Ava Martinez
~•~ I was reluctant to listen when my papa asked me to return home for Thanksgiving weekend. It was my first year of med school and I didn’t want any distractions. Papa didn’t take no for an answer, so I had no option but to fly back to Spain to spend the weekend with my family. Little did I know that everything was about to change. I was upstairs studying when my mama yelled at me to join them in the living room. They were watching a movie together. My papa always made sure he spent quality time with the family whenever he was around. His job made him move around a lot and he made sure to use the time he had with the family effectively. I let out a subtle sigh and closed my books. I didn’t have a good relationship with my parents while growing up, so I always tried isolating myself from them. The only adult I was comfortable around was my Abuelita. It was a lazy day for me and I hadn’t done anything throughout the morning, so I stayed back to brush my teeth before going downstairs to join them. As I walked down the corridor, I heard a loud noise coming from the gate. I paused at first because it sounded like a gunshot. The TV in the living room was still playing but my family who were laughing and chatting before had become silent. The only thing I could think of doing was to run downstairs to see if they were okay. Just as I was at the edge of the stairs, I heard another gunshot. But this time, it was inside the living room. I froze and took a step back. I clutched my heart in shock as I peeped into the living room to see my mama’s lifeless body lying on the sofa. Hot tears poured down my cheeks as I realized what was happening. My mama didn’t deserve to die. Yes, we had our bad days but I wouldn’t wish death on anyone. Why didn’t my papa try to fight them and protect mama? The next thing I knew, another shot was fired at my papa and I gasped in disbelief. I couldn’t see who the shooter was and I had no idea why they would kill my parents. I wanted to scream. I wanted to run downstairs to stop them. But I didn’t have the courage, I was still in shock. It felt like I was in a nightmare and I wanted to wake up. I watched as my parents got murdered. I thought they were going to leave my siblings but my heart broke when I heard two more gunshots. After a few seconds, I heard footsteps walking towards the front door. I couldn’t stay back, I tiptoed downstairs to the living room but ran back when I heard the shooter's voice. “Stop or I’ll shoot you too!” One of them commanded and I froze. I turned around slowly to look at him. I wanted to see the face of the person who murdered my whole family in less than five minutes. My heart skipped a beat when I saw who it was. “Please, don’t kill me!” I pleaded. I recognized him. He was Ruiz Giovanni. I had seen him on several occasions and I had heard a lot of rumors about him. But from what I just witnessed, they weren’t rumors. Everything they said about him was true. He moved closer to me and stared at me for a few seconds. “Kill her and let’s get out of here.” The other guy suggested but Ruiz shook his head and lowered his gun. I recognized the other guy too, he was Lorenzo. My papa had tried his best to keep me and my siblings away from the mafia world. He wanted to protect us from his dark underworld. But as I grew older, my curiosity got the best of me. I began to snoop around and found things I wasn’t meant to know. My papa had no idea that I knew he was part of the mafia. I remembered seeing Ruiz and Lorenzo at business meetings with my papa and I knew they were rivals. But I also knew they had formed a truce which made it more confusing as to why he would murder my family. “What is your name?” Ruiz asked as his eyes raked over me from my head to toe. I was shaking and I couldn’t respond. What did he even want with my name after he just killed my whole family? “If you won’t do it, I will,” Lorenzo said impatiently and brought out his gun but Ruiz stopped him. “Ruiz, what are you doing?” Lorenzo asked, his voice filled with frustration. Ruiz grabbed me by my hands and walked down the stairs while Lorenzo trailed behind us. My heart sank at the sight of my family's lifeless body in the pool of their blood. “Leave me the fuck alone!” I yanked my hands from Ruiz’s hand when I realized he was taking me to the front door. “You monster! You killed my family? Why did you kill them?” I still believed it was just a nightmare and I was going to wake up soon. This couldn’t be happening. It couldn’t be! “Watch your tone, young lady,” Lorenzo warned but I didn’t flinch. I fell to the ground and tears streamed down my face as though it was a waterfall. My papa always made sure the security at the house was really tight, so how did they get inside? My mind was racing with different thoughts and questions. I crawled to the sofa where my parents lay in their pool of blood. I tapped on their body several times to wake them up but they were really gone. When I started pinching myself so I would wake up from the terrible nightmare, Ruiz finally spoke. “I’m sorry about your family, but your father deserved it.” My father deserved what? To die? There wasn’t even an ounce of remorse in his words. “You’re a monster and you will pay for this?” I said in between sobs. He walked closer to me and took my hands but I jerked away from him. “You’re coming with me.” He said and I twisted my head in confusion. “It’s either that join them.” He said in a husky voice as he pointed to my dead family. His threat didn’t mean anything to me. What was the use of living anymore if my entire family was gone? I was as good as dead. “I would rather die than go with you,” I replied in a grave tone. Ruiz and Lorenzo exchanged disbelieving glances but I stood firm, my eyes flashing with determination.Chapter 62 Ruiz Giovanni ~•~ It took me a second to process what was happening. “Fuck!” I cursed through gritted teeth when it dawned on me that my mother was missing. My noise woke Carla from her sleep. “What’s going on?” She asked, her voice slightly groggy. I took a deep breath and narrowed my eyes at her. “Did you touch my phone yesterday?” I had to ask because I didn’t recall putting my phone on silent. There was no way I would have missed so many calls from them. I was very alert and would have heard my phone ringing. Carla nodded, rubbing her eyes with her hand. “Yes, I had to put it on silent because someone was constantly calling and I didn’t want to interrupt your sleep.” My jaw hardened and my hands curled into a fist. I couldn’t believe she would fuck up like that. She knew how my life was and how important it would be to wake me up if someone was constantly trying to reach me. “Get out, Carla!” My husky voice echoed through the room and she f
Chapter 61 Ruiz Giovanni ~•~ Most people around me always thought of me as unhinged. At first, I found it offensive when they labeled me as unhinged, but after I took a step back and thought about all my actions, I realized I was actually an unhinged person. As I drove back home, I couldn’t help but wonder how Ava would react when she eventually realized that her date was dead. Yes, I killed Marcus. He wasn’t an honest person. He wanted to hurt MY Ava and I wouldn’t just sit and watch that happen. I couldn’t just pretend like I didn’t see him kissing another woman. Now both of them would continue whatever they wanted to do in the afterlife. I wanted to clear my head, so I took the longest route back home. Just as I turned on the car stereo and started playing loud music, my phone started ringing. I let out a loud sigh when I saw that it was Carla who was calling me. “What do you want?” I asked in annoyance when I answered the call. “Where are you? I mis
Ava Martinez ~•~ When I arrived at the house, I was excited to see Maria. Maria had been away for a while because she had to visit her family. It was safe to say that my stay at the house was boring because of her absence. I missed her a lot and I was glad to have her back. “I got a lot of clothes for you when I went shopping the other day,” I said to Maria as she accompanied me upstairs. “Ruiz allowed you to go shopping?” She asked with a puzzled expression registered on her face. “Wow, that’s new.” I understood her shock because I could count how many times I had left the house since he trapped me there. I was even surprised that he allowed me to have this newfound freedom. I couldn’t help but laugh as I continued. “He even allowed me to go out on a date with a man I met at the mall. I just finished having a lunch date.” Maria paused and gasped in disbelief. “Are you serious, Ava? How did it happen?” I hesitated for a while as I thought about the perfe
Chapter 59 Ruiz Giovanni ~•~ Ava thought I was cool with the idea of her going out on a date with a random man who she met at the mall. But she didn’t know that it made me jealous and upset. I had promised to stop controlling her life. I had even gotten rid of the cloned phone. But no matter how hard I tried to respect her boundaries, I couldn’t shake off the urge to know every detail about her life. She thought she was going alone on a date but I had other plans. I couldn’t just sit and watch someone else take her away from me. I needed to do something about it. Initially, I thought Ava would get upset and cancel her plans if I asked her to go with security. But she wasn’t fazed by it. She agreed without hesitation. I was surprised. Maybe she really liked the man and wanted to go on a date with him badly. Or maybe she knew what I was up to and didn’t want me to win. I asked the security to keep a close eye on them. Earlier, I asked Ava to send me details of
Chapter 58 Ava Martinez ~•~ It was weird that I was being escorted to a date with security. But that was the only way I was allowed to be able to leave the house. Marcus had sent me details of where he wanted to meet and I was on my way there. I mean, we were on our way there - me and the security. I was nervous to see Marcus. It wasn’t like I had a crush on him or something. I just didn’t want to accidentally spill something about my life to him while we talked. My phone buzzed with a text from him. He was texting to let me know that he had already arrived at the location. We were only a few minutes away, so I didn’t bother to respond to his text. Soon enough, we pulled up at the driveway of the restaurant. “You’re not coming in with me,” I told the security as he opened the door for me to step out of the car. He raised his hand in mock surrender. “I’m aware, you’ve already mentioned it a thousand times.” He responded with a soft chuckle. He was right. I di
Chapter 57 Ava Martinez ~•~ Ever since the day I came back from the mall, I have been getting constant calls from the guy who collected my number from the mall. Initially, I ignored him but he was persistent, so I just decided to answer my phone. I made it clear to him that my life was already complicated enough and I didn’t need new people. But he claimed he didn’t mind and was open to making my life better. I didn’t think any human being was capable of making my life better. For a while, I stopped answering his calls and he resorted to texting me. What did he see in me that made him so attracted to me? In order to get him off my back, I decided to respond to his text. We started talking and I figured out he wasn’t bad to talk to after all. I spent the previous night talking to him and he ended up asking me out on a date. I was skeptical at first but then I decided that I was going to accept his offer. Ruiz had agreed to stop controlling my life, so I decid
Chapter 56 Ruiz Giovanni ~•~ I was resting at the poolside when my phone started ringing. I groaned inwardly as I retrieved it from the table beside my chair. I wanted to have a chill afternoon without disturbance but now, someone was calling me. As I glanced at the screen to see who the caller was, I sat upright on the reclining chair. Why was my bank calling me? “Talk to me,” I demanded as I answered the phone. “Good day, Mr. Giovanni.” The man greeted calmly. “There’s a large transaction about to happen on your card. I just wanted to cross-check and make sure that you are aware.” I nodded even though he couldn’t see me. “Sure, I’m aware,” I replied, running my hands through my hair. “How much is it though?” I had given Ava my card to go shopping earlier. But it was weird for the bank to call me because I didn’t think she would spend a large sum of money that would catch their attention. “$500k.” My eyes widened in disbelief and I gasped in shock. “$
Chapter 55 Ava Martinez ~•~ After having that conversation with Ruiz, it felt like an imaginary weight was lifted off my shoulder. I had been living in tension and it felt like torture, but hearing him apologize and agreeing to give me my freedom felt so good. I wanted to see if he was serious about letting me go wherever I wanted, so I decided to tell him I was going out to the mall. I wanted to shop for some new clothes, shoes, and accessories. Even if I didn’t have any particular place in mind to wear them to, I just wanted to partake in retail therapy. Shopping has always been therapeutic for me and I couldn’t wait to do it. It was almost noon and I was still on my bed. I had already showered and eaten, but it was the weekend and I didn’t have anything to do, so I was having a lazy day on my bed. But when the idea of telling Ruiz I wanted to go shopping came to my mind, I climbed out of my bed and made my way to his room. I knocked on his door multiple time
Chapter 54 Ava Martinez ~•~ I was on the phone with my siblings when I heard someone knocking on my door. I rounded up the call before heading over to answer the door. I opened the door slowly and popped my head outside. Ruiz was standing in front of the door. I wanted to slam the door at his face but I decided to be nice. “What do you want?” I asked, glaring at him. Ruiz let out a deep sigh. “I want to talk to you.” What did he want to talk to me about? I wasn’t interested in being in the same space with me. I didn’t even want him to come close to me. “What do you want to talk to me about?” I asked, rolling my eyes at him. “Can I come inside?” He asked, instead of answering my question. Was he out of his mind? After what happened the last time, he still wanted to come inside my room. “No, I can hear you from here.” I shook my head firmly. Ruiz sighed. “It’s confidential, I don’t want anybody to eavesdrop on our conversation.” I hesitated for a whil
