The Shifting Tide

The air was thick with tension as the trio moved down the narrow hallway, their footsteps quick but measured. Serena could feel the weight of their urgency pressing against her chest. Every corner they passed seemed to narrow, every shadow lurking just a little longer than it should. They didn’t speak as they moved; words seemed unnecessary. They all knew what was coming.

Serena’s mind, still wrapped in the knowledge of the map and the cult, struggled to keep pace with the emotions stirring within her. The Onyx wolf, the power that coursed through her veins, was growing stronger with every passing minute. It was almost like a hunger, a low growl in the back of her mind that she couldn’t quiet. She’d always fought it, always tried to keep it contained, but now... now it felt like it was awakening, stretching, testing the boundaries of its cage.

Her fingers brushed against the cool stone walls as she walked, the rough texture grounding her, but it did little to calm the chaos inside her. What if she couldn’t control it? What if the Onyx wolf was right, and she was meant to embrace the darkness it promised? The thought made her stomach twist.

"Focus, Serena," Lucian’s voice cut through her spiraling thoughts. He was walking slightly ahead, his brow furrowed in concentration. "We need to get out of here. Stay with us."

Elias was close behind, his pace steady but his expression unreadable. He hadn’t said much since their discovery in the library, but Serena could feel his presence, solid and unwavering. It was the one thing that kept her grounded in the storm of doubt swirling inside her.

They reached the stairs that led up to the courtyard. The dim light from the torches flickered against the stone walls, casting long shadows that seemed to stretch toward them. Lucian stopped abruptly at the top, motioning for the others to stay close.

“Hold on,” he whispered, his voice low but sharp. “They’re close.”

Serena’s heart leapt in her chest. She strained her ears, listening to the distant echoes of footsteps. They were getting closer, the sound unmistakable. She could feel it now—them—the stranger, Isolde, and Mira. The cult. They were here, moving through the same halls she had just traversed. They were hunting her.

Her pulse quickened, and without thinking, her fingers clenched into fists. The Onyx wolf stirred again, urging her to let it loose, to embrace the power it offered. But Serena knew, deep down, that giving in to it now would only make things worse. She had to resist. She had to stay in control.

“We need a plan,” Lucian said quietly, his voice tense. “If we can get to the stables, we can escape. But we have to move fast.”

Elias nodded, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. “We don’t have much time. They’ll be here soon.”

The sound of footsteps grew louder. Serena’s chest tightened. She could feel the Onyx wolf beneath her skin, its presence stronger than ever. The hunger inside her was growing, urging her to strike, to fight, to tear down everything in her path. But she couldn’t let it take control—not now.

Lucian gave her a glance, his eyes searching hers. “Stay with me, Serena. You’re stronger than this.”

She wanted to believe him. She did. But the pull of the wolf was too great, and she could feel herself slipping.

“I’m trying,” she whispered, her voice shaky. “But I don’t know if I can hold it back much longer.”

“We don’t have a choice,” Elias said, his voice hard. “The longer we wait, the worse it gets. We have to move.”

Without another word, they began to move again, this time with more urgency. They rounded a corner, and Serena’s heart skipped a beat as she saw them.

Isolde stood at the far end of the hall, flanked by the stranger and Mira. The three of them were waiting, as if they had known all along where they would be. Their eyes locked with Serena’s, and for a brief moment, everything felt like it slowed down.

“You’re here,” the stranger said, his voice cold and smooth, like ice running through her veins.

Serena’s breath caught in her throat, but she didn’t step back. She couldn’t. Not now.

Lucian stepped forward, positioning himself between Serena and the others. “Get out of our way, Zane,” he growled. “We’re not playing your game.”

Zane—the stranger—smiled, a thin, mocking smile. “I’m afraid you’re already part of the game. You just don’t know it yet.”

Serena could feel the weight of his words. They were meant to unsettle her, to make her doubt herself. She had to resist. She couldn’t let him win.

“We’re leaving,” Elias said, his voice sharp, but there was a flicker of uncertainty in his eyes. He wasn’t sure if they could make it out of here alive.

But Zane wasn’t done. “You think you can just walk away?” he asked, his tone darkening. “You are the key, Serena. You don’t get to walk away from this. Not when I’ve come so far.”

Serena took a step forward, her heart pounding in her chest. The Onyx wolf surged inside her, its power flaring, but she fought to keep it at bay. She wasn’t ready to give in, not yet. “I won’t let you control me.”

“You already are,” Zane said, his eyes cold. “You just don’t realize it.”

Without warning, he raised his hand, and the air seemed to grow heavy. Serena felt a sharp, painful tug on her chest as if invisible chains were trying to pull her toward him. She stumbled, her legs shaking as she fought the force pulling at her.

Lucian reacted instantly, drawing his sword and stepping between her and Zane. “Enough!” he shouted, swinging his blade toward Zane. “This ends now.”

But Zane only laughed, the sound echoing through the hall. “You can’t stop me,” he said, his voice a taunting whisper. “No one can.”

Serena’s breath quickened. The Onyx wolf inside her roared in response, its fury matching the chaos of the moment. She could feel its power rising, its call to action impossible to ignore.

She closed her eyes, breathing deeply, trying to center herself. Lucian’s voice was steady in her ear, but the Onyx wolf was becoming too loud, too insistent.

You’re not just the key, Serena. You’re more than that. You are the storm.

Her heart hammered in her chest as she made a choice. This wasn’t just about resisting the Onyx wolf. It was about embracing it, using it to fight back, to protect herself and the ones she loved.

With a sudden, forceful breath, Serena reached deep inside herself and released the power that had been building inside her. The Onyx wolf surged to the surface, a dark force that wrapped itself around her like a cloak.

And in that moment, Serena understood. She wasn’t the key to their plans.

She was the storm that would tear it all down.

  • Torn Between Alphas   Chapter 49: The First Flame

The woods past the Hollow were silent — too silent. No birds. No wind. Just the crunch of their booted feet on dew-drenched leaves. Even that seemed too loud, as if sound had weight now. The way the Hollow still held on to their skin.Serena spearheaded the procession, boots squelching soppily down the trail. Lucian walked next to her again, and Elias lingered a few steps back, one hand pressed to a shallow weapon wound on his arm. The sun struggled between the trees, soft gold in the leaves, but she didn’t feel warm. Not yet.It was as though everywhere they went, the Hollow dragged a shadow behind them.“We need to find shelter,” Lucian said quietly. He had sounded authoritative next to me, but now he was anxious.“There’s an outpost,” Elias said, scanning the woods. “Old one. Once a watch tower during the Border Wars ‘bout two miles away.&r

  • Torn Between Alphas   Chapter 48: The Hollow Heart

The sky above alley swam with streaks of red, but in the wind something was amiss. It wasn’t a peaceful sunrise. It was the sort of morning which suggested ancient things stirring, of footfalls that didn’t belong on this earth. She hadn’t seen the change at first, she’d felt it. The Onyx wolf within her stirred, stretched as if waking from a deep sleep. But this time, it didn’t try to seize control. It simply listened. Waited. They were headed to a place most famous in whispers — the Hollow. Because it was a name used in stories to scare children, but the further they traveled within it, the more Serena could see this entire place was more than some legend. It was a warning that had gone unheeded for a long time.Lucian walked beside her, sword across his back, eyes attentive, lips taut. He had not talked much since the last fight, but his presence was solid. Strong. An in silence pr

  • Torn Between Alphas   The Wolf’s Tides

The wind wailing through the cracks of the mountains, the scent of pine fused with something far older, something far more evil. The air hung tight with tension, and the earth waited. Serena knew the Onyx wolf lay awake in her, her senses in hyperdrive as she stood at the cliff's edge and scanned the horizon. It was no longer just something in the fabric of her life — it was — it had become part and parcel of the very being, a power that she could neither deny nor completely master.Lucian, at her side, was quiet, gazing straight ahead, his left hand resting on the hilt of his sword. They had come a long way together exploring the Ruins. It was that sort of thing that was never said, that gave them a source of strength neither had expected but both had grown to depend on.“We can’t run anymore,” Serena said, in a voice barely above a whisper.Lucian was staring back, his expression inscrutable.

  • Torn Between Alphas   Chapter 46: The Edge of Flame

Through the early mist and bars of thread-light that fell between rotting trees, the mountain pass moved ahead. It was quiet here, not peaceful though. The silence had been the sort that fell before something began — or returned. They had marched for hours, boots crunching on dirt and frost, a golden scent of pine and ash in the air. They climbed, down their bent, back toward land that turned in crooked slope, the trees thinning, the shadow splaying out more freely.Serena walked beside Lucian. Neither of them had said all that much since they got the two of them out of those ruins, but their silence wasn’t one of like uncomfortable silences. It had weight. A build of tension, slow like a bow drawn, not released. He remained almost side by side with her, close enough to brush her arm a time or two. Each time, she had felt it — something charged. Not the wolf, not fear, but a pull. Like something in

  • Torn Between Alphas   The Quiet Before

The wind sighed over the battlefield. Where moments before had been fire and screams, now silence. And trees in the distance sighed, their leaves murmuring. Serena stood over the wreck breathing heavily as she tried to catch her breath. Blood covered her blade and caked over her hands and parts of her face. But her grip was steady. She didn’t move at first. Couldn’t. Her legs were leaden; her arms were leaden. It felt like something eternal, she thought, beginning to grow inside her—not the wolf, exactly, but something icier. A part of her that’d wait in a line. To a place she could never return to.The first to her side was Lucian. He remained silent at first. Just looked at her, the point of his sword drooping, his eyes filled with what you might almost call respect—and compassion.“Are you alright?” he said after a beat, in a low, gentle voice."So I don’t k

  • Torn Between Alphas   An End to Shadows

A shriek—guttural, wild, and metallic on bone—ricocheted through the trees. The Ruins erupted out, savage purpose trailing behind them on their grotesque mangled bodies as they leapt toward the party, talons swirling. Serena’s heart was pounding so loud in her ears, but she stood rooted to the ground while Kaelen and the rest unleashed everything they had against them. The effects were immediate and brutal; the sulfur sweetness of blood and soil pervaded the air.Something weighed war in her like the battle-evolved shudders of her Onyx wolf. The electricity in her skin, begging for release. She could sense its rage, its desire to obliterate. But she had never let it all go wild, not wild enough, anyway, to lose control of what she was doing and the shadier territory of her own person. Not now. “This was not the time for that.”Kaelen felt his chest give, leaving his lungs losing air in his breath. Th
