CHINYERE FELT STUPID. She felt foolish. She felt like an idiot. No amount of insults could describe how she felt about herself.
Her hands were tied behind her back and her feet were tied as well. Her hair was all over the place but that was the least of her worries.
Where was she? Was she far away from home? Where were they taking her?
Chinyere huffed as she struggled to sit up. She had faked being asleep for the past three hours and not only her head, but her entire body, was aching.
"Look who's finally awake," the man who had knocked her to the ground said and walked up to her.
The truck was large and it hadn't stopped moving since she had woken up.
She wasn't the only person in the truck. There were other several kids and teenagers, both boys and girls.
Some were crying, others were sleeping, while others were shaking with fear.
There were two benches on both sides of the truck. Muscular men occupied the seats. Tobi was sitting alongside one of the men.
The man crouched down in front of Chinyere and held her chin, "This one is a pretty one. She'll bring in millions?"
Bring in millions? We're they planning to sell her?
Chinyere's eyes widened and she jerked her head out of his grasp.
The man chuckled and stood up, "She needs to learn some respect."
Chinyere tore her eyes away from the man and they landed on Tobi.
Tobi. The person who betrayed her.
Chinyere wanted so much to blame her misfortune on Tobi but she knew it wasn't his fault.
It was hers.
It was her fault for trusting someone whom she'd never met before.
It was number one on her list of 'What Not To Do', a list she'd created in her head as she faked being asleep.
What Not To Do
1. DO NOT trust strangers.
"Don't worry," the man announced to the hostages and stepped away from Chinyere, "we'll be there soon. I received a text and the customers are excited to meet you."
After the man sat down, a young boy let out a loud cry.
The boy was just a few centimetres away from Chinyere.
Unlike Chinyere, his hands and feet were not tied.
The boy was looking around with tears streaming down his eyes.
Chinyere looked at the boy with pity. He looked to be around nine years old.
"Shut up!" one of the men seated beside Tobi yelled and the young boy immediately kept quiet but he was shaking.
Chinyere grew the courage to speak to him, "What is your name?"
"E-Emeka," the boy stammered.
"I'm Chinyere," Chinyere said, even though she knew that the boy didn't care.
They had other things to worry about than finding out what her name was.
Silence filled the truck for about two minutes before Chinyere spoke up again, "How old are you, Emeka?"
"Eleven," Emeka answered.
Chinyere was shocked. He most definitely looked too small for an eleven year old.
Chinyere wanted to ask him how he'd found himself in the same position as herself but she was terrified of the muscular men who were listening to their conversation.
Emeka was bald but his bald head suited him. He was wearing shorts and a short sleeved shirt and his feet were bare.
Chinyere's thoughts drifted to her family.
Had they found out she was missing? Were they worried about her?
And her friends?
She should have listened to Tunde. He was right. Why hadn't she just listened to Tunde and Teacher Johnson?
While Chinyere was still questioning her stupid decisions, the car came to a sudden stop. The force made her fall onto her back.
"Tobi," the man who had knocked her to the ground stood up, "open the door."
Tobi stood up without a word and opened the door to the truck.
Chinyere assumed that the man who had knocked her to the ground was the boss because of how everyone obeyed him.
"You four," the boss said to the muscular men who occupied the seats, "get them ready. I'm going to bring in the customers one by one."
Tobi and the man jumped out of the truck.
One of the muscular men walked up to Chinyere and pulled her into a sitting position.
The rest were taking care of the others; waking them up and threatening them that if they didn't stop crying, they would kill them.
When the men were done with their task, they went back to their seats and Tobi returned with his boss but they weren't alone.
There was a long line of men in expensive clothing following them.
"Are they ready?" Tobi asked once he entered the truck.
"Yes," the muscular men answered.
Ready for what? Chinyere asked herself.
"Papa, bring in the first customer," Tobi called out to the boss.
Papa? Is that his father?
Chinyere felt her heart beat faster, as though it wanted to jump out of her chest.
A wealthy looking man climbed into the truck with help from Tobi.
He analysed each one of them carefully.
When his eyes landed on Chinyere, she felt a lump grow in her throat.
Fortunately, he moved his eyes away from her but they landed on Emeka.
Emeka seemed to be frozen as he looked up at the man.
"I want that child," the man pointed at Emeka.
"How much do you have?" Tobi asked.
"How about... Fifty thousand Naira?"
Tobi folded his arms, "Do you think kidnapping children is easy? Biko, that amount is too little."
Were they seriously discussing the price of a human being?
"You and your father really mean business," the man chuckled and glanced at Tobi's father.
"Prices have increased, oh," Tobi's father said, "we have people to pay and we also need food to eat."
At the sound of food, Chinyere's stomach grumbled. She was hungry but hunger was the least of her problems.
The man walked up to Emeka. Emeka looked at him with fear, fresh tears brimming in his eyes.
He studied Emeka and put his hand around Emeka's arm. "He's quite small and so thin but I can train him. How much do you want for him?"
"Eh... What about six hundred thousand Naira?" Tobi asked.
The man tapped his chin as though he was deep in thought before saying, "Deal."
"Prince," Tobi motioned to one of the muscular men, "take the boy out."
Prince stood up from his seat and walked to Emeka, stepping on a few of the hostages.
He lifted Emeka by his arms effortlessly and threw him over his shoulder, "Lead the way, Boss."
Emeka's buyer nodded and walked out of the truck with Prince following behind him.
Emeka kicked and screamed but Prince did not seem fazed by the boy's actions and instead gripped him tighter as he jumped out of the truck.
Chinyere saw the fear in Emeka's eyes as tears freely dropped from them.
If they could do this to a young child, what more her?
She brought her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them.
"Papa," Tobi said, "bring in the next customer."
"Okay."
Tobi's father helped the next customer to climb onto the truck.
Chinyere studied the second customer.
He was also very well dressed and looked sharp in his blue suit but he was older than the first customer. Way older!
Probably fifty years of age and he wore thick glasses.
He looked at the faces of each hostage in the truck carefully but there was only one person who caught his eye.
Chinyere prayed that he wouldn't notice her but immediately the old man saw her, he did not avert his eyes.
CHINYERE SIGHED AS she thought about all that happened in the past four months.Four months had passed since she had woken up in the hospital and one month had passed since the court case.Amanda was sentenced to thirty five years imprisonment with a five year probation for first degree murder, kidnapping and human trafficking. She pledged guilty to all her charges and no further investigation was carried out on her part.Amanda had also given away Tobi's and his father's location and they – and their minions – were sentenced to twenty years imprisonment for human trafficking.Tobi was furious that Amanda betrayed them by revealing their location and Amanda bluntly stated, "If I'm going down, I'm not going down alone."Several of the trafficked/sold people were found and returned to their parents while their buyers were arrested and made to pay a fine for the damages caused.
WHITE LIGHT WAS all Chinyere saw when she opened her eyes."Ugh," she groaned as she used her arm to block out as much light as she could from her eyes."Sorry," she heard a deep voice say before the lights were turned off.Chinyere lowered her arm and she studied the room where she was. With the beeping heart monitor next to her bed and the intravenous tubes connected to her arm, Chinyere concluded that she was in a hospital room."What am I doing here?" she asked no one in particular."You were shot and you've been down for two days now," the deep, manly voice said again and Chinyere looked at the person who spoke."Daddy!" She yelled and tried to jump off her bed but the pain that flowed through her left arm restricted her from doing so.Her father sat beside her on the hospital bed and looked into her eyes before giving her a tight hug, one th
CHINYERE NOW KNEW how it felt to be so close and yet so far. They were so close to escaping and yet so far from escaping as Mr. Oko and Amadi had already caught up to them."Get over here!" Amadi yelled. She could not explain how she was feeling. Her heart was beating irregularly and as fast as a race car. It was as though it wanted to jump out of her chest. She had never been so scared in her entire life."What do we do now?" she asked Tina.Tina took a deep breath before answering, "I guess we listen to them and follow them.""Biko, don't waste our time," Mr. Oko said."Is that it?" Chinyere asked. "We came this far only to end up back with them?""When we get out of the bus, I will run and I want you to run in the opposite direction and find help," Tina said. "Don't forget to run only after I do, that will cause a distraction.
THE GIRLS WERE awake by six in the morning and ready to leave the hotel. They had each taken a turn to bath. Tina gave Solomon a bath while Chinyere rummaged through the bag for the phone."What are you looking for?" Tina asked as she walked out of the bathroom with Solomon dressed in fresh clothes."The phone," Chinyere grunted and then sighed a sigh of relief when she found it."Where did you get the phone?" Tina asked."I got it from Chibinobim," Chinyere answered. "I thought it would be of help to us."Tina nodded and said, "Call whoever you're calling fast. Theyonly live a few minutes away from here. If we don't hurry they'll catch up to us."Chinyere nodded and punched in her mother's number. She lifted the phone to her ear as she waited for Chioma to answer the call."Sorry, the number you are calling is not available. Please try agai
ESCAPING THROUGH THE gate seemed to be a problem for them as it was locked and they didn't have the remote. They contemplated climbing over the gate but how was that possible with a two month old child?"Where do you think the remote could be?" Chinyere whispered."I don't know," Tina whisper yelled. "This is one thing that we didn't think about."The gate could only be opened and closed with the remote control. The gateman was sleeping on a bench that was just a few feet away from the gate. His snores were so loud that he could be mistaken for a pig.The gateman changed his sleeping position and a jingling sound filled Chinyere's and Tina's ears.Chinyere turned to the sleeping gateman and looked at the shiny object that was wrapped around his index finger. It was a band of keys."Of course," Tina said. "Only the g
"DO YOU HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED?" Tina asked Chinyere.Chinyere nodded as she zipped up the bag.It was already Monday night. Tuesday night would mark two weeks of her living with the Okos.It was unbelievable how two weeks had already gone by and also unbelievable how so much had happened in just two weeks.Chinyere had avoided Mr. Oko throughout the past week. She would not be present during breakfast, lunch and supper. She fed on whatever remains Tina would bring her.Chibinobim had also not returned home since the incident the previous week had occurred, but it didn't bother her. It was better that way."Have you packed all you need?" Chinyere asked.Tonight was the night that they planned their clean escape. They had stayed up all night the previous week, studying the actions of everyone in the house at night. They discov
ADIMCHIMPKA WAS EXHAUSTED. He had dark circles and large bags under his eyes and he had only slept for a total of four hours in the past two days.He was literally a walking dead.He remembered how Chioma had rushed into his room on Sunday night to tell him that Chinyere had called. He had made a trip to the police station early the next morning and reported to them that they had received a phone call from Chinyere. He washed his face and dried it with a towel before making it to the kitchen. His wives were in the kitchen preparing breakfast."Ututu oma m, di m," his first wife, Adaiba, greeted him."Good morning," he responded. His two other wives greeted him as well and he nodded in response."Have the police found anything?" Adaiba asked.Adimchimpka shook his head, "No. Not yet. I just want to know how she found herself in Ebonyi state.""I also wonde
CHINYERE WOKE UP early the next morning. Earlier than she usually would. The first thing she did was say her morning prayer before sitting up on the bed.The bottle she used as an ice pack was lying on the floor and the ice had melted, leaving a pool of water on the floor. She grabbed a black pencil skirt from the closet with a red blouse and undergarments then made her way to the bathroom in the bedroom. She looked at her face in the mirror. The stinging in her cheek had stopped but the slap had left a bruise on her face. The blood on her lip had dried up and Chinyere couldn't help but think of how ugly she looked. She just wanted to be a model, and look where she had ended up.She wanted to cry but she had no tears left to cry.She brushed her teeth, all the while thinking of the conversation she was going to have with Tina. She would finally kn
CHINYERE DID NOT know what to say after what Tina had told her.She wondered why Amanda was after her family and claimed that it was her father who had killed her mother when Mr. Oko had killed her himself.Chinyere opened her mouth to speak but nothing came out.Just then, Nnena, one of the maids, entered the kitchen.Nnena greeted them by bowing her head and then she spoke up, "Mr. Oko said that you should start preparing dinner.""Okay, thank you," Tina said and Nnena walked out of the kitchen."Isn't Esther around?" Chinyere asked.Esther was normally the one who started preparing dinner and Chinyere had realised that Esther had not stepped into the kitchen after breakfast was made."I don't know, but when I came this morning she was sick," Tina said. "I know that she's had a week immune system from the time I started living here."Chinyere nodded, "What are we going to cook?""
