Chapter Two: Five Years Later

The flight landed smoothly and Sarah gently shook her children awake. They had been sleeping through the entire journey, and now they stirred slowly, blinking against the light with drowsy, rumpled faces.

"Mummy, why do we have to come here?"

Adin asked, rubbing his eyes.

"Because Mummy has some unfinished business to take care of." Sarah smiled and smoothed his hair back.

Aria tugged at her sleeve, her little face forming a familiar pout. "Mummy, are we going to see Daddy here?"

Adin turned to his sister immediately, his drowsiness gone. "Shut up, Aria. Why are you so obsessed with having a dad? Isn't Mum enough for you?" He crossed his arms with the authority of an older brother. "Mum already told you Dad is gone, so stop bothering her."

Sarah’s expression softened as she listened to her son defend her. Five years ago, she had been naĆÆve enough to believe her stepsister when she claimed she knew who the father of her baby was. Not only had Sarah wasted nine months in that house, but she had also lost her third baby and ended up giving birth to twins.

Now, she had no interest in finding out who the man was.

She reached out and gently patted both children. ā€œIt’s okay, kids. Now grab your suitcases. Let’s get moving.ā€

The airport was busy and loud as they made their way through the crowd. Sarah pulled out her phone to call Madam Cassy and was so focused on dialing that she walked straight into something solid.

She stumbled back and looked up.

A tall man in a sleek black suit stood in front of her. His features were strikingly sharp; a straight nose, a firm jaw, and lips pressed into a thin line that suggested he was not particularly impressed with what had just happened.

"I'm sorry." Sarah steadied herself quickly. "I wasn't watching where I was going."

She looked at him again and immediately sensed the cold, unapproachable air surrounding him. She apologized once more to be safe. "I'm really sorry, sir. I was about to make a call and I wasn't paying attention."

Nathan said nothing at first. His sharp eyes moved from the woman in front of him and landed on the small boy standing beside her.

He stared.

The boy's face was striking. Those eyes in particular, they were almost identical to his own son's. The resemblance was unsettling in a way Nathan couldn't immediately explain.

Sarah noticed the direction of his gaze. Without a word she stepped in front of her children, pulling them gently behind her.

Nathan caught the movement and withdrew his eyes. "I apologize. It's nothing." He pushed the thought aside. The only woman he had ever been involved with was Emma, and she had given him a son. Whatever similarity he thought he saw was simply a coincidence not worth pursuing.

Sarah studied the man's face for a moment longer. Something about him tugged at her in a way she couldn't place. "Sir, have we met before? You look somewhat familiar."

Nathan looked at her.

Then he let out a short, cold laugh. "That kind of line is outdated. And frankly, you're not my type." With that, he turned and walked away without a second glance.

Sarah stood there feeling the secondhand embarrassment wash over her from head to toe. Of all the things to say to a complete stranger at an airport, why had she said that?

Aria's small voice broke through her thoughts. "Mummy." She tugged at Sarah's hand and tilted her head thoughtfully. "Did you notice? That uncle looked a lot like Adin."

Before Sarah could respond, Adin cut in sharply. "No he doesn't, Aria. Stop making things up."

Sarah looked between her two children for a brief moment, then gently ushered them forward. "It's okay, kids. Let's hurry up. Grandma Cassy is waiting for us."

Sarah had bought an apartment in Ocean City before coming back, a comfortable three bedroom place just enough for the four of them. After dropping off their luggage and settling in, they headed straight to Madam Cassy's house.

Five years ago, Madam Cassy had opened her door to a woman she didn't know, carrying two newborns in the middle of the night, looking like someone the world had completely broken apart. She had been frightened at first. But she had taken care of them all as if they were her own family.

After five months she had used her own connections to help Sarah leave the country safely with the children.

All these years they had kept in touch by phone, but now Sarah was back, and she had no intention of leaving Madam Cassy to live alone any longer.

She had already invited her to move in with them, and Madam Cassy had agreed with more happiness than she tried to show. She was in her seventies but strong and full of life, and the children adored her completely.

It was, as far as everyone was concerned, exactly how things were meant to be.

The next morning Sarah was pulled out of sleep by the sound of her phone ringing. She reached for it without opening her eyes and squinted at the screen.

Sophie.

She answered with a slightly rough voice. "What's going on?"

"Sarah!" Her best friend's voice came through bright and indignant. "You traveled back to your country and didn't even tell me?!"

Sarah's lips curved into a slow, relaxed smile. "I have some things to sort out. I'll be here for a while."

"Oh please." Sophie's tone turned knowing immediately. "If I'm not mistaken, you're there to represent the company for the collaboration with Reed's Corporation, aren't you."

"You're not mistaken," Sarah confirmed simply. "Several companies here have been trying to work with us for some time. The boss wants to expand into the local market so he sent me to assess things properly. We'll be holding a press conference soon to officially announce our entry."

Sophie let out a long, impressed breath. "Sarah, if people find out you're the chief designer behind the international fashion company, every local brand in that country is going to come knocking on your door."

She was right, and they both knew it. Collaborating with an international fashion company meant direct access to the global market, it was the kind of opportunity that could transform a local brand overnight.

It was no secret that Nathan Reed had made several attempts over the years to secure exactly this kind of partnership, only to be met with polite but firm rejections each time.

The Reed family had originally built their name in real estate before making an unexpected move into the clothing industry, and in just five years they had grown into the most prominent fashion brand in the country. But their reach stopped at the border, and they knew it.

This time, according to what Sophie had heard through various channels, Nathan Reed was prepared to do whatever it took to secure a deal. She hadn't mentioned this to Sarah yet, it was still unconfirmed.

"That's exactly why my identity needs to stay quiet for now," Sarah said. "I don't want anyone knowing I'm the chief designer before we officially announce who we're partnering with."

"Understood. I'll make sure the team knows." Sophie paused, then added in a lighter voice, "And Sarah? Try not to cause too much trouble while you're back."

NATHANEventually, Nathan glanced at his watch again and silently cursed the meetings that had been waiting for him since morning. If not for work, he wasn't sure he would even be thinking about leaving. The realization alone made him frown slightly. Since when has he become so comfortable sitting in someone else's house and listening to children's voices? He pushed the strange thought aside and stood up, causing Sarah to look up from her tea."Leaving already?" she asked with a faint smile.Nathan nodded and reached for his coat. "I've delayed enough meetings."Sarah smiled helplessly. "Mr. Reed, thank you for bringing Alex over. You don't have to pick him up today. The kids have been asking for him since yesterday, and I think they'll refuse to let him go now."Nathan's eyes instinctively drifted upstairs where the sound of laughter occasionally reached them. Alex had never laughed so much in the Reed mansion. In fact, the boy hardly spoke there. Yet after meeting Sarah and her chil

The dining room, which was usually quiet, had somehow become unusually lively.Aria and Alex sat side by side, arguing passionately over who had received the bigger pancake, while Adin sat between them with a helpless expression on his little face, trying his best to act like the mature one among the three."Mummy, Brother Alex stole mine!" Aria complained with puffed cheeks, pointing accusingly at the culprit beside her.Alex immediately widened his eyes in disbelief."No, I didn't! Grandma Cassy gave me this one!""You're lying!""I'm not!"Seeing another war about to break out over breakfast, Sarah shook her head helplessly and was about to intervene when a deep voice cut through the noise."Eat properly."Nathan's tone wasn't loud, yet the effect was immediate.Alex obediently lowered his head and resumed eating, while even Aria blinked her large eyes and quietly picked up her fork again as though nothing had happened.Adin stared at Nathan with admiration written all over his lit

Sarah froze.Standing outside her villa, one big and one small, were Nathan and Alex. Before she could even react, Alex broke free from his father's side and threw himself into her arms happily."Mummy!"Sarah almost lost her balance before she steadied herself and hugged the little boy."Alex." She smiled helplessly and pinched his cheek lightly. "Didn't I tell you not to call me that?""But you're Mummy." Alex blinked innocently. "Aria and Adin call you Mummy too."Sarah could only laugh helplessly.Only then did she lift her eyes and meet Nathan's gaze.Nathan stood quietly beside them, dressed in a black suit. His face was as expressionless as ever, but the moment he heard his son call Sarah "Mummy," the corners of his lips twitched slightly. No matter how many times he heard it, he still found it absurd. Yet strangely, he no longer felt the urge to correct him.Instead, his eyes unconsciously fell on Sarah's tired face. Her eyes looked sleepy, and there were faint dark circles be

The next morning when Sarah woke up to her ringing tone, she sluggishly picked up the phone, and it was Sophie, her best friend.Sarah, are you still sleeping? She asked her playfully. So are you ready for tomorrow? Sophie asked. Because I can't wait to see their faces turn sour.Sarah also laughed, Oh yes since they like drama let's give them whatever they want.So has Nathan said anything from it? She asked carefully. ā€œYes, yesterday he helped me and asked why I'm so quiet after what's buzzing online?ā€ She replied knowing that Sophie wouldn't stop asking so she tried changing the topic.Does Mrs Reed still come to the office? To make noise? She asked carefully. And Sophie burst out laughing? Oh that woman is really a fire. I know all this is your Stepsisters doing, Sarah they are trying everything possible to see you behind bars.Of course Emma would do anything she wants and likes to make sure I spend the rest of my life there and I am more than welcome to see her face tomorrow th

Sarah immediately became alert, her eyes fixed on Harry Luke as she said, "Mr. Nathan my house is a bit messy, and it's not convenient for guests. It's getting late, so you should probably head back."Nathan chuckled, no it's not a problem I just want to say hi to the kids."Sarah's expression didn't change but she knew that with madam Cassy and the kids at home, Nathan wouldn’t try anything, even if he had any mischievous intentions. Still, something about Nathan's earlier words in the car made her feel he wasn't entirely trustworthy. She quietly opened the door, and sure enough, the kids were already playing together. Hearing the noise at the door, the two children ran over, clinging to Sarah's pants.Aria was hugging her leg and sweetly calling, "Mommy." He looked like a little puppy, just missing a wagging tail.Hey you all should say hi to uncle Nathan, Hi uncle, both of them greeted him.He scorched their height. Hi, how are you both doing? He asked, smiling wildly.ā€œUncle, wher

Sarah felt extremely uncomfortable with Nathan words. She paused, her expression distant, and said, "Brother-in-law, you really know how to joke. Are you trying to stage a scandal? Sorry, I'm not into that kind of drama!"Hearing Sarah call him brother-in-law, Nathan face darkened slightly. Wondering if she hated him that much. He clasped his hands together, his fingers twitching a bit. After a moment, he asked with a serious expression, "The court date is in a couple of days, and the evidence is almost conclusive. Ms. Irish, do you have a plan to get out of this unscathed?"Sarah settled back into her seat. Despite sitting on opposite sides of the cramped car, the space felt tight. She raised her eyes and asked, "I gave Mrs. Reed a plagiarized script. With that alone, Mr. Nathan shouldn't be on my side, right?""At the press conference, Ms. Ives clearly stated her intention to collaborate with the Reeds Group. Now that this has happened, do you think Mr. Nathan can just stand by and
