~ELENA~
“We dare you to kiss him.”
That was how the night started uphill or downhill depending on how you look at it.
***
I twirl and twist my hips dancing to the loud beat thumping through the club, completely lost in the music.
Valentina and Gianna, my best friends, and partners-in-chaos, are giggling loudly beside me, and dancing to the music like no one is watching.
It's our first proper girls night out in years, as we haven't seen each other for a while now.
I just returned back to the country, Italy, because mom finally decided to move in with her new husband, and I decided to hang out with my girls at the club because I couldn't think of a better way to catch up with them.
Besides, I also want to forget about Alessandro, my ex boyfriend who I caught cheating on me. He broke up with me after I caught him cheating and blamed me for finding out.
Pathetic, right??
And now, I just want to have all the fun I can to forget about him.
“Oh my!!” Valentina suddenly exclaims, freezing mid-dance, and staring at something or someone with bulging and drooling eyes behind me.
Gianna and I trace her eyes to the entrance of the club and we both exclaim simultaneously.
“Fucking hell!!”
At the entrance of the club stands a man who commands attention with effortless grace.
Towering and broad-shouldered, his tall frame is sculpted to perfection—his slim waist tapering into long, lean legs that move with the poised elegance of a predator.
His face is a masterpiece, chiseled like that of a Greek god, with high cheekbones, a strong jawline, and full, sensual lips.
Piercing eyes ... .dark and enigmatic…held the kind of intensity that made hearts stutter, while his tousled hair, rich and thick, frames his divine features with casual perfection.
Every inch of him radiates power, danger, and breathtaking beauty.
“That man is fucking handsome!” Valentina whispers, clearly stunned.
“I'll do anything to have him in my bed! I'll sell my soul if I have to!” Gianna says dreamily.
I roll my eyes. They're always like that at the sight of a handsome man.
But I must confess, that man over there is easily the most gorgeous man I've ever seen. He's a beautiful man!!! He's breathtaking.
“When was the last time you said you kissed again??” Gianna asks.
“After I broke up with Alessandro” I reply to her.
Valentina and Gianna give each other knowing, weird looks. I know that look and it has never ended well for me.
It was a look of mischief.
“What are you girls up to??” I laugh.
“Should we spice things up a bit??” Valentina teases.
“Yes, yes, yes!” Gianna echoes, her voice dripping with trouble.
“Elena” Valentina grins. “I dare you to walk over to that handsome stranger and kiss him passionately on the lips”
“We're daring you to kiss him” Gianna supports with a wicked smile.
My eyes widen and my jaw drops.
“You must be joking!” I cry out in disbelief.
“No, we aren't,” Valentina says with a wicked smile.
“I'm not doing that, com'on” I say, glaring at both of them.
“Then you are doing our laundry for a month,” Gianna says sweetly.
“Fucking hell….you know how much I hate doing the laundry” I groan.
“Then fucking go kiss him. It's just a kiss, yeah, yeah??” Gianna shrugs.
“Just a kiss,” Valentina echoes, giggling.
I roll my eyes.
Remind me how I got to be friends with these girls again.
Why am I even friends with these lunatics??
I turn to sneak another glance at the handsome stranger only to realize that he is walking straight towards us.
“Look, he's approaching us!” Gianna gasps.
“I don't think so. I think he's coming to the bar counter and we're literally standing close to the bar counter” I reply, starting to panic a bit.
“It doesn't matter. Now is the right time to approach him. Take the opportunity” Valentina says.
“No, I won't” I refuse.
“Yes, you'll!” They both choruses.
“I won't!”
“You will!”
“I won't!”
And as we continue to argue, the handsome stranger keeps coming closer and closer to us.
And when he is just a few inches away from us, I suddenly feel a push from the back and find myself stepping forward to the handsome stranger and blocking his way.
“I'll fucking kill Valentina and Gianna for this!” I scream inwardly.
The handsome stranger stares at me from head to toe and raises an eyebrow in confusion or maybe…amusement.
And even though I know I am not looking bad in the red body fitting gown I wore that clings to my body and brings out all my curves, I still feel very embarrassed and wish the ground would open up and swallow me.
“What do you want, young lady??” He speaks, and his voice, oh my goodness, his voice could make any woman wet at the spot, myself included.
I swallow hard, suddenly searching for words to say.
I can hear Valentina and Gianna chuckling and giggling behind me. It is fun for them.
I deepen my resolve to kill them after this.
“Ummm….my friends…” I stammer, then take a deep breath.
“My friends dared me to kiss you” I blurt out.
His eyes widen, and a mischievous grin appears on his lips.
“I'm sorry” I apologize, and because he's way taller than me, tiptoes and holds his cheeks and kisses him on the lips.
He doesn’t step back and the moment our lips touch, I feel an electrifying feeling within me.
His lips are warm, and I feel a spark run down my spine like lightning.
I linger for a moment ... .okay, maybe two…before I step back from him.
I start to apologize when he interrupts me.
“We're not done yet. We only just started” he says and pulls me closer to him, then bent his head and kisses me fiercely.
~ELENA~Alessandro’s fingers dig so deep into my skin that I’m sure I’ll bruise. My pulse thunders in my ears, drowning out even the whispers of the crowd.Nico doesn’t blink. Doesn’t move. He’s a statue carved out of ice and rage, his jaw tight, his eyes locked on Alessandro like he’s already chosen the best way to destroy him.And then….he smiles. It’s not kind. Not playful. Not the cocky smirk he wears when he’s teasing me at home. This smile is cruel. Deadly.A promise.I’ve seen Vincenzo’s violence. Riccardo’s cold precision. But Nico? He’s dangerous in a way that feels… unpredictable. Like you never know when he’ll decide to strike, or how far he’ll go when he does.Alessandro’s grip jerks me closer, his chest pressing against my arm as if he’s trying to shield himself with me. My heart plummets. He doesn’t understand. He thinks Nico is just another boy in the school. But Nico is a Romano. A mafia heir. A son to the ruthless Mafia Don Lorenzo Romano. An
~ELENA~The whispers multiply until it feels like the entire hallway has turned into a low hum of excitement.“Who is he? Does anyone know?”“They say he is doing his masters.”“I heard he's transferred.”“Transferred? He looks like he walked straight out of a magazine.”“Do you think he has a girlfriend?”“I swear, if he so much as smiles at me, I’ll die right here.”I should have been focused on Alessandro, on his fingers biting into my skin, on the danger in his eyes….but the pull of the crowd’s awe is impossible to ignore.Everywhere I look, girls are leaning into each other, their cheeks flush their voices hush but desperate. They aren’t even pretending to pay attention to the scene Alessandro is making with me.Because Nico is walking toward us.My stepbrother. And none of them know it.Alessandro notices my distraction instantly. His grip on me tightens until it almost hurts. “Who are you staring at?” he demands, his tone dark and accusing. “Don’t yo
~ELENA~The first thought that enters my mind is to go tell my stepbrothers about Alessandro and how he's been a threat to my life in school.Without thinking, I walk straight to my door with shaky legs and walk out of the room.I head downstairs to the sitting room where I last saw them, but they are no longer there.Where are they??I search the gym, library, pool, and basketball court downstairs but they aren't there.Reluctantly, I ascend the stairs and return back to my room since I can't find my stepbrothers anywhere in the house and I didn't hear them come up to their rooms.***I can't sleep even after I have taken my bath to clear my head.I keep tossing around restlessly on the bed, the fear of Alessandro slowly taking over my whole body.Memories that I have forced into the back of my mind start to resurface.I remember how Alessandro punished me by locking me up inside my own room because he read my chats with a guy asking me to meet up with him in a
~ELENA~Just as I am about to climb the stairs to the rooftop, I hear a voice that isn't Alessandro call my name.“Elena!”I freeze. The voice is too familiar and before I even turn back, I know who it is. It's Valentina's.I take a deep breath and slowly turn back to see Valentina and Gianna staring daggers at me.“We're right after all. You're definitely up to something” Gianna speaks first, her voice laced with slight anger.“And that was why you stayed behind in school till this time. Weren't you scared of being alone in this big school and in the dark?” Valentina lashes out, with concern etched in her voice.I swallow hard.“You guys didn't go home?” I ask foolishly. “I thought you left.”“Yeah, you're literally forcing us to go home so you can be alone and carry out whatever you have in mind. We knew you're up to something, so we pretended to go back home and waited behind instead” Gianna roll her eyes.“What exactly are you hiding from us? What can't y
~ELENA~I push Alessandro away from me but he doesn't look good. Instead he drags me to the far end of the room, pinning me against the cold wall again.“Let me go” I beg with my eyes since his hand is still over my mouth. He opens his mouth to speak but is interrupted.A knock pounds at a door close to the room I am in. Gianna’s voice follows it immediately.“Elena! Are you in there?!”Alessandro turns toward the sound instinctively, his grip loosening just enough for his hand to leave my mouth. My gaze follows his movement… and freezes when his hand drifts to his belt.Oh, God. Is that…?A gun.I grab his arm without thinking. “Stop. Don’t do anything stupid. It’s just my friends.”Another knock.“Open up or I’m breaking it down!” Valentina yells now.Alessandro exhales heavily, like he's forcing himself to calm down. “We need to talk. Really talk. Tonight. The rooftop of the library building. Nine o'clock. Come alone” he tells me.“Elena!!” Gianna yells a
~ELENA~His mouth crashes against mine, hot and urgent, stealing the breath right out of my lungs.I push at him instinctively, but his body doesn’t budge… solid, immovable, like the wall behind me. It's like pressing against stone. His hands cage me in, one braced beside my head, the other gripping my hip with infuriating certainty. My palms, meant to shove him away, stay there and my fingers find the hard muscle beneath his shirt…. feeling the taut heat beneath his shirt, and for a dizzying second, my resistance falters and I can feel my resolve slipping through my fingers. The heat of him seeps through the thin fabric, creeping up my arms, making my head spin. His scent… that mix of cologne and something darker, something purely Alessandro, coils around me like smoke, intoxicating. His hand slides up my side, cupping the curve of my waist, and he presses closer, so close that there is barely any space between us . Every inch of me is caught between the
