Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
He furrowed his brows tightly, clearly not believing a word I said.

"Ruth, do you even believe yourself? All these years, you've clung to me like a dog, shamelessly trying to get in bed with me. Now that my family's on the verge of bankruptcy, your snobbish parents are trying to force me into marriage with a business deal. Do you really expect me to believe you'd actually give up this child?"

His words dripped with contempt and disgust, wrapping around me like a choking fog. I blinked hard, forcing back the tears in my eyes.

All I felt was regret. Regret for the ten years I wasted on someone like Richard. He never deserved my kindness.

Noticing my silence, Richard assumed he had hit the mark. His expression turned colder still.

"Your family is nothing but a bunch of greedy scum. You make me sick!"

I knew why Richard didn't believe me. In my past life, I had indeed degraded myself to the point of disgrace.

I had even knelt before him, begging him to marry me, threatening to expose him to the media if he didn't take responsibility for my unborn child.

I told him that if he abandoned me, the Reynold family would never rise again.

Under that unbearable pressure, Richard eventually gave in and agreed to marry me.

But the price I paid was horrific.

Three years into that marriage, he drove my parents to their deaths.

And then, he drowned me and our three-year-old son with his own hands.

Now, given a second chance, I would never let history repeat itself.

Empowered by the thought, I reached for the coffee mug on the cabinet behind me and smashed it.

It was the thing he cherished the most: a mug Elise had given him.

He used it every single day to make coffee.

Seeing how it shattered to pieces by my hand, Richard exploded in fury.

"You're asking for it!"

He lunged at me, his hand closing tightly around my throat, his bloodshot eyes brimming with murderous rage.

He slammed me back into the cold, hard wall. Pain shot through my lower back, and a dull ache spread across my abdomen, deep and pulling, like something was about to fall apart inside me.

Then his furious voice roared in my ears.

"Ruth, the only one I've ever loved is Ellie. Even if you trap me in a marriage with pregnancy, I will never love you!"

Hearing those words, I suddenly laughed.

Of course. He would never love me.

I shoved Richard away with all my strength.

Then, from my pocket, I pulled out a bottle of abortion pills.

I had gotten them right after my hospital visit. In my past life, I couldn't bring myself to take them because my love for Richard ran too deep.

But now? All I felt toward him was disgust and hatred.

There was no reason for this child to come into a world like this, into a life filled with pain.

"Richard, I'll grant you the freedom to love Elise all you want. From this moment on, you and I are finished."

As I said it, I opened the bottle while he stood frozen in shock.

One by one, I swallowed the pills right in front of him.

I wasn't sure if one would be enough, so I took the whole bottle.

A sharp, twisting pain tore through my lower abdomen almost instantly.

Warm liquid gushed from between my legs.

A moment later, my entire body went limp, and darkness swallowed me whole.

Half a year later, the film I invested in premiered. And just as I had expected, it was a huge success. At the awards ceremony, just before walking the red carpet, I unexpectedly spotted Elise among a crowd of actresses. But this time, she had tagged along with the crew of a recently popular web series. Gone was the pure, innocent look of the past. Her entire face had clearly been cosmetically altered, and even her chest bore signs of surgical enhancements. She tried to approach me to make connections, but my assistant stopped her cold. The red carpet began, and everything proceeded in perfect order. Elise, standing under the flashbulbs, looked completely enraptured, unable to hide her delight. Thanks to that web drama, she had gained nearly a hundred thousand new followers. That meant she was one step closer to her dream of becoming a star. That night, the film I backed won Best Picture, just like I'd hoped. As I unlocked my phone to interact with my colleagues onlin

The banquet that day went smoothly overall. The Sanders family secured several new projects, and I was so busy I barely touched the ground, flying all over the country. It wasn't until half a month later that I heard the aftermath from Suzie. "That scene caused such a mess. Elise didn't get the second female lead role. She got so mad she moved out of the small apartment Richard rented for her." Suzie sipped her iced tea, lounging comfortably on the chaise lounge. She casually opened the hand cream I brought her from Crefan and applied it, her eyes sparkling with gossip-fueled excitement. "But she didn't break up with Richard. That guy really loves her. He knows his 'true love' is a gold digger and still works himself to the bone just to buy her those luxury things she likes." I replied to a client message and said offhandedly, "What else could he do? Admit he was an idiot all along?" Suzie burst into loud laughter. Then, remembering something, she sent me a few photos

Richard's chauvinistic mindset kicked in. His face darkened as he stepped forward to shield Elise behind him. "Don't make things hard for a young woman," he said coldly. The investor chuckled and immediately changed his target. "Fine. Then you drink it." Richard froze, not even having time to respond before the girl he had spent his life protecting spoke up sweetly behind him. "Richie, help me tank this bottle, okay? You know how much I've always dreamed of becoming an actress…" Her voice trembled by the end, as if she were about to cry. That delicate, pitiful look could melt hearts. I nearly laughed out loud. Where had I heard this before? Ah, yes, seven years ago. That was when Elise had just moved into their villa. She had said the exact same thing to Richard. Back then, her "dream" was to become a cellist. Richard had believed her. So much so that he endured being punished by his father to be on his knees for three days and nights just to have her move into thei

  • True Love Be Damned   Chapter 7

A week before the Sanders family banquet, I sent invitations to all the influential people I knew. Even the Reynold family got one. Suzie had snuck it in when I wasn't looking. She had loved over-the-top drama since we were kids, especially scenes full of juicy fights and chaos. When I found out, I couldn't be bothered to stop her. Anyway, knowing Richard's macho pride, I figured he wouldn't show up. Much to my surprise, he did. During the banquet, while I was surrounded by people offering toasts, I caught a glimpse of him hesitantly stepping through the grand entrance. We hadn't seen each other in over a month, but he looked noticeably more worn out. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, and even the suit he was wearing looked ill-fitting. It looked like… a rental suit? Stripped of his trust-fund baby status, he now seemed shrunken and uneasy, like someone finally realizing he no longer belonged in this world. In stark contrast, Elise beside him was still decked out in ful

Later, word spread that Richard maxed out his credit cards just to buy his little Ellie a diamond ring. But the one he bought was only 1/20 the carat weight of the pink diamond I had custom-made. The store manager told me Elise's face at the time was absolutely awful. However, she did forced a smile for the sake of Richard's pride. Then, the very next day, fully covering her face, she came back to the store wearing that same ring. She said she wanted to return it, but not back to Richard's account. She wanted the refund sent directly to her. The manager, following my instructions, naturally refused her request. Elise was furious but didn't dare cause a scene. Still, she was shameless enough to keep pestering. After much wheedling and pressure, the manager, worried she'd affect other customers, discreetly contacted me for help. At the time, I had already been discharged from the hospital and was enjoying a spa day with Suzie Blanche, one of the top socialites. When I h

My dad practically shouted the last few words. Richard's expression shifted slightly, but he didn't show a hint of fear. I wasn't surprised at all. Whether in my past life or this one, he had never known what it meant to be poor. So, in his eyes, running a company was no big deal. "I hope Mr. Sanders keeps his word," Richard said with his chin raised high, arrogance gleaming in his eyes. "I won't be holding back either when it comes to competition between our businesses." With that, he turned and gently took Elise's hand, his tone tender and full of affection. "Ellie, from now on, I'm all yours." Elise was no fool. If she had been, she wouldn't have just subtly alienated me while never actually convincing Richard to break things off outright. Now that the Sanders family's financial support was gone, the Reynold family was bound to collapse. But right now, Elise couldn't say a word. She forced a smile, her delicately maintained face showing nothing but admiration and
