The sun hung on the edge of the world, casting over it a soothing amber glow that filtered in past the towering great pines rimming the gargantuan grounds of the Emerald Pack.

Soft thrum of water splashing and soft thud of wet tunic rubbing my hands accompanied me as I vigorously scrubbed these tunics with the stone basin. Knuckles sore, fingers numb from exposure to cold water. But I never slack. Not when I know that Kaidën will notice the slightest wrinkle or blemish.

Wind whipped silver strands around my face, some clinging to my wet forehead as I attempted to flick them away with the back of my wrist. The pungent scent of pines and damp linen lingered in the air heavy. I steeled myself, focused on the task-until a gentle tap on the shoulder jolted me.

"Akira?"

Familiar voice, warm.

I turned around, letting out a breath that I hadn't even noticed I'd been holding. "Lyrien."

He was behind me, sunlight glinting in his bronze hair and his amber eyes worried look on his face. His soft smile was like a balm to my battered soul as he looked at my flushed face and trembling hands.

"You haven't eaten, have you?" he asked softly.

I rubbed my hands dry vigorously on my apron as warmth swept over my cheeks and my neck. "I will; after I'm done with Kaidens' clothes."

His jaw clenched at my answer, the nonchalance of him flashing with momentary anger. "Akira, Kaiden's not even here. He left for the borderlands-he won't be back in another seven days."

Seven days.

Just knowing he was out there comforted me a little; but the old habit of wariness weighed heavily. "Still. this has to be done before he gets back. Don't worry, it's just a little I should have had done in an hour. I don't want to get yelled at or starved again." I grumbled, allowing my sorrows and worrying to flow off my tongue.

"He starves you?" Lyrein snarled with a bit of rage in his voice.

Realizing that I had said too much, I pressed my eyes shut and pursed my lips.

"Leave the clothes, and all your woes," Lyrien spoke sternly. But before I could speak another word, he had wrapped his hand around mine-warm and firm-and pulled me back from the washing basin.

My heart pounded quickly, my flesh prickling where his fingers were wrapped around my own. "Lyrien, I-"

"No," he cut in, his smile uncoiling. "You should eat. Come along."

He took me through the stone corridors to the large dining hall, where sunlight filtered through the imposing windows, spreading golden light upon the long wooden tables. He seated me and called over a maid.

"Take her something to eat. Now," he ordered, then focused on me again.

I shifted uncomfortably under his gaze. "I don't want to be a bother-"

"You're not." His voice fell at that. "You've been through hell, Akira. And you're still here; still fighting. That's strength."

His words tightened my throat. No one had ever told me I was strong before-with some bitterness thrown in.

A fine assortment of hot bread, stew, and fruit was placed before the maids, before me specifically. It hit me hard, and before my reason could even fight back, I dived in, pride overwhelming hunger.

Lyrien smiled softly. "Slow down. It isn't going anywhere."

I laughed-it was soft, broken, a sound I barely recognized as my own.

Lyrien sat with me during meals, his words dropping away into silence about the memories of Emerald pack before Kaiden was crowned. He teased me and made me blush with his flirty looks, but I could not help but sense that warmth settle in my chest.

"Akira," he murmured after a pause, his eyes hard now. "If you ever need-"

But before he could finish the sentence, an almost predictable wave hit with a storm of dizziness, fierce and unexpected. A ring as my fork dropped between plate and table, and my eyes began to blur.

"Lyrien." I gasped, grasping at my stomach as the contents of my belly twisted in nausea.

His chair groaned loudly across the stone floor as he sprang to his feet. "You're pale-Akira, what is it?"

"I-I don't know," I gasped, my head reeling.

No hesitation, Lyrien swept me into his arms, his power effortless. "Hold on."

The world blurred past me as he walked along the corridors as he took me to the royal clinic.

"Doctor!" Lyrien growled at the healers as we rushed in.

But before any of them could even lay hands on me, all hell erupted outside, the corridors echoing with screams.

The doors to the royal clinic were thrown open, so the walls shook.

They burst in with shrieks and commotions, of guards, an all-too-familiar face.

Kaiden.

His armor was covered with blood, an arrow deep in his chest, black veins crawling around the wound-poisoned. His head was thrown back, death-white.

Gasp after gasp filled the room as guards placed him on the nearest cot, rushing to his side.

Every last remnant of Lyrien's easygoing demeanor was gone. Lost was the soft-spoken man who'd held me a second ago. Alpha power radiated from him, the air chill at his aura, commanding and enraged.

"What the hell just happened?" he snarled, his voice low and angry.

Kaiden's beta stepped forward, a grizzled wolf with a scar running down his cheek, blood smeared on his tunic. "We'd won the war. The enemy had retreated. We were. celebrating." His jaw clenched, and the shame burned across his face. "Then an arrow just came out of nowhere. Right into the King's chest."

"Who fired it?" Lyrien's voice was icy.

The beta faltered. "One of ours."

Silence broke into the room, heavy and stifling.

"One of our guards?" echoed Lyrien, aura clouding with rage.

The beta nodded. "Kaiden sent him before the poison could. Stole him stone dead. but not before the arrow hit."

Betrayal.

It's there in the air, gagging and smothering.

I sat frozen, dizziness forgotten, gazing at Kaiden's unmoving form. Even after everything he'd done to me, a cold hard knot of fear constricted my stomach.

Because if Kaiden died…

Chapter 38 – The Thing That Shouldn’t Wake The fissure widened, glowing veins of light spreading across the chamber floor. The whispers grew louder, overlapping until they pressed against Akira’s skull like knives. She gripped her temples and staggered. “Kaidën…” Her voice trembled. “It’s inside my head.” “I know,” he said through clenched teeth, pulling her behind him. “I can hear it too. It’s like it’s—chewing at my thoughts.” Her father lifted his hand, shadows twisting like frantic serpents around his arm. But this time, they weren’t under his control—they recoiled, trembling, as if terrified of what was rising. “No,” he hissed. “Not again.” The light blazed and then shattered into fragments. From the chasm below, a figure appeared—initially just a warped silhouette. Its body flickered between flesh and shadow, its face shifting and blurred, as if it couldn’t decide what it was meant to be. Dozens of eyes opened across its form, blinking in a horrifying, synchronized manner.

  • Torn Between Two Moons   When the Walls Break (Chapter 37)

The air shattered like thunder as Kaidën’s sword collided with the shadowy spear. The impact shook the chamber, sending shockwaves rippling across the floor. Dust and bits of stone cascaded down, stinging Akira’s skin. Her father’s power was suffocating, every blow infused with ages of cruelty and cleverness. Kaidën pushed back, fueled by sheer grit, but every clash forced him backward, his feet dragging against the stone as if the ground was resisting him. Akira's breath hitched. Inside her, she felt the hunger still clawing away, begging for release, whispering that just one surge of her power could end this battle in seconds. Just one choice, one act of surrender—that’s all it would take. “Don’t even think about it,” Kaidën shouted, catching her eye as he parried another strike. His voice strained, but his gaze was fierce. “If you give in, he wins. Stay with me!” Her father sneered. “He’ll die for you, Akira. And when he does, it’ll shatter you, leaving only me to pick up the

The room shook as shadows grew thicker, engulfing the air around them. The ceiling creaked under the strain, cracks spreading like veins through the stone above. Akira’s heart raced in her ears, matching the turmoil brewing inside her chest. Her father stood firm amid the chaos, arms wide open as if inviting the destruction. “Can you feel it?” he yelled above the din. “The hunger, the power? That’s not your enemy, Akira. That’s who you are.” “No,” she spat, pressing her palms to her temples. The whispers were starting to eat away at her sanity, voices weaving through her mind with promises she was too scared to embrace. Take him. End him. End them all. We’ll give you strength. Kaidën cut through another wave of shadows, the blade of his sword glowing faintly with the runes carved into its steel. He was wounded, breathing hard, but his voice sliced through the chaos. “Akira! Focus on me. Don’t let him get inside your head.” She felt her knees weaken under the weight pulling at h

  • Torn Between Two Moons   The Price of Power (chapter 35)

The quiet after the storm felt heavier than the battlefield’s echoes. Dust hung in the air, catching the dim light like broken stars. Akira stood at the center of it all, breathing shallowly, her veins still stinging from the shadows that had merged with her. Kaidën approached her slowly, almost like he was handling a wounded animal. His sword hung low, but his gaze stayed locked on her. “Akira… please, talk to me. Just tell me you’re still with us.” She forced herself to look him in the eye. For a moment, she was unsure of her own answer. The shadows still whispered at the edges of her mind, tempting her with power and vengeance. But she tightened her fists until her nails dug into her skin, anchoring herself with the sharp pain. “I’m here,” she whispered, though she wasn’t quite sure who she was trying to convince—him, or herself. A flash of relief crossed Kaidën’s face, but the caution didn’t fade. He reached for her hand, and she let him take it, even though her skin felt icy

  • Torn Between Two Moons   The Fracture (chapter 34)

Akira felt the chamber tremble as she clenched her fist. The shadows around her transformed—no longer just her father’s or an enemy of Kaidën, but hers now. They danced around her like a tempest, shifting between flames and smoke, light and darkness. Her father’s eyes sparkled with triumph. "Yes! That's it! My blood. My heir."Akira's breath came in short gasps, her chest tightening from the intensity. The power wasn’t a whisper—it roared in her ears, surged through her veins, a thousand voices urging her to unleash chaos, to dominate. She stumbled, clutching her head as fragments of visions crashed into her consciousness—cities crumbling, seas boiling, shadows creeping over the world like an endless night."Akira!" Kaidën's voice cut through the storm. He fought his way through, blade raised, his eyes locking onto hers with urgency. "You’ve got to let go—it’s feeding on you!"But his words felt distant. The shadows throbbed, responding only to her. With a flick of her wrist, the grou

The shadows don’t destroy—they obey. They belong to us.”Kaidën lunged forward, his blade flashing in a blur of precise and ruthless movements, but every strike was met with the writhing coils of light that her father wielded like an extension of himself.“You’re wasting your strength,” her father said calmly, flicking his wrist. The shadows surged, slamming Kaidën against the wall with a bone-crushing force. He grunted but stayed on his feet.“Stop hurting him!” Akira yelled, rushing forward. As her voice pierced the air, the shadows shifted—pausing and faltering, almost as if they recognized her.
