"The venom is fighting back, Elara... every time my heart beats for you, the nightshade tries to tear my chest apart from the inside."

Silas's voice broke through the midnight silence before he collapsed against the edge of the obsidian bed. Elara jolted awake and reached for him, her heart racing at the sight of his trembling hands. Black veins had spread beneath his skin, crawling up his neck toward the pulse point below his jaw.

"Silas!" She caught his arm before he could fall. "What happened? You were fine when we went to sleep."

He tried to answer, but another wave of pain seized his chest. His head dropped forward, and a strangled groan escaped him. Elara pushed the blanket aside and saw the dark lines spreading beneath his shirt.

"No. Not again." She pressed her fingers against his wrist, feeling his heartbeat stumble. "You told me the poison was weakening. You told me I was helping you."

"It was." Silas clenched his jaw. "But something changed. The venom is adapting, little Luna. It knows your energy is pushing it back, and now it is fighting harder."

[DING! SYSTEM EMERGENCY WARNING!]

[HOST ALERT: NIGHTSHADE VENOM HAS ENTERED AN ADAPTIVE STAGE. PREVIOUS HEALING METHODS ARE LOSING EFFECTIVENESS.]

[WARNING: ALPHA SILAS STONE'S VITAL ENERGY IS COLLAPSING. A DEEPER BOND CONNECTION IS REQUIRED TO STABILIZE THE POISON.]

Elara stared at the notification. "What do you mean, a deeper bond connection? We already have a permanent mating mark. We're true mates!"

[SYSTEM RESPONSE: THE HOST'S WHITE ROYAL ENERGY MUST REACH THE ALPHA'S CORE TO SUPPRESS THE ADAPTIVE VENOM.]

"Then tell me how!" she snapped. "I don't have time for riddles while my mate is dying."

Silas caught her hand, his fingers trembling around hers. "Don't risk yourself because of me. Whatever the system says, you don't have to obey it."

She stared at him in disbelief. "Did you hit your head? You're my mate. I'm not going to watch you die because you're too stubborn to let me help."

Another spasm cut off his reply. His back arched, and the veins around his throat darkened until they looked like cracks spreading through stone. Elara climbed onto the bed and positioned herself beside him, ignoring his weak attempt to push her away.

"Tell me where it hurts most." She placed one palm over his chest, directly above his heart, and the other beside it. "And don't tell me to stop unless I ask you first."

"Everywhere," he managed. "It feels like something is clawing through my heart."

Elara closed her eyes and concentrated on the power that had awakened inside her. She remembered the silver-white light that had surrounded her during her transformation, the energy that had shattered objects without her touching them. This time, she needed to control it instead of letting it burst out of her.

"I can feel it fighting me," Elara whispered. "It's like the poison knows I'm trying to remove it."

The light pulsed beneath her fingers, and a sharp sting travelled up her arms. Elara sucked in a breath but kept her hands in place. The system's warning flashed again, urging her to maintain contact, while Silas's fingers tightened around her waist.

"You're hurting yourself," he rasped.

"I'm fine. Focus on breathing."

His eyes searched her face, but he obeyed. Elara poured more of her strength into the bond until the silver glow steadied and the darkness finally began to retreat.

[SYSTEM NOTICE: WHITE ROYAL ENERGY HAS REACHED THE ALPHA'S CORE. ADAPTIVE VENOM RESISTANCE DETECTED. MAINTAIN CONTACT.]

Silas reached for her waist, his large hands gripping her as he fought through another wave of agony. His forehead pressed against her shoulder, and his breathing turned ragged. "Don't let go. I can feel you inside the darkness. Your energy is the only thing keeping me here."

"Then hold on to me." Elara leaned closer, allowing the silver light to flow through their mating bond. "You survived this poison before I came into your life. You'll survive it now that I'm here. I refuse to become a widow before I've even enjoyed being your wife."

The black veins began to retreat. First, the ones around his chest faded, then the dark lines along his neck slowly pulled away from his pulse point. Silas released a long, shaking breath, and the tension in his shoulders eased.

[SYSTEM NOTICE: VENOM SUPPRESSION SUCCESSFUL. ALPHA SILAS STONE'S VITAL SIGNS ARE STABILIZING.]

[WARNING: ADAPTIVE NIGHTSHADE VENOM REMAINS ACTIVE. THIS IS A TEMPORARY SUPPRESSION, NOT A COMPLETE CURE.]

Elara opened her eyes and read the final warning twice. Relief washed over her, but it didn't last. "Temporary? You mean it can come back?"

Silas lifted his head. His face was pale, and a faint trace of black remained beneath his skin, but the darkness had disappeared from his neck. "It means you bought me more time."

"That's not good enough." She brushed damp hair from his forehead. "We need a permanent cure. I'm not spending every night wondering whether you'll wake up breathing or screaming."

His expression softened. "You shouldn't have to carry that burden."

"Unfortunately for you, I'm carrying it anyway." She tried to pull her hands away, but he caught them and held them against his chest. His heartbeat was still weak, yet it no longer stumbled beneath her touch. "You don't get to decide which problems I'm allowed to fight beside you."

Elara's expression softened. "And now?"

"Now I wake up terrified that the one person I cannot afford to lose will be taken from me." He drew her closer. "I can fight warriors, witches, and entire armies, but I cannot fight the thought of losing you."

She swallowed the tightness in her throat. "Then stop acting like you have to fight everything alone. I'm not going anywhere, Silas."

His arms tightened around her waist as he pulled her against his chest. The silver streak in her hair brushed his cheek, and he buried his face against it, breathing in the familiar scent that had become more comforting than anything else in the world.

"You have no idea what you've done to me," he murmured. "Before you, I thought surviving was enough. Now I want a future, and every part of that future has you in it."

Elara rested her cheek against his shoulder, listening to the steadier rhythm beneath his skin. "Then you had better stay alive long enough to enjoy it. I have plans for this pack, and I need its Alpha standing beside me."

She lifted her head and touched his cheek. "Promise me something. The next time you feel the poison returning, you wake me immediately. No hiding it, no pretending you're fine, and absolutely no suffering in silence."

"I promise." He turned his face into her palm and kissed it. "But you must promise me something too. Never believe that you are responsible for keeping me alive. I want you beside me because you choose me, not because some curse has tied our lives together."

Elara smiled faintly. "I chose you long before I understood how complicated you were. You're stuck with me now."

Silas looked at her as though those words meant more than any vow he had ever taken. He pulled her close again, holding her while their breathing slowly settled into the same rhythm.

"You hold my life in the palm of your hands, little Luna... and I have never trusted anyone with my soul until today.”

"If Kade thinks a few desperate warriors can break through our northern defenses, he's about to find out what a real Alpha does to trespassers."The war horns sounded across Obsidian Fang, breaking the silence of the freezing night. Guards rushed toward the northern walls while warriors grabbed their weapons and hurried into formation. Silas stood in the armoury, strapping his heavy iron broadsword across his chest as a messenger delivered the latest report."Alpha, Red Moon scouts have crossed the northern marker. They're moving through the trees and approaching the ravine."Silas tightened the leather strap around his sword. "How many?""At least twenty, possibly more following behind them. Their leader appears to be Alpha Kade."A dangerous expression crossed Silas's face. "So the fool has finally decided to stop sending letters and start a war."Outside, the snow-covered courtyard had become a scene of hurried activity. Warriors mounted their patrol wolves, archers took positions

"You spent years treating me like pack trash, Rowena, but the blood of a Beta King runs in these veins, and it's time you learned your place."The midday sun shone over the Obsidian Fang courtyard as warriors moved between training stations. Wooden swords clashed, instructors shouted commands, and several elite guards practised their fighting formations. Near the edge of the training ground, Milo struggled to push himself upright after stumbling backward from a heavy sparring dummy. His chest rose and fell rapidly as he rubbed his aching shoulder. He had insisted on joining the training session, determined to become strong enough to protect Elara. Unfortunately, his body was still adjusting to the awakening that had begun inside the archive."Come on, Milo. You can do better than that!" one of the younger guards called out.Milo straightened his back and tried to look confident. "I know. I just need another chance."Before he could return to the dummy, a familiar voice interrupted him

"They told you your bloodline was just common wolf stock, little Luna, but magic of this magnitude doesn't come from ordinary packs." The words echoed through the subterranean archive as Silas stood beside Elara, studying the ancient runes etched into the hidden wall panels. Their faint golden glow reflected in his grey eyes, making the markings appear almost alive. He had explored the Obsidian Fang archives countless times, but he had never seen anything like this. Elara glanced at him. "First, I discover I'm a White Royal Wolf, and now you're telling me there's something even stranger about my bloodline. How many secrets am I supposed to have?" Silas moved closer to the wall. "I wish I had an answer. These markings are older than most wolf kingdoms. Even the previous Alpha Kings were forbidden from studying certain records kept here." "Wonderful. I'm a walking mystery with a dangerous family history." A faint smile touched his lips, but his expression soon became serious. The st

"I didn't choose you because I was dying, and I didn't make you my Luna out of desperation. I did it because my soul refuses to exist without yours."Elara sat quietly in his lap, her back resting against his chest. Her fingers moved gently along the faint black veins that remained on his neck, tracing the places where her healing kiss had slowly driven the poison away. The marks were no longer as dark as before, and his skin had regained much of its healthy colour."You're staring at me again," she murmured, a small smile forming on her lips.Silas tightened his arms around her waist. "Am I not allowed to admire my own Luna?""Your Luna? I thought I was the troublesome woman who kept interfering with your peaceful life.""That woman has become my favourite problem."Elara laughed softly. She turned her head to look at him, studying the handsome face he no longer needed to hide behind his iron mask. The black veins were fading, but a few stubborn traces remained near his jaw and neck.

"Send another raven, I don't care if they shoot it down! Tell Elara I'll hand over half my territory if she just steps foot back across our border!"The heavy crystal goblet smashed against the stone wall, scattering glittering pieces across the blood-stained throne room. Alpha Kade stood beside his throne, his chest rising and falling with fury as the remaining servants hurried out of his way. Nobody dared approach him while his temper was this bad, especially not when the entire Red Moon Pack was falling apart around them.Outside the great hall, the northern fields had turned gray and lifeless. Crops that once stretched across the land had withered, leaving behind dry soil and brittle stalks. The pack's food stores were running dangerously low, and wolves who had once bowed respectfully to their Alpha now gathered in small groups to whisper about rebellion."Another shipment has failed to arrive," one of the guards reported cautiously. "The eastern merchants have cancelled their ag
