LOGINRIVA POV:
“What watch?”
Several things happened simultaneously.
First, the front door opened and two cops walked inside. They looked between us before their eyes settled on Ethaniel. The slight nod and look of inquisition had me on edge.
Ethaniel pointed towards my purse. “It’s inside her purse.”
Next thing I knew, the cops closed in on me from both sides, cutting off any route of escape, and pushed me up against the wall. I was turned around, my chest pressed flush, making it difficult to breathe.
“Hey! I didn’t do anything!” I protested.
Yet, I didn’t struggle, knowing it would lead to worse consequences. “I don’t know what watch he is talking about.”
They read me my rights as one of them snatched my purse and rifled through the contents. The cop pulled a men’s watch out of my bag, and my eyes widened in horror.
‘How did that get in here?’
I turned to Ethaniel in shock. His cold eyes had smugness hidden underneath the surface.
‘He put it in there. But why?’
How?
The only way it could have gotten in there was if he had planted it while I slept. Or, he had woken up while I was in the shower, found the note and decided to get back at me without delay for the presumed slight.
“I didn’t put it in there!” I yelled as I was dragged out of the apartment.
The next couple of hours were a routine nightmare. I was identified and fingerprinted. The underhanded jokes and looks I received were disgusting and I could barely hide it. I was being accused of targeting wealthy men and seducing them so that I could steal from them later. Just the thought of it made my skin crawl.
I could handle the gossip, but I could only think about my Dad, whom I had promised to call in the morning. I dreaded making the phone call. He would expect it to be mundane, but instead, he would find out I had been arrested for theft. I could imagine the disappointment in his voice and then his insistence to fly over and bail me out.
What could he possibly do to make things right this time around?
He would never trust me again.
I had requested for a lawyer and declined to make any statement until one arrived. Opening my mouth in front of cops who only wanted to close the case quickly was asking for trouble.
But the officers lurked around, trying to test my boundaries and pry my mouth open for some incriminating evidence.
The door slammed against the wall and I winced. A well-dressed man entered, his eyes scanning the room before falling on me.
“Sir, you are not allowed in here—”
“I am the accused’s lawyer, Simon Havelland. I’m here to speak to my client.” He smiled broadly, showing off his impeccable white teeth.
‘Where does he get them cleaned? They look brighter than my future.’
He looked like a shapeshifter pretending to be human. It was unsettling, to say the least.
‘This can’t be happening to me.’
The events that happened since last night were right out of a movie script. And it all happened due to questionable choices that I had made.
I had to stand up and take responsibility for my mistakes. But I wouldn’t go down for something I had not done. I sat taller.
“You don’t look like the state appointed lawyer,” I questioned suspiciously.
Public defence lawyers rarely dressed in custom tailored suits. They had long hours and meagre pay… They couldn’t afford such luxuries.
Mr. Havelland scoffed. “I like you, young lady. You have a sense of humor.”
I arched my brow. “That was an observation. Not a joke,” I corrected. He definitely didn’t act human…
“You’re right, I am not a state appointed lawyer. Mr. Ryves hired me.”
My mouth hung open in shock. “Ethaniel Ryves? This has to be a joke!”
I turned my shocked gaze to the cop. He seemed just as surprised, but still bored. His job had made him immune to the weird. This was probably on the lower end of the bar for the insane stuff he had seen.
“Look, you have it all wrong. Mr. Ryves accused me of—”
“A mere lover’s quarrel,” he interrupted. “Mr. Ryves is hot-tempered. But this is not something that can’t be settled in private…” he trailed off.
Mr. Havelland produced a series of documents and handed it to the cop.
I was in a tale worse than the Grimm’s tales I loved as a child. I had walked into the trap of a seasoned predator but I didn’t know what my end would be. Now that I was living a nightmarish fairytale, they no longer sounded funny. I waited to wake up from this terrible dream.
If only I had never met Ethaniel Ryves.
“Wait. I want to see those documents!” I exclaimed. I grabbed the pile before any of them could protest. I wasn’t going to let them drag me down any longer.
After reading a few lines, I gasped. “This is crazy. Are you for real?” I looked helplessly at the cop. “Engaged? We are not engaged!”
The cop finally stepped in. “The process might not be pleasant but this is not the first time a lover’s spat has ended in an accusation of this kind.” He eyed me cautiously. “It is also not the first time someone has disowned their lover over such a fight.”
Mr. Havelland smiled victoriously. “Exactly. Mr. Ryves is extremely sorry to have troubled you. But he is willing to settle this matter privately with his fiancé.” Mr. Havelland couldn’t wait to put an end to all speculation. He emphasized on the last word to send a clear message to me.
I couldn’t miss the warning look in his eyes even if I turned blind.
“You are crazy. Ethaniel is crazy. I can’t stand this anymore.” I turned to the cop, determined. “I am willing to make a statement without a lawyer present. I will tell my side as it happened. And Mr. Havelland can take his deceitful settlement papers and shove it—”
RIVA POV:Damn it!“You have to let the doctors do their thing and wait,” Ethaniel told me softly. I looked at him with displeasure.“They can’t even answer any of the questions properly,” I protested.I could see the distress and dissatisfaction in his eyes as well, but he didn’t voice them like I did. “They are the best doctors in the city.”‘But not good enough to know what is wrong with Snow!’I kept my mouth shut. If I was feeling this upset, Ethaniel must have felt it a hundred times worse. He kept his head down as the doctors left them out in the waiting room. I turned to him when I felt him shift beside me.I froze when I noticed him crying.I hadn’t seen him in a moment of vulnerability. He had been out of control in the office, but that was panic. This was utter defeat in knowing he was powerless to help his daughter. My instincts kicked in. I took his hand in mine and placed it on my lap. I ran circles over the back of his hand as I spoke, “She is going to be okay, Ethaniel
RIVA POV:“Is she alright?” I jumped out of my seat. The purse was already slung over my shoulder and I was ready to head out.“I don’t know,” he whispered helplessly as he rushed into the room to look for something.“Ethaniel, snap out of it!” I hissed.Proximity makes one lose sight of what was important. His daughter was in an accident and the usually cool man had lost his wits. My heart thrashed against my ribcage, but I knew to keep my cool.“Where is my phone?” Ethaniel hissed, ignoring me.“It’s in your pocket, Ethaniel,” I reminded. I could see its outline in his pocket. “ETHANIEL!” I yelled, snapping him out. He whipped around to look at me. “It’s in your pocket,” I said softly. The air rushed out of his lungs. He pulled it out and nodded. “Jax is waiting downstairs. You can go home alone,” he said sternly. My brows furrowed in confusion. “I am coming with you,” I replied. He walked past me to the door before stopping. “You’re coming?”I gave him a blank look, wondering how h
RIVA POV:If these were the incriminating photos I was looking for, it showed no resemblance between me and that person. The only thing I could ascertain was his love for honey blonde hair. The other woman was an angelic beauty, fragile and stoic.I was the girl-next-door type. With a criminal background, no less. But what really struck me about the photos was that they didn’t include Snow at all. And they dated back to seven or eight years ago. So… Just before Snow was born. But the woman in the pictures didn’t appear to be pregnant.I dismissed the photographs as those of an ordinary ex-girlfriend in the end.I was snapped out of my daydreams by Jax, who announced that it was time for me to leave for Ethaniel’s office. Jax didn’t like me much. He appeared calm and soft-mannered on the surface, but he watched me with suspicion. At least he was fiercely protective of Snow and Ethaniel. Sometimes, I wondered if he was gay and maybe saw me as a potential threat. But that had to be my o
RIVA POV:I had barely started to celebrate the fact that I got the last word when I heard a knock on the door. It startled me out of my thoughts. I stared at the door for a second before trudging to the door and opening it a crack. I had to be careful.Ethaniel was standing on the other side with his shoulders relaxed. The tension in his shoulders from a few moments ago had dissipated.“Can I help you?” I asked cautiously.“You left me out there without waiting for my response,” he whined, but his tone wasn’t too reluctant.‘Bro, you asked me a question and I answered it. What else would you say? That you are overjoyed that I said yes?’I doubted he felt that strongly.“Are you swept off your feet as much as I was by your proposal, then?” I asked him pointedly. He smiled. “You are not as charismatic as I am, so I wasn’t particularly disoriented by your charm, but I am happy.” He paused. “I began that conversation aggressively because I was convinced you would reject me if you were gi
RIVA POV:I was intrigued and wanted to ask, but with Snow there, I knew better than to push for answers. If there was one strict rule Ethaniel enforced, it was the condition regarding Snow. He didn’t want her exposed to any disagreements or fights. It was particularly effective as Ethaniel and I didn’t have a natural relationship. So, it was difficult to diffuse the tension when there was no love between us and we rarely saw eye to eye on things.Part of me thought it was to protect his precious image in her mind, another wondered if he was trying to make me appear softer and more agreeable. If he was sending Snow away, it meant something big was coming. When we were left alone, Ethaniel didn’t beat around the bush. “How are you adjusting to this… new lifestyle?”I could tell from his expression that he was genuinely curious about my answer. And if I hadn’t known better, I would think he was nervous. It was ironic as only a few hours ago, I would have responded to his question witho
RIVA POV:Marco wasn’t the kind to be scared off easily. But he was easy to anger. He seemed like the kind of person who would grow more aggressive when he had a setback. I had half-expected him to sneak in to get revenge, but it never happened.Despite nothing bad happening, I found myself more dissatisfied. I needed time to myself… to think about what I wanted to do with my life. The job had been a means to make ends meet, and I forgot I had dreams before that… things I wanted to pursue. Now, I had the leisure to think about my next steps, but I didn’t want to live off Ethaniel. If I quit my job and pursued writing full-time, I would be submitting myself to Ethaniel’s wishes. It would give his scheme legitimacy. I had started out as a victim in his schemes, but if I left my job and made the best of the situation, the tables would turn. I would be the one benefiting from the situation, and no longer the victim trapped by him.At least the world would think so.Everything I wrote in
