The building erupted into chaos.

The sirens outside weren’t background noise anymore — they were a wall of sound, shaking the very air, punctuated by the bark of police orders through megaphones and the heavy slam of boots against pavement.

“Move her!” Mrs. Anderson snapped, her voice sharp as glass.

The guards hauled Avery toward the back corridor, their grips iron on her arms. Her wrists burned against the ropes, her legs stumbling to keep up. Every muscle screamed, but adrenaline pushed her forward.

Stephen walked ahead of them, his movements calm, deliberate — as if he’d already charted every exit, every fallback.

Behind them, Mrs. Anderson’s heels struck the floor like the ticking of a clock running out.

The back corridor reeked of dust and old plaster. A steel door loomed at the far end. One guard shoved it open, revealing an alley where the cold morning light spilled through.

And with it — chaos.

Police vehicles jammed the street beyond, their lights strobing red and blue. Offi

The next morning bled into the house with pale light.Avery was the first to stir. She woke before dawn, wandering barefoot through the halls, brushing her hand along the railings, opening doors as if hoping her missing memories might be tucked away inside. Every room was new yet strangely familiar to her, as though she were living in a dream she couldn’t quite place. When Tamer found her in the library, she was staring up at shelves of untouched books. She turned when she heard his footsteps.“There are so many,” she whispered, brushing dust off a spine. “Did we read them together?”Tamer’s throat tightened. “Not yet.”Her lips parted, the faintest hint of disappointment flashing across her face. “Then we should. Husband and wife should share things.”The word wife hit him with a force he didn’t let show. He only nodded, stepping closer. “We’ll start tonight.”The hours passed slowly, woven with domestic simplicity Avery clung to. She insisted on helping in the kitchen despite the st

The drive from the hospital felt longer than it truly was.Avery sat quietly in the passenger seat, her eyes flicking between the window and Tamer’s profile. Every now and then, she touched her wrist as though expecting the hospital band to still be there. Then she’d glance at him again, almost shyly.“Husband,” she murmured once, as though testing the word.Tamer’s grip on the wheel tightened. He forced a small nod. “Yes?”She smiled faintly. “Nothing. Just… making sure you’re real.”He swallowed hard, focusing on the road. The word husband lingered like smoke, intoxicating and suffocating all at once. The car finally pulled into the long driveway of his home — a modern estate with sharp lines, glass windows, and tall hedges for privacy. Security lights blinked awake as they rolled closer.Avery’s eyes widened. “This… this is ours?”Tamer hesitated, then said carefully, “It’s where we live, yes.”She pressed her face closer to the window, childlike awe softening her features. “It’s b

The morning light fell soft across Avery’s hospital bed. She stirred against the pillows, the faint tug of the IV in her arm anchoring her back into the sterile room. Her lashes lifted slowly. The first thing she saw was him.Tamer.He was there as always — seated close, his tall frame bent toward her, his dark eyes steady and watchful. Her lips curved faintly, and the word came out soft but certain.“Husband.”Tamer’s chest tightened. He forced his expression calm, nodding once. “I’m here.”The door eased open. Shane entered first, his face lined with exhaustion, a bouquet clutched awkwardly in his hand. Justin followed close behind, his steps hesitant, a notebook under his arm as though it could somehow justify his presence.Avery turned toward them. Her brow furrowed. Confusion flickered in her pale eyes. She blinked. “Who… who are they?”The words were so quiet, so childlike, that for a moment the room froze.Shane stiffened. “Avery… it’s me. Shane.” He stepped closer, his voice b

Morning sunlight spilled through the blinds of the hospital room, soft and golden, but the atmosphere was anything but calm.Avery was propped up against the pillows, her hair mussed, her complexion pale but no longer deathly. She picked absently at the blanket, her gaze flicking every now and then to Tamer seated at her bedside. He hadn’t moved all night, his hand still resting loosely over hers as if daring anyone to pull her away from him.But peace never lasted long in their world. The door burst open.“Where is she?” Shane’s voice cut through the sterile quiet like a blade.Avery startled, her wide eyes darting toward the doorway.Justin hurried in behind Shane, his face tight with nerves. “We came as soon as we heard—”But Shane was already at Avery’s side, his protective instincts flaring. His eyes swept her quickly, as though cataloguing every bruise, every bandage. His jaw hardened.“What did they do to you?” he demanded, his voice trembling with rage. “What did they do to my

The room was warm with the steady hum of machines, but Tamer still felt cold.Avery’s hand rested in his, delicate and trusting, her pulse faint against his palm. She looked fragile beneath the white sheets, her dark lashes resting against pale cheeks, but when she stirred and turned toward him, her lips curved into a sleepy smile that stole the air from his lungs.“Husband.”The word slipped from her mouth like it had always belonged there.Tamer forced his features into something gentle, though inside he was knotted tight with conflict.“Yes, Avery,” he murmured. She squeezed his hand weakly, as if testing whether he was real. “Don’t let go. Promise me.”“I promise.”The lie felt like glass in his throat — sharp, dangerous — but when she sighed in relief and closed her eyes again, he told himself he’d bleed on the shards if it meant keeping her safe.Later that morning, a nurse rolled in a tray of bland hospital food: oatmeal, weak tea, and a small bowl of fruit. Avery wrinkled her

The steady beeping of a heart monitor was the first thing she heard.Avery’s eyes fluttered open, heavy as though weighted with stone. The ceiling above her was white, unfamiliar. The sterile scent of antiseptic hung in the air. Her body felt numb except for the dull throb in her side, bandaged tight. For a moment, panic gripped her — flashes of gunfire, sirens, Mrs. Anderson’s cold smile. She tried to sit up, but the IV tugged at her arm, the pain flaring sharply.“Easy.”The voice was deep, steady, threaded with concern. Her gaze shifted — and there he was.Tamer sat by her bedside, shoulders broad but stiff with tension, his shirt wrinkled and streaked faintly with dried blood. Not hers, surely…?His dark eyes locked on her, and in them she saw something that made her chest ache: relief so raw it almost looked like grief.“Avery.” He exhaled her name like it was the only word he trusted. “Thank God.”Her lips parted, dry, unsure. The words slipped out before she could even think.“
