*Cathwulf*

I am awoken by birds singing outside my window. After stretching my slender, yet curvy body, I spring out of bed, feeling so happy and elated as a young girl possibly can.

Finally the day I have been waiting for all of my life is here, my eighteenth birthday and soon I will turn into a wolf for the first time and hopefully meet my true mate.. yes, I, Cathwulf Pureheart, is a werewolf, and I can’t wait for my first change and what it will bring.

Looking In the mirror I smile at myself. I know I am a pretty girl, even though I am nothing special, except for my eyes, they seem to change colour with the light and what I wear. I like my eyes a lot.

First a quick shower, I can’t risk going to work smelling badly. Then I dry myself off and pull out the scrunchie holding my hair on top of my head.

Standing in front of the mirror I absentmindedly run a brush through my long auburn hair and pull it into a ponytail. Cute... but simple... perfect.

I carefully pull on clean cotton underwear and my black stockings, before I put on my favorite plaid skirt, it reaches just above my knees. I finish my look with a pretty white blouse. I want to look pretty for my birthday and for work.

A bit of mascara and a touch of blush is all I need. I am lucky to be blessed with perfect porcelain skin, and pink full lips, so I don’t feel I need anymore to look my best. And to me too much makeup is never pretty, natural is the way to go.

I skip down the stairs, whistling happily. This day is already like the best day ever and I can’t wait to see what more it will bring, only good things I am sure.

I smile as I find my mess of a family in the kitchen, all chatting away happily. Well they aren’t my real family of course. I was an orphan and Lyca Pureheart adopted me when I was found as a baby. We are all orphans or babies left by their parents, but we are still a family.

Luca is the one adopting all the orphaned wolf cubs in this pack, The silver lake pack, as she has no mate and no children of her own.

“Morning Cat.. congratulations my dear”. Lyca comes over to kiss my cheeks. She has always been a great and very loving mother to all of us.

From the other 6 kids in the kitchen there are yells of congratulations and happy birthday. Usually we all get along very well.

My mother is back at the stove. “How does it feel to finally be an adult ?”

“Oh so exciting and amazing mom”. I say, smiling happily. Turning eighteen is the biggest day in any young wolf's life.

I look at Luca, happy that she has said ICan stay in her house until I find my mate or decide to move out.

Then I look around the table at my siblings. I have one older brother Alaric, he is nineteen, but still living at home as he is studying and hasn't found a mate yet. Then I have three younger brothers Bardou, who is sixteen, Honi is nine and Cuan who is just two and the youngest. I also have two sisters, Chinua who is a typical thirteen year old and Due who is five and so sweet. Our house is always brimming with life.

I slump down on my usual chair and grab a plate, loading it with mostly sausages and bacon. Lately as my change is getting closer I feel myself craving more and more meat. But that is just natural for a wolf of course, my mom keeps reassuring me.

“I thought it better that you get your presents tonight after work, when you have more time to open one at a time and appreciate them”. Lyca says from the stowe, where she is making even more food for her hungry litter of pups.

“Totally mom... I definitely prefer that”. I want to really enjoy opening my presents. I always loved getting presents and I hope I will get something good.

Bardou looks up from his food. “Do you really have to work on your eighteenth birthday sis ? Couldn’t he have given you the day off ? It’s a special day after all”.

“Mr Evill needs me… we are doing inventory these days and everyone has to be there”. I say, wolfing down my last piece of bacon.

I am proud that my boss needs me, that I do something that helps others.

“Oh Thomas Evill, he is just so… hot”. Chinua breathes out, almost like a moan.

I blush slightly, looking at my plate, thinking of my boss, the billionaire CEO of the company. “I guess he is a handsome looking man”.

Lyca clears her throat. “Chinua ! You are way too young to be thinking about such things, you have 5 years till your first change and your chance of finding your mate… and it won’t be a human man... that’s for sure”.

Lyca wants the best for all of us. Also when it comes to mates. I know she hopes I will be mated to a high level fighter or even a beta.

“If she is lucky”. Alaric sighs and fills his plate again... he is rather depressed about not having found a mate, not everyone does.

Lyca ruffles his hair. “Don’t worry so much kid.. it has only been a year.  I am sure she will show up... just give it time”.

We all keep telling him she will come… maybe she will have her first change this year or next.

“You will find her and she will adore you”. I tell him, smiling at him. He deserves to find his mate and get his own family… he is the best big brother ever.

“Thank you”. He says with a warm smile. “It’s gonna be interesting to see if your mate is in our pack... or you will need to search for him”.

I nod feeling rather curious too.. I mean there are a couple of cute guys in the pack I wouldn’t mind being mates with. No matter who he is I know I will adore him, that is kinda how it works.

Looking up I see the clock. “Oh I better get out the door, or I’ll be late for work... see you all later”.

  • Torn between the Alpha and the CEO   33: Epilogue

*Cathwulf*Smoke follows us into the dawn.By the time we clear the annex, the sky is turning that thin gray-blue that makes every bad night look briefly survivable. Sprinklers still spit from broken windows. Fire crews, human and wolf both, swarm the loading yard under Bram's barking direction. Mara sits on the back of an ambulance in a blanket and curses anybody who tries to call her brave. Rook has found a cigarette from nowhere and is smoking with the vicious concentration of a man who has earned every drag.Bodies are covered. Names are being written down. That matters. No euphemisms. No guest, no inventory, no regrettable loss. Just names, as many as we can recover from files, cages, manifests, memory. Nessa has a laptop balanced on the hood of a truck, wet curls escaping everywhere, typing like vengeance has wrists.I stand beside her in Therian's jacket and read over her shoulder as she builds the list.Mika.Jonel.Pale twins, Adra and Elsi.Three rogues still unknown.A wol

  • Torn between the Alpha and the CEO   32: The coat room burns

*Cathwulf*The annex looks uglier on the way back in.Maybe that is because I know what is inside now. Maybe it is because I am wearing Therian's jacket over bare skin and smelling wolves, blood, diesel, and freezer burn all at once. Maybe it is because once a place has shown you the cages, the polished parts stop pretending. The freed wolves come with us.Not all of them. Mara can barely stand, and Bram forces two fighters to get the worst injured out to the trucks with enough authority to make them obey without wasting breath. But the brindled male from the overturned convoy shifts half back to human, huge and scarred and shivering, and says, "Vault's below the cryo floor. He keeps the premium stock there."Premium stock.I put my hand on the concrete wall for one second because otherwise I might scream and never stop.Therian hears the hitch in my breathing. "Cathwulf.""I'm fine," I say automatically. He gives me one look. "No, you're not."The honesty of that almost steadies me.

  • Torn between the Alpha and the CEO   31: Opal in the bloodlight

*Cathwulf* The tranq rifle kicks harder than I expect. My shot blows out the rear tire of the nearest truck instead of anything elegant. Rubber bursts with a sound like a gunshot in a cathedral. The whole refrigerated unit fishtails across wet concrete, clips a stack of plastic pallets, and slams sideways into a loading post."That counts," I shout.Therian is already moving. He sprints beside me through the floodlit yard, boots hammering the pavement, all broad fury and ruthless focus. The other two trucks keep going, white boxes on wheels carrying breathing bodies toward the south gate. Sirens scream over us. Red alarms flash against the annex walls and turn the night into a cheap apocalypse.A guard bursts out from behind a forklift with a shock baton raised.I fire on instinct. The dart catches him in the shoulder. He gets one offended look on his face, then folds like expensive laundry."Useful," I mutter, and keep running. The wrecked truck rocks on its ruined axle. Something

  • Torn between the Alpha and the CEO   30: Pack on the hook

*Cathwulf*The chapel fills with the sound of alarms, broken glass, and men discovering they are no longer the only predators in the room.Bram disappears through the inner door with two wolves at his back. I hear snarling, metal slamming, somebody shouting for keys. Therian stays between me and Torn Eviil, broad as a barricade, while the gas thins in ragged white ribbons near the rafters.Eviil steps away from the altar, one hand smoothing the front of his suit as if we have merely interrupted dessert. "I had hoped you would be more singular than this, Cathwulf."I cough hard enough to taste sweetness and bile. "You skinned Mara for ambiance. Forgive me for skipping etiquette."His smile flickers. "Not yet, actually. That was the point."That lands like a blade.Therian lunges.Eviil jerks backward with a speed that would be comical if it were not so well rehearsed, knocking over a display case as he moves. Glass explodes across the stone floor. He slaps his palm against a brass pane

  • Torn between the Alpha and the CEO   29: Furriers chapel

*Cathwulf* The blood on the ribbon is not much. That almost makes it worse.A dramatic splash would be cartoonish. This is a thumb smear, dark and dried against black satin, as if whoever tied the box had done it with a cut hand and a steady pulse. Nessa opens the lid with a pen while the rest of us stand around it like parishioners at a cursed christening.Inside lies a white fox-fur stole. Not fake. Not synthetic. Real fur, creamy and luminous under the office lamp, soft enough to make my stomach turn on contact. Nestled beneath it is a card in Torn Eviil's beautiful handwriting.‘For the chapel, since one should dress appropriately for revelation.’The blood is not human.A courtesy sample from one of our more difficult guests.Come alone if you want the living to remain so.The address is printed below. Fairfield. My hand goes cold around the edge of the desk.Therian reads over my shoulder and goes still in that terrifying way he has, all movement stripped out and violence packe

  • Torn between the Alpha and the CEO   28: The dress that bleed

*Cathwulf*I do not sleep in the pack house.I attempt sleep in the pack house, which is a very different sport.Therian gives me a room at the far end of the guest wing and does not call it mine, ours, or safe. He says, "It locks from the inside. Bram is at the stairwell. Nessa is across the hall if you need her. If you need me, send for me."Then he waits like he is expecting another condition.I fold my arms. "And if I do not need you?"His face stays steady, but something tired moves behind it. "Then I stay away."That should be easy. It is not.He leaves. The door closes. The room is warm, clean, and too nice. Heavy curtains. A broad bed. A lamp with a brass base shaped like antlers because werewolves are incapable of decorating without committing to the bit. Somebody has set my new shoes by the wardrobe and left a folded gray sleep shirt on the bed, plain cotton, no lace, no agenda.I hate that the lack of agenda feels intimate.I shower because I smell like dust, old coffee, an

*Cathwulf*On my way to work, walking through the small town of Azalea in Oregon, I am thinking about all the big things that will or might happen soon. The rituals and the first change is certain, unless I should happen to not have a wolf, but that is so r
