Chapter 1

Irene Anderson was momentarily stunned before she immediately looked annoyed.

“Why are you here over a stupid birthday? This isn’t the right place for your tantrum!”

“I’m saying that I want to divorce you,” I repeated.

Once she realized that I was not joking, her expression slowly froze. No one at the memorial dared to move. The next second, Irene tugged Zac Reid behind her back and forcefully flung my wedding ring away.

She looked as though she understood everything.

“Are you using the ring to declare your identity?

“I’m only calling Zac that for his dead mother’s sake. Are you really going to be jealous over this?”

She always said we had to respect the dead.

Every year on my birthday, I did not receive any sunflowers, which were my favorite flowers. Instead, there were a lot of white chrysanthemums. There was not a cake that I would like to eat. Instead, there were fruit baskets meant for the memorial.

She never wished me a happy birthday; she would not even grace me with a smile on that day.

Every time my mother called to wish me a happy birthday, I had to hide in the washroom to answer her call, as if celebrating my own birthday were a crime!

Irene had never thought that I was not obliged to participate in Mary Reid’s memorial at all.

I gaped, but no voice came out.

When Irene noticed that I was silent, she softened her tone and passed me a few stalks of chrysanthemums.

“It’s good that you’ve learned from your mistakes. I’ll find time to celebrate your birthday. Since you’re here, you should pay some respect to Mary. She treated you very well when she was alive.”

Everyone knew that Mary had hated me and had wanted to shun me.

Irene knew that too. Mary had once made me a bowl of poisoned chicken soup, saying that she was concerned about my health. I had ended up in the hospital.

She had done that so Zac would be able to spend some alone time with Irene.

I suddenly sneered and tossed the flowers onto the ground.

Everyone gasped.

Irene stared at the scattered flowers and lost her patience completely.

“That’s enough, Theo!”

She kicked forcefully, and one of the candles toppled over and fell onto my leg. A blister appeared almost immediately. I bent down in pain as cold sweat appeared on my forehead.

Irene’s breathing hitched, but the hatred in her eyes was still there.

“Zac has just joined the company, and he doesn’t know much. You should guide him. If you can’t do that, you can leave the company.”

Her gaze fell onto the work card that I cherished as she threatened me.

I pursed my lips and pretended to be nonchalant. “Alright.”

A hint of shock flashed in Irene’s eyes. Then, she was called over by Zac to resume the memorial. I looked at how close Zac and Irene were, and I understood everything.

I walked out of the cemetery and called someone that I had not called in a long while.

“Prepare a divorce agreement for me.”

“What are you doing here?” I did not hide the disgust in my eyes. Irene was stunned. She took a step back and hung her head. “I… I heard from the bodyguards that you were around here. I’m really worried about you, so I rushed over. Theo, were you burnt?”She tried to reach out to me, but I dodged her attempt. “Don’t touch me.”Irene was stunned by that small action. “Do you really hate me that much? Theo, I know I didn’t spend enough time with you in the past, and I cared too much about Zac. You might feel that it’s unfair. But it’s not the same anymore. I already found out who Zac truly is. I can no longer view him as a younger brother.” Younger brother? Irene had been using that as an excuse for the past five years. Zac could enter our bedroom naked, and when she was showering, Zac would enter the bathroom without any boundaries. She had called me narrow-minded. “I only view him as a younger brother. Can you stop getting jealous?”But as a man, I clearly knew what sh

My heart was thumping furiously after I jumped out of the window of the burning hospital ward. I had promised my father that I would try my best to protect my mother. However, not only had I not managed to protect my mother, but I had also not managed to protect my father’s grave. I turned back and looked at the fire. At least, this fire would reveal the truth about Zac. The hospital fire was sensational news online. All colleagues were attacking Zac for freezing the account on purpose. [How can we keep such a vicious man in our company? This is ruining our company’s reputation!][He looks so kind, but he’s actually so vicious. Mr. Smith’s mother treated him so well when she was alive. How could he do that?] [I didn’t expect him to act so wildly! Ms. Anderson treated him as her good friend, and he misused her authority! He still has to pay for it in the end.]When I called the hospital to retrieve the ashes, they informed me that Irene had taken my mother’s urn. She had bur

“What?”Irene wanted to ask for more information, but the nurse had already hung up on her. She could no longer lie to herself anymore. She stumbled out of the dining hall. “Irene!” Irene rushed to the hospital and realized that my mother’s hospital ward was indeed on fire. When she tried to rush in, the security guards stopped her. “It’s dangerous inside. Please calm down.”“My husband is inside! How can I calm down?” Irene had never felt this terrified before. At the same time, one of the medical staff came out with a female body. “Ms. Anderson, we’ve examined it. This is your husband’s mother.”Irene widened her eyes in shock as she did not know what to say or do. “Did she die… from the fire?”The nurse shook her head. “No, she died before the fire even started. What a poor thing; she didn’t have enough money in her bank account, so she could not be saved. We’re also puzzled. How is it possible that Mr. Smith didn’t have enough money…” The nurse did not say anyth

Irene suddenly sprang up from her seat. “What did you say? A fire?”Her assistant, John Dunne, quickly showed her the video. “Look at the position of the fire; it’s really his mother’s hospital ward. This video is going viral online!”Irene frowned and then sneered. “If it really was on fire, then he would’ve called me! But he has yet to reply to my messages! It seems like his temper is getting worse. He also has yet to apologize onto me; he’s turned into an ungrateful man. Is his current plan trying to fool me with a fake video?”John was a little dumbfounded. However, as he read the comments by the people online, he still could not help but say, “Ms. Anderson, this doesn’t seem fake. How about I go over to have a look? Maybe Mr. Smith is running into some problems.” Irene immediately shot John a dirty look. “If you fetch him back, I bet he’ll act even more outrageously in the future. Let’s forget about it. I’ll see what to do later.” Even though she said that, she was

I was shocked. Irene had always topped up the bank card. How was it possible that it was no longer working?I called the company’s finance colleague with trembling hands. The colleague stuttered, “Mr. Smith, Ms. Anderson has already passed your bank cards to Mr. Reid. She said she’ll recover the cards once you’ve learned your lessons.” My phone slipped from my hand. I no longer had time to look into it. I quickly went to the office to see Zac. I was shaking violently. “Give me the bank card; I need it to save my mother’s life!” Irene rushed out of her office and pushed me aside forcefully. “You’re scaring him!” I almost lost my voice. “My mother’s in a critical condition, and I desperately need money now…”“That’s enough, Theo! Why are you using your mother as an excuse to scam money out of me? She’s living her best life in the hospital; what could possibly happen to her?”She paused and then nodded in realization. “Don’t think I don’t know that you only want money so yo

The next day, Irene chose a good time to bring Zac to the cemetery to proceed with the move. When I arrived, everyone was looking at me. “Not only is he not able to celebrate his birthday, but he can’t even protect his father’s grave. What an embarrassment of a man!” “Zac is very close with Ms. Anderson in the office. She would give him whatever he wants. We all feel that they’re a match made in heaven!”“Looking at the situation now, I bet Ms. Anderson is going to get a new husband soon.”I could not help but clench my fist. I watched as my father’s grave was being emptied. Zac looked at me smugly and said sarcastically, “Theo, I simply mentioned that I wanted this plot. I didn’t expect Irene to take it seriously! You’re not mad, are you?”He looked kind on the surface, but he was pinching my arm in secret. I let go of my hand in pain. Then, I stared intently at the workers digging my father’s grave. I was afraid that they would inflict damage. When I saw my father’s urn

Indeed, Irene did not return home for the entire night. She was usually not active on social media, but she kept posting long essays about Mary’s memorial. Zac commented underneath each of her posts. [Irene, thank you for spending the whole night talking to me. My mother would have been very h
