Roshni

Today I told Junior that I wouldn't be taking lunch outside of the shop because the shop was very busy and that he shouldn’t come get me. On the contrary, the shop was very quiet.

I spent the day damp dusting all the shelves and repacking the stock neatly. I didn’t mean to be avoiding Junior but ever since he mentioned telling his parents about us, I’ve been scared. I don’t want to lose him. Not that ignoring him was helping me not lose him but at least it was giving me the space I needed to figure out what I would do.

The way I saw it, Mr. Karan would never agree to Junior and I being together unless he developed dementia and forgot who I was. What were the chances of him developing dementia though?

PreetahI finished writing and sat up to reread what I had written:I see your anger. It bursts out every time you don’t even try.You rarely smile but when you do, that smile can quickly turn to anger. You want to be heard. You want to make your point, and you want me to listen to you.You are right and I am wrong.Your voice is the loudest. You think it has to be, to reinforce your point. You raise your voice every day and blame me every day.

ArthaShit. Blocking him on all socials and avoiding work for a week only to run straight into him like this. I could feel my pulse hammer against my skin. I wanted to run away but my feet wouldn’t listen to me. I felt trapped under his stare. Dean looked torn, desperate, worse than he looked the last time I saw him. Why was he just staring at me? This was too much. If I didn’t leave now I would end up crying. Crying because seeing him felt like a knife through my back again, and also because he… he looked so torn. I turned away to leave when I felt him tug my arm back, and close the door with a loud bang. The files in my hands fell to the floor.“What are you doing?” I tried to control my tone and pitch. I was mad. Why would he grab my arm like that? And the loud slam? I am pretty sure people heard it. “Let me go, now.”He let go of my hand and took a step back, as if coming to his senses or something. “Artha, I need you. You can’t leave me.”“I think I already did.” Who does he thi

RoshniAfter emptying my stomach into the toilet of a restaurant I would have never visited out of my own will, I locked the stall. What is wrong with this woman? How can she ask me that?I tapped my pockets for my phone and got a mini heart attack after discovering it's not on me. But then I can breathe again after remembering I had left it at the table with Junior.I needed to check my calendar — yes, I keep track of my periods. Why I still do it, I don't know, especially knowing that there was absolutely no point.I stood up with my hands on my waist, I felt much better. I left the stall and avoided the woman's watchful eye. She looked around my age and here she was thinking she knew any better.I rinsed my mouth, dried my face and then left.“You okay?” Junior stood up when I reached the wooden table.I nodded. “I guess I still don't like sushi.”He nodded, his mouth in a hard line. “Noted. Never again.”I gave him a small smile and extended my hands on the table, he immediately t

One week later Arjun “Another company calling for your wife.” Elza's blonde head popped around my door. I exchanged looks with Artha, sitting opposite me. “So?” I answered. “What shall I tell them?” “The same thing you told the last three.” “You sure? This one is Fordham university.” I looked up, giving Elza an exasperated stare. “Sure.” She answered and left. “What was that?” Artha's eyes widened. I closed the folder in front of me and slid it across the table with both hands. “You can proceed with your one-week pile of work.” “What does Fordham Uni want with Preetah?” She looked excited. A few minutes ago, she was clear about her reluctance to be here, now her face was beaming expectantly. I shrugged. “I have a meeting in ten minutes.” I glanced at my watch. “Arjun.” Her face suddenly fell. “Answer me.” “There's nothing to answer, it's not even important.” I got up, doing the button of my suit jacket. She frowned, giving me a suspicious look. “Okay...” “Now if you

Preetah We turned around and saw Steve in a white t-shirt and black sweatpants. I was so used to seeing him in his formal clothes that for a second it felt like I was staring at a stranger in our front yard. Still, my heart relaxed just a little. “Ma'am.” He beckoned. “The young lady needed a lift back home, so I gave her one.” The officer informed us. “You should be careful being outside at these times, Miss Kimti.” Who is that? Artha and I exchanged looks. “Thank you for bringing her home safely.” I told the officer. “Good night.” He then turned to Artha, “Stay safe.” She nodded, avoiding eye contact with him. I placed an arm around Artha's shoulders, and we walked inside. “Where’s Arjun?” She asked me. “In the room, sleeping.” “Please don't tell Arjun anything about this.” Artha told Steve. He looked confused but managed something that looked like a nod. Steve closed the gate with his remote as we made it into the house. Artha slowly closed the front door, grimacing
