Ava Martinez

~•~

I was reluctant to listen when my papa asked me to return home for Thanksgiving weekend. It was my first year of med school and I didn’t want any distractions.

Papa didn’t take no for an answer, so I had no option but to fly back to Spain to spend the weekend with my family. Little did I know that everything was about to change.

I was upstairs studying when my mama yelled at me to join them in the living room. They were watching a movie together. My papa always made sure he spent quality time with the family whenever he was around.

His job made him move around a lot and he made sure to use the time he had with the family effectively. I let out a subtle sigh and closed my books.

I didn’t have a good relationship with my parents while growing up, so I always tried isolating myself from them. The only adult I was comfortable around was my Abuelita.

It was a lazy day for me and I hadn’t done anything throughout the morning, so I stayed back to brush my teeth before going downstairs to join them.

As I walked down the corridor, I heard a loud noise coming from the gate. I paused at first because it sounded like a gunshot.

The TV in the living room was still playing but my family who were laughing and chatting before had become silent. The only thing I could think of doing was to run downstairs to see if they were okay.

Just as I was at the edge of the stairs, I heard another gunshot. But this time, it was inside the living room. I froze and took a step back.

I clutched my heart in shock as I peeped into the living room to see my mama’s lifeless body lying on the sofa. Hot tears poured down my cheeks as I realized what was happening.

My mama didn’t deserve to die. Yes, we had our bad days but I wouldn’t wish death on anyone. Why didn’t my papa try to fight them and protect mama?

The next thing I knew, another shot was fired at my papa and I gasped in disbelief. I couldn’t see who the shooter was and I had no idea why they would kill my parents.

I wanted to scream. I wanted to run downstairs to stop them. But I didn’t have the courage, I was still in shock. It felt like I was in a nightmare and I wanted to wake up.

I watched as my parents got murdered. I thought they were going to leave my siblings but my heart broke when I heard two more gunshots.

After a few seconds, I heard footsteps walking towards the front door. I couldn’t stay back, I tiptoed downstairs to the living room but ran back when I heard the shooter's voice.

“Stop or I’ll shoot you too!” One of them commanded and I froze. I turned around slowly to look at him. I wanted to see the face of the person who murdered my whole family in less than five minutes.

My heart skipped a beat when I saw who it was. “Please, don’t kill me!” I pleaded. I recognized him. He was Ruiz Giovanni. I had seen him on several occasions and I had heard a lot of rumors about him.

But from what I just witnessed, they weren’t rumors. Everything they said about him was true. He moved closer to me and stared at me for a few seconds.

“Kill her and let’s get out of here.” The other guy suggested but Ruiz shook his head and lowered his gun. I recognized the other guy too, he was Lorenzo.

My papa had tried his best to keep me and my siblings away from the mafia world. He wanted to protect us from his dark underworld.

But as I grew older, my curiosity got the best of me. I began to snoop around and found things I wasn’t meant to know. My papa had no idea that I knew he was part of the mafia.

I remembered seeing Ruiz and Lorenzo at business meetings with my papa and I knew they were rivals. But I also knew they had formed a truce which made it more confusing as to why he would murder my family.

“What is your name?” Ruiz asked as his eyes raked over me from my head to toe. I was shaking and I couldn’t respond. What did he even want with my name after he just killed my whole family?

“If you won’t do it, I will,” Lorenzo said impatiently and brought out his gun but Ruiz stopped him. “Ruiz, what are you doing?” Lorenzo asked, his voice filled with frustration.

Ruiz grabbed me by my hands and walked down the stairs while Lorenzo trailed behind us. My heart sank at the sight of my family's lifeless body in the pool of their blood.

“Leave me the fuck alone!” I yanked my hands from Ruiz’s hand when I realized he was taking me to the front door. “You monster! You killed my family? Why did you kill them?”

I still believed it was just a nightmare and I was going to wake up soon. This couldn’t be happening. It couldn’t be!

“Watch your tone, young lady,” Lorenzo warned but I didn’t flinch. I fell to the ground and tears streamed down my face as though it was a waterfall.

My papa always made sure the security at the house was really tight, so how did they get inside? My mind was racing with different thoughts and questions.

I crawled to the sofa where my parents lay in their pool of blood. I tapped on their body several times to wake them up but they were really gone.

When I started pinching myself so I would wake up from the terrible nightmare, Ruiz finally spoke. “I’m sorry about your family, but your father deserved it.”

My father deserved what? To die? There wasn’t even an ounce of remorse in his words. “You’re a monster and you will pay for this?” I said in between sobs.

He walked closer to me and took my hands but I jerked away from him. “You’re coming with me.” He said and I twisted my head in confusion. “It’s either that join them.” He said in a husky voice as he pointed to my dead family.

His threat didn’t mean anything to me. What was the use of living anymore if my entire family was gone? I was as good as dead.

“I would rather die than go with you,” I replied in a grave tone. Ruiz and Lorenzo exchanged disbelieving glances but I stood firm, my eyes flashing with determination.

Chapter 77 Ava Martinez ~•~ I had already decided to leave for good. I had already taken my time to think about everything. It didn’t make sense for me to keep on doing the same thing that made my family shut me out. I even told Bonnie that I was ready to leave. But everything changed after I heard that Carla wasn’t actually pregnant. I felt so relieved and it was as though a heavy weight had been lifted off my chest. Maria was the one who broke the news to me and I couldn’t stop smiling. Carla, on the other hand, hastily left the house after Ruiz confronted her. So for the past month that she had been staying in the house, she was lying to everyone. She was so good at pretending like she was pregnant. It was a good thing that they finally caught her lie. Now, one of my problems has been solved. I just needed to find a way to convince my family to accept Ruiz. I tried calling them a few more times but they didn’t respond. I didn’t want to lie to them

Chapter 76 Ruiz Giovanni ~•~ “I have something to tell you.” Maria stopped me when I was on my way downstairs. “I’m in a hurry, can we talk about it later?” I asked but Maria shook her head firmly. “This better be good, spill,” I said, glancing at my watch. I couldn’t get any sleep the previous night because I kept thinking about what Lorenzo had done. I decided I couldn’t live like that anymore and was on my way to confront him. “Carla isn’t pregnant.” “What?” I asked, my voice tinged with shock. “What do you mean?” My expression turned serious. I hope Maria wasn’t playing games with me. “I overheard her conversation one day, she was talking to her friend but she had no idea I was there.” Maria continued. “She just lied about being pregnant to stay in your life?” I let out a scoff. “What about the baby bump and the pregnancy test?” I couldn’t help but ask because Carla’s stomach was protruding. Maria brushed off my concerns with a dismissive wave. “The b

Chapter 75 Ruiz Giovanni ~•~ In the space of two months, so many things had happened in my life. I finally emerged as the Don of the Spanish Mafia Group. But I couldn’t do it without the help of my Uncle Raffael. My relationship with Ava was also strained because somehow, Carla claimed that she was pregnant with my child. I knew I was always careful even if I barely used protection while fucking her, but she was certain that I was responsible for her pregnancy. That was even the least of my problems. Being the Don of the Spanish Mafia gave me access to certain information. Since everyone now answered to me, they wanted to be in my good books, so they always provided me with any information I needed. I had finally gotten information on my brother’s killer. Chapter 74 Ava Martinez ~•~ TWO MONTHS LATER “So my family isn’t speaking to me anymore and Carla is pregnant with Ruiz’s baby.” Bonnie gasped in disbelief as she heard those words leave my mouth. I had the same expression when I found out about it too. “Wow, you weren’t joking when you said things had gotten so complicated.” She said, her voice filled with sympathy. “So what are you going to do?” What could I do? My family wasn’t speaking to me because they found out about my relationship with Ruiz. They found it offensive that I was with someone who took our parents away from us. I tried my best to make them see my reasons but they weren’t having it. Whenever I tried to call or visit, they always ignored me. I felt so terrible and was confused about what to do. The same person that made my family shut me out was about to be a father. The crazy part was that I wasn’t the one having the child. I wasn’t ready to have a child for anybody but it was em

Chapter 73 Ruiz Giovanni ~•~ My father snorted. “The only family you have here is Rafael.” I held back a scoff, it wasn’t the first time he was saying something like that. Papa and I had a strained relationship ever since he realized I was following Raffael’s footsteps. He always blamed Raffael for everything that happened. Including my brother’s death. I still hadn’t forgotten about Marco and I was getting closer to finding his killer. Ever since Marco died, my Papa stopped talking to me completely. He didn’t even want me close to his house. ‘Everyone around you will eventually end up dead.’ His harsh words replayed in my head. I also didn’t want to be around the house because I was preventing the rival gangs from knowing where my family lives. But somehow, they still managed to find out the location. “He’s about to have a lot more,” Rafael responded before I could even utter a word. My papa glared at Rafael. “What do you mean?” I let out a deep breath b

Chapter 72 Ruiz Giovanni ~•~ I woke up and saw that I had missed a couple of calls from my mama and sisters. I had slept for longer than I intended to. Pushing aside the duvet, I climbed out of the bed and made my way to the bathroom. After a couple of minutes, I was done getting dressed and ready to leave. I grabbed my keys from the table and headed downstairs. “Are you going out?” Maria asked me when I got to the living room. “Isn’t your injury hurting you? Don’t you need to rest?” I knew her questions were from a place of genuine concern but I wasn’t in the mood to answer all her questions. “I’m fine.” I lied. My injuries were still hurting but I could manage. Plus, I didn’t want her to worry about me or try to convince me to stay at home. “Is Lorenzo awake now?” I asked with a sense of urgency as I glanced at my watch. Without waiting for a response from Maria, I walked over to the room. A small smile was plastered across Lorenzo’s face as he saw m
