Liam didn't move. He stayed on the ground where Gideon had put him, staring at Ayla like she'd grown a second head in front of him.

"You don’t mean it. The moon goddess chose him as your mate aswell," he said, the words coming out slow, like they didn't fit right in his mouth. "That's not possible. Nobody bonds three times. N-Nobody's ever bonded three times, not in a hundred years."

"I don't care what's possible." Ayla's hand was still pressed flat against her chest, the ache settling into something she could almost breathe around now. "It is not like I plan this or make it happen. I just, I felt it happen. You were standing right there."

"I was standing right there watching some stranger put his hands on you." Liam pushed himself up onto one elbow, wincing. "You expect me to just accept that? That the universe decided you needed a third?"

"I don't expect you to accept anything." Her voice cracked, but she kept it steady. "I stopped needing your permission the second you said those words in front of the whole pack."

Julian hadn't moved either, still positioned half in front of her, his eyes fixed on Liam with the flat, patient stillness of a predator deciding whether something was worth the energy of a strike. Gideon stood on her other side, close enough that she could feel the warmth coming off him, though he hadn't touched her again since he'd helped her up.

The stranger rose to his feet beside her, offering his hand. She took it, and this time the pull didn't knock the air out of her lungs.

"Gideon, my lady," he said, like that answered everything. "I'm Julian's general."

"Gideon," she repeated, testing the shape of the name in her mouth, "is Julian's general."

"I am not deaf neither blind. I'm quite aware of who he is." Liam's eyes cut to him, contempt and something rawer underneath it. "Everyone's heard of Ashgrove's general. Didn't expect to find him with his hands on my mate."

"Ex-mate." Gideon's voice was calm in a way that seemed to make it worse. "You said the words. I was told wolves take rejection seriously in this territory."

"We do." Liam got to his feet slowly, favoring one side. Blood ran from a split in his lip, and he wiped it with the back of his hand, smearing it across his knuckles. "That's why I intend to remind everyone exactly what it means to touch what used to be mine."

"She's not yours." Julian's voice had gone flat, dangerous in a way Ayla hadn't heard from him before. "She was never yours the way you think. A mate isn't something you own, Liam. If you'd understood that a year ago, you might still have her."

For a moment nobody spoke. The wind moved through the trees at the edge of the clearing, and somewhere behind them one of the wagon horses shifted its weight, tack creaking in the quiet.

"You think this is over because you've got her standing behind you," Liam said finally, his eyes fixed on Ayla now instead of Julian. "It's not. Rejection doesn't erase twenty-three years of devotion and loyalty, whatever you tell yourself to make this feel clean won’t last, she’d be back in my arms before the week runs to an end."

Julian chuckled as he clears his throat. "What you do not understand Liam is that your performance out there erased whatever you thought you owned." Ayla made herself hold his gaze, even though her legs still felt unsteady beneath her. "You made a choice in front of hundreds of witnesses twice now. This is what that choice looks like now. You don't get to be angry that it worked." His voice had gone flat, dangerous. "I'd leave while you still can."

"She's still a member of my pack whether you like it or not." Liam pushed himself upright, swaying slightly. His eyes cut to Ayla, something raw and furious moving behind them. "You think this ends because some general put his hands on her? I rejected her. That doesn't mean I hand her over to you."

"You already handed her over." Gideon's voice was calm in a way that made it worse. "The second you said the words in front of your whole pack. How many times do we have to tell you for you to get it into that thick skull of yours, huh?"

Liam's jaw worked. For a moment Ayla thought he might come at them again, and Julian must have thought the same, because he shifted his weight, angling himself half in front of her without seeming to notice he'd done it.

But Liam only laughed, short and bitter. "Fine. Take her." He spat blood onto the dirt, his mouth twisting into something that wasn’t quite a smile. "But this isn't over. Nothing that happens across a border stays across a border forever, Alpha." He said the title like an insult. "You'll learn that."

"Is that a threat?" Gideon asked, unbothered.

"It's a fact." Liam turned, already limping toward the tree line. He paused once, just at the edge of the clearing, and looked back at Ayla in a way that made her chest tighten despite everything. "I hope he's worth what you gave up tonight."

Then he was gone, swallowed by the dark between the trees, and the clearing went quiet except for the sound of her own uneven breathing.

Julian let out a breath through his nose, slow and controlled, like he'd been holding it the whole time. "Are you hurt?"

"I'll live." Ayla flexed the fingers on her bruised wrist and winced. Twin sets of finger marks were already rising against her skin, dark against the pale underside of her arm. "It's not the first time he's left marks."

Something moved across Julian's face, quick and dark, gone almost before she could name it. "It's the last time," he said. "Whatever happens from here, nobody puts their hands on you like that again. I mean that."

Gideon crouched to check one of the wagon wheels, though Ayla suspected the excuse was mostly to give them the moment as he could hear every word regardless. "We should move," he said without looking up. "Before our friendly fighter comes with friends. The border's not far behind us but I'd rather not test how far his pride stretches tonight."

Julian nodded once and turned back to Ayla. "Can you walk?"

"I can walk." Ayla says as she straightens her spine, ignoring the tremble still working through her legs. She'd walked out of that hall on her own two feet with half the pack laughing behind her. She could manage this.

The days that followed settled into something Ayla hadn't let herself hope for.It was not tensed like back in her home, but more like she was waiting for someone to be cruel, or full of small unremarkable things. Meals that didn't come with commentary about how much she ate. Mornings where nobody's eyes tracked the shape of her body across a room. She kept waiting for it to curdle into something else, the way good things always had before, and each day it didn't, she felt a little more of the old bracing in her shoulders start to loosen. She found Julian in the training yard most mornings, going over reports with his captains before the rest of the territory woke. He always paused when he saw her at the fence, waved off whoever he was speaking with, and came to stand beside her even if only for a few minutes.

Elder Whitmore was shown into the receiving hall a little while later, his robes dusty from travel, his expression arranged into something careful and contrite. Ayla had seen that expression before, usually right before he asked one of his fellow elders for a favor he had no intention of repaying."Ayla." He said her name like it cost him something. "Look at you. A Luna of Ashgrove.""Father." She stood at the center of the hall, Julian at her shoulder and Gideon near the door, having appeared without being summoned the moment word spread. "Why are you here?""Can't a father come to see his precious daughter?" He spread his hands, wounded. "I've traveled through the night to get here. I hope that counts for something.""It counts

  • Triple Bonded: The Rejected Luna   My father is here

Ayla stood at the window of the room Julian had given her, watching pack members move through the courtyard below, none of them stopping to whisper behind their hands or glance twice in her direction.Nobody here knew her yet. She wasn't sure what to do with that.A knock sounded at her door, soft enough that she almost missed it. When she opened it, a young woman stood on the other side holding a tray, her eyes darting up to Ayla's face and away again, nervous in a way that had nothing to do with cruelty."Breakfast, my lady." She set the tray down on the small table near the window without being asked, then hesitated. "Alpha Julian said you should eat something before he comes by. He said you probably wouldn't remember to on your own."

  • Triple Bonded: The Rejected Luna   You don’t speak

The wagons rolled out before the moon had climbed another hour across the sky. Ayla sat wedged between crates of supplies under a blanket someone had draped over her shoulders without asking, watching the gap in the canvas where the Hood Pack's border shrank slowly behind them. She kept waiting to feel like she'd made a mistake. It didn't come.Julian rode alongside the wagon for the first stretch of road, close enough that she could hear the creak of his saddle every time his horse shifted gait. He didn't say much at first, seemed content just to be within reach of her, but after a while he angled his horse closer and matched pace with the wheels."You're allowed to be angry," he said."I'm not angry." She pulled the blanket tigh

Ayla ran until her lungs burned, her legs carrying her toward the only place she believed she could be safe. Behind her, she could still hear Liam crashing through the underbrush, refusing to give up the chase. She could see the border ahead. Beyond it, a cluster of wagons stood loaded and ready, men moving between them. Julian stood near the front, giving instructions to one of his guards. The moment he caught sight of her running toward him, his attention snapped in her direction. He went still, the way a wolf goes still right before it strikes. Ayla didn't slow down. Her chest heaved and her arm throbbed where Liam's fingers had dug into her skin earlier.Julian's eyes moved past her, scanning the trees. His jaw tightened. "Someone's behind you."He pulled her behind him before she could turn around, putting his body between her and whatever was coming. Ayla fisted her hand in the back of his shirt and held on.A low growl built in his chest. His shoulders squared, and the calm Alp
