartbeat whose number she had simply forgotten.Dreams had been snaring around her like thorns, for three nights

The sound of hammers lightly echoed through the morning air. Not hard, but rhythmic, like a heartbeat getting back up to strength. The village was waking up earlier now — no longer terrified of what might be lurking in the dark, but thrilled for what could be created in the light. Lucian stood at the edge of a freshly dug trench, sleeves rolled up, palms thick with calluses. He observed a cluster of teenagers pile up rocks to build a new irrigation line, their laughter spilling amid the gentle rattle of stone. He didn’t have to yell, didn’t have to oversee; they knew what they were supposed to do, and they knew he believed they would do it.Serakha came up quietly, her steps soft on the soil. Today, she’d worn a pale green wrap of simple, light weave, made by one of the elder women, fastened about her waist with a belt of braided grass. A satchel hung at her hip, stuffed with herbs, scrolls and half-finished r

The morning light poured like honey across the meadow, warming Lucian’s skin before his eyes had even unsealed. Somewhere close by, birds chirped, flitting between the branches of the trees Kael had disappeared into last night. What had been a fire last night was now only a circle of black ash and a few glowing pieces of coal.Serakha was still curled next to him, her breath warm and even. He turned his head a little, trying not to wake her. Her face was peaceful now, not just still — healed. No more fire behind her eyes. No more burdening her. Just… her.Lucian let himself smile. A moment later, her eyelids fluttered open.“Morning,” he said softly. She blinked and smiled, slow and warm. “Still here.”“Still real,” he said, tapping her forehead lightly with his. She raised her blue and white stripped pajamas covered arms up toward the sky. “I dreamed I was in water,” she murmured. “A dark lake with moonlight on it. • Torn Between Alphas   Chapter 72: When the Forest Weeps

The forest wept. The air hung heavy with sorrow, the leaves trembling as if the trees themselves knew what had been lost. Ashes drifted like falling snow across the clearing where the final spirit node had stood—its corruption burned clean by Solene’s sacrifice.Aria stood frozen in the stillness, her heart pounding like a war drum muffled beneath grief. The firelight from Solene’s ritual still crackled faintly in the underbrush, casting elongated shadows that danced like mourners. Elena knelt beside the scorched roots, her hands clenched over her chest as if trying to hold herself together.“She’s gone,” Elena whispered. “She’s really gone.”Aria couldn’t speak. Her throat was a knot of pain. Her mind still echoed with the sound of Solene’s voice—her final incantation, her final promise.“Protect the realm… even from what you cannot yet see…”Aria had fought wars. She had survived Mara. She had stood before the moon goddess herself. But she had never felt as helpless as she did now,

  • Torn Between Alphas   CHAPTER 71: INTO THE MIND OF FIRE

The light below them grew to engulf all that was. It wasn't warm. It wasn't cold. It just was. Weightless. Soundless. Like a fall, only not moving. Then there was a snap, like a string fraying. And they landed. It was soft beneath their feet — not dirt — not stone. Something in between. It was like treading on ash and satin; The sky overhead was red, streaked with veins of gold, pulsing languorously as though it were a living heart. There was no sun. No moon. Just that infinite sky on fire. Lucian looked around, sword half-drawn. “Where are we?”Kael peered into the distance with narrowed eyes. “It’s the inside of a mountain … but too big.”Serakha stood up slowly, dusting her arms. “We’re in the mind of it now. The Sleeping One. This is not a place. It’s… memory. Feeling.”Lucian kicked a pebble. It bounced, then became airborne,&e
