Chapter 5: Defying the Crown

The morning sun broke over the snow-capped peaks of the Obsidian Fortress, casting pale golden light across the frozen courtyards. Inside the Great Hall, a thick layer of frost covered the tall arched windows, but the air near the hearth burned with silent, suffocating tension.

Standing in the center of the hall was Sir Julian of the Royal Guard. Clad in polished gold-and-white armor that looked absurdly pristine against the rugged stone walls, the capital envoy held a heavy parchment scroll sealed with the Crown Prince's crimson wax.

"Duchess Elodie," Julian announced, his voice ringing with aristocratic condescension as he ignored Duke Grim Cavendish entirely. "His Highness Prince Jamie St. James has learned of your forced marriage and the tragic fire in the northern armory. He fears for your safety in this desolate fortress."

Elodie sat in the carved high-backed chair beside Grim, wearing a gown of midnight-blue velvet that matched the winter sky. Her hair was swept up in elaborate silver braids, exposing the long, slender line of her neck.

"Prince Jamie's concern is touchingly misplaced, Sir Julian," Elodie said calmly, resting her elbows on the armrests and clasping her hands together. "As you can see, I am in excellent health, and my husband's fortress is perfectly secure."

Julian's eyes flicked nervously to Grim, who sat beside her like a sleeping shadow. The Duke wore his dark military coat, his bare hand resting idly on the hilt of his dark steel sword. The black veins on his neck were subdued, hidden beneath a potion elixir Elodie had mixed at dawn using the fortress apothecary herbs.

"His Highness does not share your confidence, Duchess," Julian insisted, unrolling the imperial scroll with a flourish. "By royal decree of the Crown Prince, you are hereby summoned back to the capital immediately to testify regarding the northern treason and Lord Vane's arrest. An imperial escort awaits you at the outer gates."

A cold wind whistled through the high rafters of the hall. The northern knights standing guard along the perimeter shifted their weight, their hands resting on their pommels.

"And if my wife declines the Crown Prince's generous invitation?" Grim spoke for the first time. His voice was a low, smooth purr that vibrated through the stone floor, carrying an unspoken threat that made Sir Julian flinch.

Julian swallowed hard, taking a half-step back. "Your Grace, an imperial summons is not an invitation. Refusing it is an act of defiance against the throne."

Elodie rose slowly from her seat. She did not wait for Grim to defend her; she stepped straight to the edge of the dais, looking down at the capital knight with cool disdain.

"Tell Prince Jamie," Elodie said, her voice clear and carrying across the entire hall, "that the Duchess of the Obsidian Fortress does not answer to decrees written by a Crown Prince. If he wishes to question me about Lord Vane, he may travel north and present his inquiries in person before my husband's court."

Sir Julian's face flushed crimson with anger. "Duchess! You dare turn your back on the royal family? Prince Jamie personally arranged your betrothal! He expects your loyalty!"

"My loyalty belongs to my husband," Elodie declared, without a single second of hesitation.

Beside her, Grim's eyes darkened with a surge of fierce, dark pride. He stood up from his chair, his tall frame looming over the dais, stepping until he stood shoulder to shoulder with Elodie. In full view of the capital envoy and forty northern councilors, Grim reached out and took Elodie's hand in his bare palm, entwining his long fingers tightly with hers.

The gesture was silent, absolute, and completely undeniable. A public declaration of an unbreakable alliance.

Julian stared at their joined hands, his jaw slack with shock. "You... you have been corrupted by this monster."

"Watch your tongue, knight," Commander Waylon warned, drawing his broadsword three inches from its scabbard with a sharp metallic rasp.

"Return to the capital, Sir Julian," Elodie commanded, her dark eyes locking onto the envoy. "Inform Prince Jamie that if he sends another fake envoy or another poisoned bottle of wine to my home, I will personally release his secret bank ledgers to the Imperial Senate."

Julian gasped, his eyes widening in sheer panic. "You... how do you know about that?"

"Leave," Grim cut him off softly.

The single word carried the crushing weight of a war commander. Sir Julian stumbled backward, clutching the royal scroll to his chest, before turning on his heel and fleeing through the heavy oak doors.

As the doors slammed shut behind the envoy, a breathless quiet returned to the Great Hall.

Grim turned his gaze down to Elodie. He did not let go of her hand. Instead, his thumb rubbed against her knuckles, his touch burning hot through her velvet gloves.

"You just declared war on the Crown Prince," Grim murmured, his voice laced with a dangerous, thrilling warmth.

"No," Elodie whispered, looking up into his ice-blue eyes with an unyielding smile. "I just told him the game has changed."

Grim leaned down, his breath brushing against her ear as he pulled her slightly closer. "Then what is our next move, my clever Duchess?"

Elodie's smile turned razor-sharp. "Next, we cure your curse completely, gather our northern army, and march to the capital to take his throne."

The capital villa of House Cavendish stood tucked away in the northern quarter, built from white marble and ironwood. Inside the master suite, soft lamplight flickered against silk draperies. Elodie stood before an oval mirror, smoothing the waist of a gown crafted from dark navy velvet and mithril thread. The fabric shimmered like stars, its collar lined with silver scales functioning as armor. Grim stood behind her, adjusting the silver clasp of his cloak. In the mirror's reflection, his ice-blue eyes met hers with unshielded intensity. His tall frame dwarfed hers, yet his posture held a quiet reverence that made her heart flutter. "You look like an empress preparing for war," Grim murmured, his voice a low rumble through the room. "I am a duchess preparing to dismantle a prince," Elodie corrected with a small smile, turning to face him. "How do I look?" Grim stepped closer until his boots brushed her silver hem. He reached out with calloused fingers, adjusting a stray pin

Standing at the top of the marble staircase were Count Thomas Youngblood and Countess Marianne, Elodie's father and stepmother. Beside them stood her half-sister, Chloe, wearing a dress of pink silk. When the carriage door swung open, Count Thomas stepped forward with a wide, artificial smile."Elodie, my dear daughter!" Thomas called out with false warmth. "We heard rumors that you survived the northern winter. Come inside! Your family has missed you dearly."Elodie stepped onto the marble pavement, her midnight-blue velvet cloak rustling around her ankles. She did not return her father's smile. Her dark eyes remained unreadable as she looked up at the people who had treated her as a disposable tool for twenty years.Grim dismounted

The carriage rolled smoothly across the frozen highway, its silver dragon crest gleaming under the sun.Inside the cabin, a stone brazier filled with charcoal kept the winter chill at bay. Elodie sat on the bench, spreading parchment ledgers across a table. Her dark velvet cloak rested over her shoulders, its silver embroidery catching the firelight.Across from her sat Grim. Wearing a black silk shirt and trousers, his imposing frame filled the cabin. His ice-blue eyes tracked her fingers as she organized documents detailing Crown Prince Jamie's secret debts."You have been scanning those numbers since we crossed the border three hours ago, Elodie," Grim said softly, his voice vibrating through the space."These numbers are our sharpest weapons, Husband," Elodie replied, her quill dipping into ink. "Prince Jamie borrowed two million gold sovereigns from underground syndicates to fund his private knights. When I present these notes to the Imperial Senate at the Winter Gala, his standi

It was Sir Cedric, Saintess Ariel's chief knight commander, his face contorted in an arrogant sneer."Grand Duke Cavendish," Cedric's projected voice echoed across the basin, metallic and distorted. "If you hear this message, my mercenaries failed. But Saintess Ariel foresaw your arrival. The mercenary carrying this mark was injected with a blood corruption curse."Before Grim could react, the dark mist surged forward, diving straight toward the Starlight Lilies in Elodie's hands."Elodie, drop them!"
