The subterranean archives beneath the Obsidian Fortress smelled of parchment, dried elderberries, and cold stone. Dust motes drifted through high shafts of moonlight filtering through narrow grates.

Elodie ran her fingertips across the worn leather spine of a heavy folio, her eyes tracing High Valyrian runes. Beside her on the dark oak desk, a bronze oil lamp cast an amber glow over medical ledgers and botanical maps.

Grim stood near the arched iron door, his heavy military coat discarded on a stone bench. He wore only a white linen shirt, top buttons unfastened to reveal dark branching lines of the Black Vein Curse pulsing faintly against his collarbone.

"You have been searching through those scrolls for over two hours, Elodie," Grim said, his deep voice carrying a low resonance through the vault. "The royal physicians in the capital insisted for years that this affliction has no cure."

"The royal physicians were paid lavishly by Prince Jamie to ensure you remained weak and dying," Elodie replied without looking up. She flipped a parchment page, pointing her index finger at an illustration of a star-shaped white flower.

"The Black Vein Curse is not a natural blood disease," she explained, her voice sharp with focus. "It is a dark mana crystallization process. Every time you channel your aura in battle, excess magical power hardens into microscopic black glass inside your blood vessels, slowly blocking circulation to your heart."

Grim stepped away from the door, his leather boots striking flagstones with grace. "And this obscure flower has the property to dissolve hardened mana glass?"

"The Starlight Lily does not grow anywhere in the south," Elodie explained, turning toward him as he approached. "It blooms exclusively on the treacherous frost cliffs of the Northern Spine during subterranean snowstorms. The court suppressed medical records regarding its properties so no northern lord could brew the antidote."

Grim stopped beside her chair. He reached out with his bare hand, his fingers catching a stray lock of dark hair that had slipped from her hairpins. His touch was warm, radiating a steady heat that sent a subtle shiver through her shoulders.

"You traveled hundreds of miles across the empire to marry a man condemned to die," Grim whispered, leaning down until his shadow enveloped her completely. "Yet here you sit in a cold cellar at midnight, unearthing remedies for a husband you barely know."

Elodie met his piercing ice-blue eyes without flinching, though her heart beat with an erratic rhythm. "I told you before. I do not intend to become a helpless widow at the mercy of Prince Jamie's political ambitions."

"Is that truly your only reason?" Grim asked softly. His thumb moved gently along the soft curve of her jawline, his touch lingering with dangerous intimacy. "Pure calculation and cold self-preservation?"

Elodie felt heat rising along her neck. She raised her right hand and placed her palm flat against his chest, feeling the solid, powerful thud of his heart beneath the thin linen of his shirt. The restless pulse of the curse was still present, but beneath it lay a fierce, protective vitality that drew her in.

"When I first arrived at this fortress," Elodie admitted, her voice dropping into a quiet confession, "I thought only of surviving the original story. But now... I care deeply about the man standing in front of me."

Grim's breath caught in his throat. His icy gaze softened, burning with a sudden, intense devotion that made her pulse race. He slid his arm around her waist, drawing her up from the chair until her body pressed firmly against his chest.

"Then hear my vow, Elodie," Grim whispered, his lips hovering a fraction of an inch above hers as his dark hair brushed her forehead. "If you free me from this blood curse, my blade and my life belong entirely to you. Not to the empire, not to the northern council, but to you alone."

Before Elodie could offer her answer, the heavy iron door of the archives creaked open on its hinges. Chief Maid Effie stepped hurriedly into the vault, holding a sealed copper cylinder in her hands.

"Your Grace," Effie reported breathlessly, bowing her head. "A secret messenger from our capital informant just arrived at the postern gate. This document was retrieved from Lord Vane's hidden wall safe following his arrest."

Grim did not release Elodie's waist immediately. He kept his arm wrapped securely around her, turning his head toward the maid with reluctance. "Open the seal."

Effie broke the crimson wax seal and pulled out a rolled piece of black parchment inscribed with glowing silver ink.

"It is a confidential directive from Saintess Ariel," Effie revealed, her voice filled with quiet disgust. "She instructs Lord Vane to dispatch men to the frost cliffs, harvest every blooming Starlight Lily, and burn the valley before spring thaw."

Elodie's eyes narrowed into slits of sharp, dangerous resolve. "Ariel knows the antidote exists. She is attempting to destroy the entire crop before we can reach it."

Grim's expression hardened into a formidable mask of military authority. He looked down at Elodie, his hand tightening protectively against her waist.

"The frost cliffs lie three days north through the heart of the blizzard," Grim noted.

Elodie placed her hand over his, her eyes flashing with unyielding resolve. "Then we prepare our horses and ride tonight."

The capital villa of House Cavendish stood tucked away in the northern quarter, built from white marble and ironwood. Inside the master suite, soft lamplight flickered against silk draperies. Elodie stood before an oval mirror, smoothing the waist of a gown crafted from dark navy velvet and mithril thread. The fabric shimmered like stars, its collar lined with silver scales functioning as armor. Grim stood behind her, adjusting the silver clasp of his cloak. In the mirror's reflection, his ice-blue eyes met hers with unshielded intensity. His tall frame dwarfed hers, yet his posture held a quiet reverence that made her heart flutter. "You look like an empress preparing for war," Grim murmured, his voice a low rumble through the room. "I am a duchess preparing to dismantle a prince," Elodie corrected with a small smile, turning to face him. "How do I look?" Grim stepped closer until his boots brushed her silver hem. He reached out with calloused fingers, adjusting a stray pin

The dark stone walls of the Youngblood family mansion loomed ahead, surrounded by manicured hedge gardens and gilded iron gates. As the ducal carriage pulled into the cobblestone courtyard, servants clad in green liveries rushed forward, bowing nervously. Standing at the top of the marble staircase were Count Thomas Youngblood and Countess Marianne, Elodie's father and stepmother. Beside them stood her half-sister, Chloe, wearing a dress of pink silk. When the carriage door swung open, Count Thomas stepped forward with a wide, artificial smile."Elodie, my dear daughter!" Thomas called out with false warmth. "We heard rumors that you survived the northern winter. Come inside! Your family has missed you dearly."Elodie stepped onto the marble pavement, her midnight-blue velvet cloak rustling around her ankles. She did not return her father's smile. Her dark eyes remained unreadable as she looked up at the people who had treated her as a disposable tool for twenty years.Grim dismounted

The carriage rolled smoothly across the frozen highway, its silver dragon crest gleaming under the sun.Inside the cabin, a stone brazier filled with charcoal kept the winter chill at bay. Elodie sat on the bench, spreading parchment ledgers across a table. Her dark velvet cloak rested over her shoulders, its silver embroidery catching the firelight.Across from her sat Grim. Wearing a black silk shirt and trousers, his imposing frame filled the cabin. His ice-blue eyes tracked her fingers as she organized documents detailing Crown Prince Jamie's secret debts."You have been scanning those numbers since we crossed the border three hours ago, Elodie," Grim said softly, his voice vibrating through the space."These numbers are our sharpest weapons, Husband," Elodie replied, her quill dipping into ink. "Prince Jamie borrowed two million gold sovereigns from underground syndicates to fund his private knights. When I present these notes to the Imperial Senate at the Winter Gala, his standi

Behind them, Commander Waylon and fifty northern knights escorted the bound mercenaries in heavy chains, their armor gleaming in the morning light.A large crowd of northern soldiers, servants, and councilors had gathered in the central courtyard, their faces anxious. Rumors of the armory fire, Lord Vane's treason, and the Grand Duke's departure into the blizzard had spread through the castle corridors. When Grim dismounted, a collective breath caught in the throat of every onlooker. For three years, the Grand Duke had walked with a subtle limp, his breath ragged and his skin unnaturally pale from the Black Vein Curse. Today, he moved with the fluid grace of an apex predator. His jawline was clear of dark veins, his eyes glowing with steady p

The dark purple mist coiled in the freezing air like a serpent, emitting a high-pitched humming sound. From the glowing center of the magic circle, a translucent silhouette materialized. It was Sir Cedric, Saintess Ariel's chief knight commander, his face contorted in an arrogant sneer."Grand Duke Cavendish," Cedric's projected voice echoed across the basin, metallic and distorted. "If you hear this message, my mercenaries failed. But Saintess Ariel foresaw your arrival. The mercenary carrying this mark was injected with a blood corruption curse."Before Grim could react, the dark mist surged forward, diving straight toward the Starlight Lilies in Elodie's hands."Elodie, drop them!" Grim shouted.Instead of dropping the flowers, Elodie pulled the lilies against her chest and rolled across the hard snow. She reached into her pocket, retrieving a silver vial of salt and crushed elderberry extract she had prepared in the archives.Uncorking the vial with her teeth, Elodie hurled the si

The strike hit with brutal precision, throwing the attacker backward into the deep snow and snuffing out his torch.Elodie reined in her mount near a cluster of glowing white Starlight Lilies. She raised her bronze crossbow with steady hands, sighting a mercenary who was raising a heavy flask of pitch toward a patch of unburned flowers. She pulled the trigger. The heavy steel bolt whistled through the howling wind, striking the flask directly. Clay shattered instantly, spilling pitch onto the snow away from delicate petals."Duchess, behind you!"
