Chapter 1

After estimating my exam score, I suddenly heard Raymond Knox's familiar voice coming from outside the classroom.

"Cora, the exam's over. Isn't it time for you to keep your end of our bet?"

I looked over and saw Raymond, noticing how his grayish blue eyes stood out among the other werewolves. One of his eyebrows was arched, and he looked as poised as ever, like the high-ranking Alpha heir he was.

Cora Knightley huffed. Apart from being our school's cheer captain, she was also Raymond's childhood sweetheart.

"The bet isn't over yet," she said. "You'll only win if Adeline agrees to go to Mangy Hollow College with you. Only then will I agree to date you."

A smirk tugged at Raymond's lips.

"With her current grades, there's nowhere she can apply to except Mangy Hollow," he replied, his voice dripping with the confidence and possessiveness of an Alpha heir. "And besides, she obeys my every word. One word from me is enough to make her go to any school I want."

A group of young Beta heirs and low-ranking Alpha heirs around him burst out laughing. These were the same werewolves who usually had respect for me, acting as if they saw me as Raymond's mate.

Yet now, the disdain in their tone said otherwise.

"Adeline sucks up to Raymond all the time," someone said. "She's fallen from first place to nearly the bottom just to be with him. If he tells her to apply to Mangy Hollow, she'd definitely agree right away!"

"Exactly," another werewolf chimed in. "Forget the university—even if Raymond told her to become a Rogue, she'd probably do it too!"

Another round of laughter erupted.

From the corner, I heard every single word they said.

Raymond's words kept echoing in my mind—I couldn't believe this was the same man who'd been clinging to my body last night.

He was so different from how he usually acted in bed. Whenever we were together, he was always luring me in with his strong, sculpted arms…

Before I could even feel sad, Cora's worried voice interrupted my thoughts.

"Raymond, what if Adeline finds out this was all just a bet between us? Do you think she'll get mad and try to get back at me?"

"You two come from completely different worlds. A lowly werewolf like her wouldn't dare to go against you," he said, comforting her. "Besides, with me around, there's nothing she can do to you."

The other werewolves also echoed the same words, swearing their loyalty to Cora.

In fact, I should probably thank her.

Because if not for her bet with Raymond, someone as ordinary as me would never have had the chance to be with a rich and handsome werewolf like him.

Since I was little, I'd known I was smarter than all the other werewolves around me. It took me only just one glance to understand what others struggled to learn.

But I also knew that for a werewolf like me—who had an ordinary background and mediocre looks—it was dangerous to stand out too much.

So I'd always made sure to stay in second place—just a tiny step behind Cora.

There'd only been one exception.

Right before that one exam, I saw Raymond and Cora kissing.

Thanks to his mesmerizing looks, everyone in our school had a crush on him. I was no exception.

The moment I saw them kiss, I was overwhelmed with jealousy. So out of spite, I answered every question on the test correctly.

That was when I snatched first place away from Cora and even scored far better than she did.

A few days later, a rugby ball slammed into me.

Raymond came jogging over. As soon as he took off his protective gear, he gave me an apologetic look and said, "I'm sorry for accidentally hitting you with my ball. Let me take you to the infirmary."

Silently, I watched him pull off his act in front of me. Of course, I knew that wasn't an accident.

And I was well aware that he'd only gotten close to me for Cora's sake. He probably wanted to get back at me, though I didn't yet know how he'd do it.

But no matter what, this was my only chance to get close to Raymond.

I nodded and took his hand.

From the very first moment I laid eyes on him, I wanted him all to myself. Even though I knew he had ulterior motives, I still believed that if I was sincere enough, I could win him over.

Someday, he might actually love me.

Ever since we parted at the hotel, it had been a year since I last saw Raymond. He still looked as dashing as ever, though he seemed slightly nervous. "Sorry, I didn't mean to disturb you," he said. "I just heard you'd be coming today, so I thought I'd come see you."His eyes, filled with longing, were glued to my face, as if he were trying to memorize my features. "Adeline, I've missed you. When we first separated, I thought time could heal everything. And that I'd still have the chance to get back together with you."Once, I even thought about using my father's power to force you into marriage. But how would that make me any different from Cora?"Seeing you becoming more radiant and liberated day by day, I finally realized you don't belong to me. You belong to yourself. "Someone like me isn't worth turning back to."While he was still wallowing in his sorrow, I handed him a card. "This is all you spent on me when we were still together."Back when I started dating him,

After I became famous, I was still a star even at Lycanshire University. Not long after, my brothers who once kicked me out of the house suddenly showed up, hoping I'd come home with them. Mom, who'd vanished without a trace for years, also reached out to me, saying she wanted to introduce me to a suitable marriage prospect. Without thinking twice, I blocked them all. When I was struggling and desperate, they either abandoned me or trampled all over me. Now that I was doing well, it was absurd of them to think they could just slither their way back into my life.Did they really think I was some fool waiting to be used?Enraged, my brothers tried threatening me. "Send us money right now, or we'll go to the reporters and tell them how you turned your back on your family after becoming famous. Let's see how you'll sell your courses if your reputation is ruined!"But I wasn't afraid of their threats. Every one of them was rotten to the core. I warned them that if I so much a

Raymond shook his head in disbelief. "I had no idea.""Of course, I knew you had nothing to do with this," I said. He perked up, as if a spark of hope in him had been reignited. But I didn't give him a chance."Yet you agreed to help her ruin me, didn't you?" I continued, shattering his hope. "You're just as shameless as she is!"Ignoring his pale expression, I added, "Cora's right. I just wanted to get back at her. Why should the victim have to live with their trauma for the rest of their lives while the bully thrives? "I want to take away everything that means something to her—her grades, her boyfriend, and her future. "Has it ever crossed her mind that every single injury she left on my body will serve as evidence for me to throw her in jail?"I sighed. "Raymond, I pity you. You're nothing but a tool I've used to get back at her."He'd been so protected that he couldn't even imagine the kind of abuse I'd been enduring. "Adeline, did you never have feelings for me?""

Cora had started bullying me ages ago—way before I met Raymond.Since the first exam after my transfer to this school, Cora had cornered me in the toilet, her lackeys in tow. She shoved my head into the toilet bowl, snarling, "So you stole my number spot away from me, huh? It's all your fault I got scolded by Dad! Do you even know who I am?"You're just a werewolf with a lowly bloodline. How dare you steal my spotlight? The toilet water will make you come back to your senses."But I wasn't a useless werewolf who would just put up with such treatment. I immediately reported Cora to the teacher, only to be led to the principal's office. Mr. Knightley shot me a disdainful look. "Ms. Thorne, are you saying my dear daughter is bullying you? That's impossible. She's always been sensible."I heard your father's a criminal, and your mother's a prostitute. Being able to study here is no easy feat for you, right?"I know kids your age are desperate for attention, but it's not good to li

The moment Raymond's gaze landed on my chest, his breath hitched. "What happened? Who did this to you?"I ran my fingers across my scars. "This, you mean?"I continued, "These are the cigarette burns the love of your life left on me. Or are you asking about this?"She carved the word 'slut' into my skin with a penknife. She said I was born one, so it's only right for her to remind me of my identity."Raymond and I had slept together countless times, but I had never allowed him to turn on the lights. I even kept my shirt on. This was the first time he saw the scars on my body. His mind went blank. He clearly didn't want to hear any more details, but I didn't stop. "Those are nothing," I said, guiding his hand to my back. As soon as he sensed the jagged ridges on my skin, he flinched. "Every single one of these burns was made by Cora with a curling iron. 13 in total," I said. "She said it was the only way to make sure I remembered the pain, and my place.""Why… Why did s

Since the day the admission results came out, Raymond had been calling me nonstop. But I didn't have time to deal with him. I was busy managing my online account. I had to make the most of the exposure the incident brought me, turning all that attention into profit. I started sharing study tips on my page, and for a small fee, people could purchase access to all of my study notes. Through knowledge-based content, I was raking in money.Soon, I began landing the right brand deals and building my personal brand, getting more and more people to know who I was. With this positive momentum, my influence and income kept rising. As usual, I declined Raymond's call. Moments later, several messages came in. "Adeline, today's my birthday. Can you come celebrate with me?"The doorbell suddenly rang. I opened the door, only to see a hotel keycard on the floor. It instantly reminded me of the card I once gave him a year ago. It felt like deja vu—but this time, the tables had turne
