"Alpha Derrick, I don't think I can do this any much longer..." Kit, one of the three pups I normally train every evening complains as he tries bringing his chest up from the ground. The three pups have their palms firmly planted on the floor, face facing the earth, and their legs drawn together in a press up position. I tower over them, giving out instructions.

At Kit's words, the other two, Jace and Storm, snicker.

"You haven't even done up to five, Kit," Jace says.

"Such a baby," Storm sniggers, and starts making faces at him.

Kit groans, his eyes shut as he tried once more to lift himself. Sweat trickled down his temples, and while his determination is admirable, it's clear as day that he's tired.

I consult my watch and see that it's a little after four. It's also a Saturday evening.

"Alright boys," I clap, "that will be all for today. You can carry on playing in the woods, but don't cross the border."

"Yes, Alpha Derrick!" They chorus, lifting and dusting themselves. I watch them

    I wake with my mate sprawled out across my chest and I smile as her hair tickles my nose. I would give anything to wake up every day with her hair in my face and her pressed up against me. I had always wanted to meet my mate and I use to imagine what it would be like to finally find her but somehow this is even better than any of my fantasies.It’s her birthday and I should get up and make my mate breakfast in bed for her special day but I just want to soak up these first few moments with her.     It’s my birthday and I can’t sleep.My wolf keeps pushing forward and it feels like there’s an electric current running through my party.     My birthday is tomorrow and the only thing that I want is Derrick.He only left a day ago and already my wolf and I are sad and depressed about him being gone. My wolf has been curled up inside of me, whining softly every time I think about Derrick, which has been a lot today.I don’t know if it’s because Derrick is gone or if it’s because my eighteenth birthday is tomorrow but all day my body has felt weird, strange even. All day my hormones have been out of control. One minute I’m happy and the next I want to start crying.     I’m at the store, working, or trying to anyway.My mind keeps getting distracted with thoughts of Derrick and our dinner last night. More specifically, how he seemed so certain that his mate wasn’t a part of the Red Ridge Pack. I can’t get the way that he had looked at me then out of my head. Every time I replay that part in my head, my heart flips over in my chest and my wolf starts to pace, desperate to get out and go find him.Derrick is leaving today to go check in with the Red Ridge Pack leaders and my wolf is alert inside of me, waiting to catch any sign or scent of him.     I move around the kitchen, prepping the vegetables for dinner. I haven’t been able to stop smiling all day, anticipating my dinner date with Veronica tonight. Not a date, I try to remind myself for the hundredth time. It’s just dinner and she’s only coming over because I lost the bet.I’ve been thinking about Veronica even more than usual the last two days.
