Chapter 7

Childless

 

Since the infection of the Base had been playing on my mind most of the sleepless night, I decided to visit Cosmo first the next morning.

He had so many already infected people lingering around him and knew firsthand what it was like to be isolated from everyone. He would have the comforting answers I was looking for; I was sure of it.

Cosmo wasn’t hard to find; he was sitting on the twenty-fifth floor with Fox and his other friend close by his side. They had their heads close together and were talking in hushed tones, giggling every now and then. The other person with him was the same kid I had seen that night over by the windows. He kept his black hoodie up and scuffed his grey sneakers on the ground when he chattered on the bench they sat at.

Rows of identical wooden benches with adjoining tabletops had been lined together on the floor, which were swarming with people. Each table was as long and wide as a bus and scattered with various personal belongings.
