Ladina

The camera lens was tiny, like a small bean.

I couldn't stop thinking about it. Oliver had said it was expensive, military-grade equipment. Someone had planned this carefully and spent a lot of money to watch us.

Someone had been watching me!

Gabriel didn’t say a word, but he was furious. He grabbed the iron fire poker and marched across the room and started smashing the air vents, ripping them open one by one with pure, violent strength.

"Gabriel," Oliver warned softly.

"I'm checking every single one," Gabriel replied.

I couldn't bear to watch. The sound of tearing metal hurt my ears. Suddenly, the beautiful glass walls of the cabin made me feel exposed and hunted. Somewhere in this house, a hidden camera had watched me cry, sleep, and have sex with my stepbrothers.

I walked away like a zombie. I went into the small bathroom, locked the door, and slid down on the floor. There were no windows. I checked everywhere for cameras and stuffed a towel into the small metal air vent just to be safe. Then I sat in the dark, hugging my knees, and listened to the boys tear the house apart.

I stayed there a long time. Eventually, the smashing stopped, and I heard the boys talking right outside my door.

"Found another one," Gabriel said in disgust. "It's pointed down the main hallway to watch all the doors."

"And there's a third one behind the bed in the master bedroom," Oliver added. "Look at the wires. They are cut clean. They aren't connected to anything right now."

"So they're useless," Gabriel said.

"No, think about it," Oliver replied. "This house doesn't have internet or a router. These cameras can't send the video to anyone far away. The footage is trapped inside the devices."

"So?"

"So, whoever wants the video has to come back here to get it."

We all fell silent. I covered my mouth in shock. The person doing this wasn't watching us for safety from a computer screen. They were going to come back through the deadly snowstorm to this very house.

Later in the evening, the cabin became freezing cold again. The power was still out, and the blizzard howled outside. I had a headache and felt completely numb with exhaustion.

Then, I smelled something wonderful: tomatoes, garlic, and hot pasta. My stomach growled loudly. I unlocked the door and walked toward the kitchen.

Oliver was cooking over a small blue flame from a portable camping stove. He didn't turn around. "There's enough food for everyone," he said simply.

When he finished cooking, he brought the bowls to the cold living room. He set mine down and sat far away from me to give me space. Gabriel sat across the room, holding the metal poker.

I was sitting down quietly.

"You don't have to talk," Oliver told me. "But someone locked the three of us in here on purpose. Think about it and the possible reason why. They want to make us afraid of each other."

"And what if it’s one of you?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Gabriel looked up angrily, but Oliver held up a hand to calm him down.

"If you think that, then it's better to keep your eyes on us than to hide," Oliver said. "Whoever did this wants us divided. We shouldn't give them what they want. We need to aim our fear in the right direction."

I took a bite of the hot food. It tasted amazing and made me feel a little better. "Okay," I finally said. "We stand united against whoever did this."

Gabriel still didn't say anything, but he put the iron poker down on the floor to show he agreed.

We ate in silence.

As the room got darker, the wind screamed against the house so loudly it drowned out every other noise.

Just as I was finishing my food, a sharp noise interrupted us.

BEEP.

It was a loud electronic sound. We all froze. Gabriel grabbed his weapon again.

The electronic keypad on the front door, which had been completely dead since the power went out, had just turned on. A small green light glowed in the dark.

I stopped breathing. The roads were buried in snow. Nobody should be able to reach that door.

I looked at Oliver. For the first time since we arrived, he looked truly terrified.

Then, we heard a slow grind. Someone on the outside was unlocking the bolt.

Green, Yellow, RedLadina "Nobody should touch it," Oliver warned us.He was standing up high on the arm of the couch. He held his bright lantern in one hand. His face was only a few inches away from the ceiling beam. "If this camera is turned on, and we cover it up, the stranger might count that as destroying it," Oliver explained carefully. "You both read the typed page in the basement. They will punish us if we break the cameras. Gabe, please put the heavy iron poker down.""I am just holding it," Gabriel argued defensively."You are holding it like you want to smash something with it," Oliver pointed out.Gabriel did not put the heavy metal tool down, but he did not swing it, either. A small muscle twitched angrily in his jaw. "Is the camera turned on right now?" Gabriel asked.Oliver used his finger to trace the thin black wire. He followed it to where it disappeared right into the stone wall."No," Oliver answered. "The wire is cut completely clean, just like the wires in the

The Girl in the DrawingLadina "Gabriel. Gabriel, please wake up," I called out, panicking in the dark. Before his eyes even opened, his hand reached out and grabbed my wrist. He held it very hard. He was ready to protect me. Then, he blinked and saw my face in the dim light. His tight grip immediately went soft. "What is it?" he asked quickly. "What happened?""It is the study," I said. I was shaking so much that I could barely get the words out of my mouth. "The wooden door is wide open. The small stove is lit and burning. Somebody was just in there."He did not even pause to think. He was up on his feet before I could finish my sentence. He leaned over and woke his brother. Suddenly, all three of us were running down the hallway. Gabriel ran first, holding the iron poker in his hand. Oliver ran right behind him, carrying the bright lantern to light our way. I followed behind both of them, running only in my socks. The wooden floor was freezing against my feet. When we reached th

The Quiet Between TouchesLadina"We should just burn it," Gabriel said. His voice was full of anger. "We should burn the whole house. The walls, the floor, everything inside it.""And then where do we sleep?" Oliver asked. He did not even look up from the tin can of food he was opening. "Do we sleep outside in the freezing snow?"It was eight thirty in the morning, and nobody had touched their coffee yet. The typed piece of paper was on the kitchen counter. We all stared at it like it was a dangerous snake that might bite us. Tonight, leave the study door open. It was just a few short words. But I had read those words so many times that they did not even look like real words anymore. They just looked like a terrible promise."They just want to get a reaction out of us," Oliver said calmly. "That is all this game is about. They want to see what we will do.""Then I will show them exactly what I will do," Gabriel yelled. He slammed his fist down on the marble counter. He hit it so har

The Only Room Without EyesLadina "Tell me again there are no cameras in here," I whispered.Oliver held up a lantern in the small study. "Nothing," he said. "I searched twice. I even took the clock apart."Gabriel stood behind me. "I searched it a third time," he added. "I checked every floorboard."I believed them, but I was still terrified to walk in. We just wanted one room where the stranger couldn't watch us or tell us what to do.Finally, I stepped inside. Gabriel locked the door, and Oliver started a fire in the stove. Gabriel brought blankets and made a bed on the floor. We sat down together by the fire. "I keep thinking about the video," I said. I am so scared. "I feel completely lost. "I don't know who I am right now," I whispered.Oliver looked at me gently. "You don't have to know what to do all the time if you don't want us here. Just tell us what you want. We can stay, or we can leave."Gabriel agreed. They left the choice completely up to me."Stay," I told them. "Bot

Ladina The living room now felt incredibly dangerous. I stood perfectly still, staring at the tablet on the kitchen island. I couldn't stop reading the red words on the screen: I have hours of this video. Do exactly what I say, or I will send it to James.Gabriel lost his temper first. He slammed his iron poker onto the counter, right next to the tablet. "I'll kill them," he yelled. "I will hunt down whoever is doing this.""Gabe, stop," Oliver said calmly. He didn't grab a weapon. Instead, he stepped forward to look closely at the black-and-white video playing on the screen.I forced myself to look, too. The video showed the couch, the fireplace, and the blankets. It was from our first night without power, when the three of us had huddled together to stay warm and let our guard down."You can't hunt them, Gabriel," Oliver explained. "The video signal is very strong. That means the person has a power source hidden somewhere on the property. They didn't walk back out into the freezing

Ladina Before we could understand what was going on, the front door quickly opened and slammed shut like a gunshot. Nobody came inside. Someone had opened the door just long enough to let the snowy wind blow in and threw a small, black case onto the floor. Then, they locked the door again from the outside.I knew what this meant right away. The snowstorm wasn't what was keeping us trapped. Someone else was in control of the locks.Oliver walked over to the black case slowly. He bent down to look at it without touching it. Gabriel reacted differently. He walked over and kicked it hard. He started swearing loudly at the door, the ceiling, and whoever might be listening to us. He was incredibly angry. While the brothers argued, I turned and left to clear my head. I walked down the dark hallway, found the small closet under the stairs, and went inside.I tried to calm down by counting my breaths. About fifteen minutes later, the doorknob turned. Gabriel stood in the doorway holding a fl
