Preetah

I finished writing and sat up to reread what I had written:

I see your anger.

It bursts out every time you don’t even try.

You rarely smile but when you do, that smile can quickly turn to anger.

You want to be heard.

You want to make your point, and you want me to listen to you.

You are right and I am wrong.

Your voice is the loudest. You think it has to be, to reinforce your point.

You raise your voice every day and blame me every day.

  • Trophy Wife   59– No other guy

Dean“Hello, everyone.” I greeted when I got close. No one answered, except Preetah, with a weak wave.I had been to this house a million times before but today I felt like I needed an invitation to sit down.“Hi, Dean.” Arjun said, after what felt like forever. “Arent you gonna sit?” Something was off about him. I saw this look on him when he spoke to the other employees at the office – an emotionless cold expression.I sat down on the next couch and waited for them to lead.“I thought you’d come with Artha…” His words lingered in the room even after they were said.I felt so uncomfortable, this was not the conversation I should be having with my best friend. For sure he was disappointed in me. I let him down.“I…” I wanted to speak but the words felt stuck in my throat. I couldn't even look them in the eyes.“Why would you pick my sister up at midnight?” Arjun asked. “And don’t try to deny it because we checked the cameras, it was your car, Dean.”I tapped my foot vigorously, bitin

  • Trophy Wife   58– No way back

Dean“At home, why?”The other side went quiet. Every silent second that passed felt like the room was losing more and more oxygen.“Because Artha is not home.” He said. “She hasn’t been since midnight. Has she told you anything about where she’d be?”If he knew Artha and I were together, then this was just a question to trap me. But if he didn’t then why would he be asking me? Why me?But I had to give some response, fast.“Hello?” He asked.“I – don’t know what to say… Do you think she’s okay?”Silence.Shit. Clearly I chose the wrong response.

  • Trophy Wife   57– Static

ArjunThe hairs on my arms shot up, it was either the cold air slapping against my skin or Steve’s blabber.“She was in her nightgown. I – I didn't think she was actually going anywhere.” He continued. “I even asked if I could drive her and she told me to act like I didn’t see her.”“And you didn’t think to tell me?”He shook his head slightly, fidgeting with his hands as if they were itchy.I couldn’t believe the adults in this house.I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Steve.” The word carried everything I wasn’t saying.“I am so sorry, sir.” He tried. “Nex

  • Trophy Wife   56– Shit. Shit. Shit.

Artha“Dad… you’re making her nervous.”Nervous? No, no, how about scaring me to death? That’s when Raymond’s face lit up like the lamp next to him. God, who would have thought? His green eyes narrowed and the lines on his face creased up more as he smiled from ear to ear. He took my hand and shook it with so much vigor.“Did I scare you?” He laughed.I blinked. What? I looked to Dean, he had a small smile. I could breathe again.Phew! I placed a hand over my heart.“Sorry.” Raymond grinned and then got up. He placed a heavy arm around me and walked me back to his son. “So you’re

Artha“Now that we know Preetah is going to cover for me, I am gonna switch my phone off.” I smiled. “Cool?”He moved his head side to side. Although looking unsure, he nodded. “Sure...”After turning it off, I gave Dean my cutest smile but he didn’t smile back. Instead, he looked distracted, deep in thought. His fingers tapped restlessly on his knee. Was he like this because we almost got caught, or was it something else? Perhaps the reason he was acting strange today?Whatever it was, this was my first time sneaking out – we had to make the most of it.“Stop!” I nudged him, trying to steal him away from his thoughts. “Give me a big smile. Please?”He looked at me, clicked his tongue and then pressed his lips in a hard line. Ahg. ★★★PreetahArjun shook his head impatiently. “She’s not answering!”I stayed put. “Call her and talk to her.” He came up to me. “Act like everything is fine. Find out where she is and who she’s with at this time.”My heart stopped. That was literally setti

  • Trophy Wife   54– Cover for me

Artha“Shit. Preetah saw me.”“Should we go back?”That would suck. Tonight was supposed to be special. Besides, I was sure Preetah wouldn’t rat me out. Right?“Preetah is cool. She wouldn’t tell Arjun.” I tried to sound confident even with the ping of doubt creeping in. I shrugged, texting back. “I am just gonna ask her to cover for me.”“Wait.” Dean placed his hand on my forearm. “Are you sure that’s a good idea? What if she tells Arjun?”I shook my head. I trusted Preetah enough to have my back. She was the type to put others before herself. Right? Shit…
