The Fracture

Ronan didn't sleep. By dawn, the Ashcroft mansion was already under a brutal, suffocating lockdown. Security personnel had doubled at every perimeter gate, internal access to the main wings was entirely restricted, and not a single soul moved through the corridors without direct biometric clearance. Someone had leaked the black-ops operation. Someone had compromised his elite team, and Ronan was going to tear the house apart to find out who.

Mireya stood in the center of the dimly lit war room, her arms folded tightly across her chest as her eyes scanned the massive wall screens. The displays flashed with tactical maps, intercepted satellite signals, and the jagged red lines of the failed extraction routes.

"She wasn't there?" Mireya asked quietly, breaking the heavy silence.

Ronan didn't look at her. His focus remained locked on the data feed, his face an impenetrable mask of cold fury. "No," he said, his voice flat. "They moved her before my units even breached the outer perimeter."

"Because they knew you were coming," Mireya said.

Ronan offered nothing but a heavy, chilling silence. That was answer enough.

Mireya's chest tightened, a wave of frustration washing over her. "There's a leak inside this house, Ronan. A real one."

"I am well aware." His tone was perfectly controlled, but the sharp, aggressive twitch in his jawline told a completely different story.

"Then stop shutting me out," she pressed, stepping closer to his side, refusing to let him ignore her. "You told me I am part of this now. Start acting like it."

That finally got his attention.

Ronan's gaze snapped to hers, his piercing silver eyes drilling into her with a dangerous intensity. "You want in?" he asked, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper. "Then understand this right now, Mireya. The exact moment you step fully into this war, there is no stepping back. There are no exit strategies."

"I already crossed that line the morning I stood at the altar," she shot back, holding his gaze without flinching.

A heavy beat passed between them. Ronan studied her face, searching for any sign of hesitation or fear. Finding none, he gave a single, stiff nod.

"Fine," he said, turning back to the main console. "Then we start with the suspects."

With a swift swipe of his hand, three names and corporate profiles appeared on the primary screen. Senior staff. Deeply trusted. Universally cleared. And now, entirely questionable.

Mireya stepped closer to the monitors, her mind flashing back to the events of the previous night. "The maid," she said immediately, pointing to the screen. "In the west corridor. She came out of your private study just minutes before the raid began."

Ronan's eyes narrowed instantly. "Name?"

"Elena."

Adrian, standing near the auxiliary console, typed rapidly into his terminal. "Her background check is flawlessly clean," he reported, shaking his head. "Three years of continuous employment. No financial anomalies. No flags."

"Then dig deeper," Ronan ordered, his voice echoing off the walls. "People don't just wake up one morning and decide to betray me. Find out who holds her leash."

Across the city, far from the high tech security of the Montclair estate, the air was thick with the smell of damp concrete. Arabella Sutton sat perfectly still, her muscles aching as Mardison Varkos circled her chair like a predator sizing up its prey.

"You're significantly stronger than we initially expected, Miss Sutton," Mardison said smoothly, her heels clicking rhythmically against the floor.

Arabella said absolutely nothing, keeping her chin up despite the raw exhaustion weighing down her limbs.

"Most people break completely by day three," Mardison continued, pausing to look down at her with a chillingly elegant smile.

"I'm not most people," Arabella demanded, her voice dry and ragged, but fierce.

Mardison’s smile widened just a fraction, devoid of any real human warmth. "No," she agreed softly. "You certainly aren't. But you see, you are merely a distraction."

Arabella’s pulse stuttered violently in her chest, ice sliding down her spine. "A distraction for what?"

"For Mireya," Mardison whispered, leaning down until she was inches from Arabella's face. "And more importantly, for Ronan."

"What do you want from them?" Arabella asked, her breath hitching.

Mardison straightened her tailored jacket, her expression turning completely blank. "Control," she said simply.

Back at the mansion, Elena was brought into the holding room within the hour. She looked completely terrified, her skin pale and her chest heaving with frantic breaths as her eyes darted wildly between Ronan and Mireya.

"I didn't do anything, I swear!" she cried out immediately, her voice cracking under the pressure.

Ronan didn't sit down. He didn't even blink. He stood over her like an executioner. "You accessed my private study."

"No.... I just went in to clean..."

"You logged directly into my secure tactical system," Ronan cut her off, his voice dangerously low.

"I don't even know how to use that computer! I don't know the passwords!"

Ronan took one slow, deliberate step closer, and the entire room seemed to drop ten degrees. "Lying to me," he said quietly, "is a mistake you will not survive twice, Elena."

Tears spilled over the woman's cheeks, her whole body trembling. "I swear to you, someone told me to go in there!" she sobbed, clutching her hands together. "They gave me a keycard and told me to just insert the flash drive! I didn't touch anything else!"

"Who?" Ronan demanded.

She hesitated, her eyes widening in sheer panic as she looked toward the door.

That hesitation was all it took.

Adrian moved instantly, pulling a tablet forward and triggering a live, high definition security feed from the previous night. It showed the restricted hallway. Elena was seen entering the study, looking nervous. But then, the camera captured a second figure slipping in right behind her.

Mireya leaned closer to the screen, her breath catching sharply in her throat. "That's not a member of the domestic staff," she whispered, her hand flying to her mouth.

The man on the footage moved with absolute confidence. No hesitation. No fear of being seen by the cameras. Ronan's expression darkened into something entirely primal. "He's internal," he growled.

"Security?" Adrian asked, his fingers hovering over the lock down controls.

"No," Ronan replied, his voice dropping into a register that made Mireya’s stomach twist. "Someone much higher."

Before the camera could capture the man's face clearly, the footage suddenly cut to static. Wiped. Deliberately erased from the main server.

Mireya stepped back slowly, the gravity of the situation crashing down on her. "This isn't just a random leak," she said, her voice shaking. "They are inside your security system, Ronan. They're inside your staff, your operations..."

"They are inside my house," Ronan finished for her, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles popped.

☆☆☆

Later that night, the weight of the house became too much to bear. Mireya stood alone on the secluded east wing balcony, watching the city lights stretch out endlessly beneath the dark sky. Her mind repeatedly replayed every single detail. The leak. The failed rescue. The unknown man on the security feed. Lucas's warning.

A soft, distinct click sounded on the stones behind her. She didn't turn around.

"I was wondering how long it would take you to come out here and find me," Mireya said quietly.

Andy Montclair stepped out of the shadows and into the dim balcony light, a faint, knowing smirk on his face. "You shouldn't be out here alone," he said smoothly.

"And yet," she replied, turning her head slightly, "here you are."

Her pulse quickened with a sudden spike of adrenaline. "How did you get past Ronan's new security detail?"

Andy smiled faintly, leaning against the stone railing with casual ease. "You're asking the completely wrong question, Mireya."

A heavy, suffocating silence stretched between them as the cold wind whipped past. Mireya turned around slowly to face him fully. "What do you actually want, Andy?"

His careless expression vanished, his gaze sharpening until it was dangerous. "To help you."

Mireya let out a sharp, bitter laugh. "To help me? You're deeply connected to this, aren't you? I saw your reaction at the gala. You knew the rescue failed before Hale even called me."

"Of course I'm connected," he said simply, offering no denial.

Mireya’s stomach dropped, a cold dread settling deep in her core. "And you're just standing here admitting that to me?"

"I'm admitting," he said, taking a slow, predatory step closer to her, "that you are rapidly running out of time."

Mireya held her ground, refusing to take a step back.

"Where is my sister, Andy? Where is Arabella?"

Andy's expression shifted slightly. It wasn't guilt, and it certainly wasn't fear. It was something far more complicated, a dark calculation. "She is alive," he said quietly.

A massive wave of relief hit Mireya so hard it almost made her knees buckle. "Thank God..."

"But she won't be for long," Andy added, his voice completely devoid of mercy.

The words sliced through her like a blade. "Then tell me where she is! Stop playing these sick games!"

"I can't do that," he said.

"You mean you won't," she corrected sharply.

A long pause hung over the balcony. Andy watched her face, measuring her desperation before he finally spoke again. "I can trade, Mireya."

Mireya's chest tightened into a painful knot. "Trade for what?"

Andy's gaze locked entirely onto hers, his voice dropping into a deadly serious tone. "For you."

The entire world seemed to stand completely still.

"What?" she whispered.

"You walk away from Ronan," Andy said calmly, as if proposing a standard business transaction. "You walk away from the Ashcroft name. You walk away from this entire war."

Her heart pounded violently against her ribs, the sound deafening in her ears. "And in return?"

"In return, I give you Arabella. Safe, untouched, and free."

The silence shattered inside her mind. "You're completely insane," she whispered, her voice trembling.

"Am I?" he asked softly, taking one final step toward her. "Or am I the only person in this entire mansion currently offering you a legitimate way out?"

Mireya’s mind raced at a terrifying speed, names and faces colliding in her thoughts. Ronan. The brutal war. The endless lies. Lucas. Her missing sister.

"You're asking me to abandon everything," she said, her voice barely audible.

"I'm asking you to survive, Mireya, you never wanted this to begin with." Andy replied.

Behind the heavy velvet curtains of the balcony door, a dark shadow shifted silently in the dark. Unseen. Unheard. Listening to every single word.

And for the first time since this entire nightmare began, Mireya was no longer just a pawn caught between two powerful men. She was about to choose a side.

The studio lights flickered once, dropping the room into darkness before they suddenly steadied. Mireya didn't move. She felt it before she saw anything. That quiet, heavy shift in the air, the unmistakable, prickling sensation of being watched from the shadows. "Adrian?" she called out, her voice tight. No answer came. Lila stood frozen near the mannequin, her fingers tightening around the edge of the cutting table until her knuckles turned white. "Did someone just..." A soft, distinct sound cut her off. The heavy click of the studio door shut from the outside. Mireya turned sharply, her gaze sweeping the empty room. Her frantic pulse slowed, but it wasn't from a wave of relief. Whoever had been lurking in the dark had already left. They weren't acting yet, they were just watching. She exhaled slowly, forcing the panic down, and dragged her focus back to the immediate danger. "Lock the side door," she instructed Lila, her voice deadpan and authoritative. "No one comes in he

The studio was quiet, the steady, rhythmic hum of the sewing machines punctuating the early morning. Mireya stood over a mannequin, adjusting the fit of a sleek black gown. The Ashcroft mansion never felt more like a battlefield. Mireya's heels clicked softly against the polished marble as she returned to the war room, the card Andy had left burning a hole in her pocket. She couldn't stop thinking about his words, about the choice he offered. Her pulse raced, her chest tight, and every shadow in the hallway seemed to whisper that danger was closer than she dared admit.Ronan was already there, reviewing a set of live feeds from the mansion's inner corridors. His posture was rigid, jaw clenched, eyes sharper than any security camera. "You have a visitor," Adrian said quietly, as if speaking too loud might break the tension. Ronan didn't move. He didn't even blink. "I know," he said softly. Mireya froze. The silence stretched before Ronan finally turned, silver eyes flashing with a controlled storm. "Did you speak to him?" he asked, his voice low and dangerous. "I... I didn't answer," she admitted. "You're running out of time," he said sharply. "Ever

Sleep no longer came easily to Mireya Sutton. After the failed rescue attempt at the northern docks, the massive Ashcroft mansion felt entirely different. It was tense, heavy, and watchful. Every hushed conversation between the domestic staff carried the sting of suspicion, and every closed door felt like a deliberate barrier meant to keep her isolated. Arabella was still missing, somewhere out there in the freezing dark, and now Mireya knew for certain she had been taken by a monstrous syndicate. She had just stepped into the grand reception corridor, her mind spinning with a thousand worst case scenarios, when a familiar voice stopped her dead in her tracks."I'm not here to negotiate with your legal teams," the man said, his voice echoing off the high marble walls. "I'm here to see her."Mireya’s pulse spiked violently. Her breath caught in her throat. That voice was woven directly into the fabric of her past, a past she thought she had buried deep enough to never see the light of

The encrypted numbers glowing on the tablet screen did not lie, but Mireya Sutton still wished they did. She stood entirely alone in the suffocating quiet of Ronan’s private lounge, her fingers gripping the edges of the device until her knuckles turned white. Outside, the city lights stretched beneath the estate like a cold, jagged field of fallen stars. She didn't look at them. Her eyes were locked completely on two words blinking in an amber font against the black background: Veltrane Consortium. These weren't random transactions or automated accounting glitches. They were too deliberate. Too perfectly timed. Every single wire transfer aligned exactly with the chaotic morning Arabella had vanished from the wedding. The heavy double doors of the lounge clicked open. Mireya didn't need to turn around to know who it was. The sudden, heavy shift in the room's air pressure belonged to only one man."You're still working," Ronan said. His low baritone was entirely too calm, cutting throug
