Chapter 9: Breaking the Cursesmith Seal

The dark purple mist coiled in the freezing air like a serpent, emitting a high-pitched humming sound.

From the glowing center of the magic circle, a translucent silhouette materialized. It was Sir Cedric, Saintess Ariel's chief knight commander, his face contorted in an arrogant sneer.

"Grand Duke Cavendish," Cedric's projected voice echoed across the basin, metallic and distorted. "If you hear this message, my mercenaries failed. But Saintess Ariel foresaw your arrival. The mercenary carrying this mark was injected with a blood corruption curse."

Before Grim could react, the dark mist surged forward, diving straight toward the Starlight Lilies in Elodie's hands.

"Elodie, drop them!" Grim shouted.

Instead of dropping the flowers, Elodie pulled the lilies against her chest and rolled across the hard snow. She reached into her pocket, retrieving a silver vial of salt and crushed elderberry extract she had prepared in the archives.

Uncorking the vial with her teeth, Elodie hurled the silver liquid into the center of the purple fog.

A sharp sizzling noise erupted. Bright golden light flared as the spectral projection shrieked in sudden agony. The purple mist dissolved into thin steam, dissipating into the wind.

"Impossible!" Cedric gasped, flickering violently. "How could a capital noblewoman neutralize a cursesmith seal?"

"Because your dark magic relies on cheap capital alchemy," Elodie said coolly, standing up from the snow and dusting off her silver cloak. "And you used an outdated elderberry base. Tell Saintess Ariel she needs better tutors."

With a swift wave of her hand, Elodie threw a second pinch of purification salt, shattering the circle into sparks.

Silence returned to the frost basin.

Grim stood frozen, his dark blade lowered, his ice-blue eyes fixed on Elodie with shock, relief, and desire. He moved across the snow in long strides, closing the distance between them.

He grabbed her shoulders, pulling her against his chest so hard her breath caught.

"Are you insane?" Grim growled, his voice trembling with rare emotion. "You risked taking a corruption strike just to protect those flowers!"

"If those flowers were corrupted, your cure would be destroyed," Elodie replied softly. Her gloved fingers rested against his jawline, feeling the pulse beneath his skin. "I told you, Grim. I am not going to let you die."

Grim stared at her, his eyes burning with intensity. He slid his bare hand up to the back of her head, his fingers tangling in her hair, pulling her face closer until their breaths mingled.

"I spent my life surrounded by people who wished for my death," Grim murmured, his voice thick with devotion. "Yet you throw yourself into dark magic traps to keep my heart beating."

"I do it because your life belongs to me now," Elodie whispered back, her gaze lingering on his lips. "And I protect what is mine."

A low rumble vibrated deep in Grim's chest. He leaned down and pressed his lips firmly against hers, claiming her mouth in a deep kiss that shattered the icy silence.

The kiss was fierce and demanding. Elodie melted into his embrace, her arms wrapping around his neck as the heat of his body enveloped her completely. Every trace of the blizzard faded, leaving only the thunder of their hearts.

When Grim pulled back a fraction of an inch, his eyes were glowing with violet light, the dark veins on his neck receding as his mana responded to her presence.

"When we return to the fortress," Grim whispered against her cheek, "I am doubling your personal guard, Duchess."

"Only if you promise to be my head guard," Elodie teased gently.

Commander Waylon stepped forward, clearing his throat. "Your Grace, the remaining mercenaries are secured in iron chains. The vanguard established a perimeter around the flower beds."

Grim reluctantly released Elodie's waist, though his bare hand remained entwined with her fingers.

"Set up a mobile alchemy tent immediately," Grim commanded Waylon. "The Duchess will prepare the first elixir before we ride back."

Within thirty minutes, a heavy leather tent was pitched over an iron stove in the center of the valley.

Elodie sat at a wooden table, surrounded by silver pestles and the glowing petals of the Starlight Lily. Grim stood behind her chair, his hand resting protectively on her shoulder as she crushed the glowing petals into a fine silver liquid.

"This first elixir will not cure the curse entirely," Elodie explained, pouring the shimmering liquid into a glass vial. "It will act as a stabilizing agent, freezing the mana glass in your bloodstream so your core stops decaying."

She turned in her seat, holding up the finished silver potion toward him.

Grim took the vial from her hand. Without a moment of hesitation, he drank the elixir in a single swallow.

A surge of brilliant silver light radiated through Grim's torso. The black veins along his neck turned pale grey, then dissolved completely beneath his skin. The ragged, painful wheeze in his lungs vanished, replaced by smooth breathing.

Grim looked down at his bare hands, flexing his fingers as pure mana flowed effortlessly through his veins.

"The pain is gone," Grim murmured, staring at her in wonder.

Elodie smiled triumphantly. "That is stage one. Stage two requires the royal seal from the imperial palace."

Grim reached out, cupping her cheeks in his large hands. "Then we take stage two together, my brilliant wife."

The capital villa of House Cavendish stood tucked away in the northern quarter, built from white marble and ironwood. Inside the master suite, soft lamplight flickered against silk draperies. Elodie stood before an oval mirror, smoothing the waist of a gown crafted from dark navy velvet and mithril thread. The fabric shimmered like stars, its collar lined with silver scales functioning as armor. Grim stood behind her, adjusting the silver clasp of his cloak. In the mirror's reflection, his ice-blue eyes met hers with unshielded intensity. His tall frame dwarfed hers, yet his posture held a quiet reverence that made her heart flutter. "You look like an empress preparing for war," Grim murmured, his voice a low rumble through the room. "I am a duchess preparing to dismantle a prince," Elodie corrected with a small smile, turning to face him. "How do I look?" Grim stepped closer until his boots brushed her silver hem. He reached out with calloused fingers, adjusting a stray pin

Standing at the top of the marble staircase were Count Thomas Youngblood and Countess Marianne, Elodie's father and stepmother. Beside them stood her half-sister, Chloe, wearing a dress of pink silk. When the carriage door swung open, Count Thomas stepped forward with a wide, artificial smile."Elodie, my dear daughter!" Thomas called out with false warmth. "We heard rumors that you survived the northern winter. Come inside! Your family has missed you dearly."Elodie stepped onto the marble pavement, her midnight-blue velvet cloak rustling around her ankles. She did not return her father's smile. Her dark eyes remained unreadable as she looked up at the people who had treated her as a disposable tool for twenty years.Grim dismounted

Elodie sat on the bench, spreading parchment ledgers across a table. Her dark velvet cloak rested over her shoulders, its silver embroidery catching the firelight.Across from her sat Grim. Wearing a black silk shirt and trousers, his imposing frame filled the cabin. His ice-blue eyes tracked her fingers as she organized documents detailing Crown Prince Jamie's secret debts."You have been scanning those numbers since we crossed the border three hours ago, Elodie," Grim said softly, his voice vibrating through the space."These numbers are our sharpest weapons, Husband," Elodie replied, her quill dipping into ink. "Prince Jamie borrowed two million gold sovereigns from underground syndicates to fund his private knights. When I present these notes to the Imperial Senate at the Winter Gala, his standi
