Chapter 2

Author: Snail
"Do it," Damiano commanded.

Following his order, the team of researchers moved in on me instantly.

The cold, heavy metal helmet was clamped down over my head, and multiple fine sensor needles were driven against my temples and the base of my neck.

My body trembled as I struggled against the restraints.

"Don't do this, Damiano. Please, stop…"

But the next second, a massive surge of electrical current tore through me, and I screamed.

It felt as though someone had taken a blade and split my skull right down the center. My ears rang with a deafening screech of static, and a violent spasm seized my stomach.

"My stomach… Damiano, I'm really pregnant," I cried as I begged him.

Alas, the only response from the bystanders was a wave of callous whispers.

"She's still playing the victim. She actually faked being pregnant just to dodge the interrogation."

"No wonder she managed to string Don Caruso along for a whole year."

Damiano stood before the platform, his hands clenching into tight fists at his sides. As he looked down at my bloodless face, a flicker of conflict crossed his eyes.

"Hold on a second," he said.

The moment the researchers stopped, Teresa rushed forward, her eyes red with fury. "Damiano, are you seriously getting cold feet again? We still don't know whether Caterina is dead or alive. Meanwhile, she's survived this entire year by crying wolf and playing innocent!

"The machine barely started, and right on cue, she's screaming about pain and a pregnancy. If you fall for her lies now, what happens to Caterina?"

Damiano hesitated once more. He looked at me, and I met his gaze through my tears.

In the past, he would've given in at the mere sight of my tears. But this time, he closed his eyes, his voice cold and unyielding.

"Resume the extraction."

My heart broke right then and there.

A second later, a far more intense wave of current tore through me, forcing my body to arch against the restraints. It felt as if my stomach was being violently torn apart.

Blood began to seep down my leg, but nobody in that room cared.

Every single eye was glued to the massive projection screen in the center of the chamber.

My memories came out in fragments. The images flickered before finally locking onto a memory from a dinner party shortly after I married into the Caruso family.

Back then, I was still completely out of my depth with the family's rules. Several women from the extended branches of the family had cornered me in front of everyone, smiling as they forced me to down a glass of wine.

"Come on, Bianca. Surely, you're not refusing us over a drink, are you? Or is it that girls from modest backgrounds don't understand how things work around here?"

Everyone had circled to enjoy the spectacle, while I stood frozen, my face pale.

That was when Caterina Caruso marched over in her high heels, took the glass from my hand, and looked at those women.

"Bianca can't hold her liquor, so why are you trying to get her drunk? Besides, my brother chose her himself. Anyone who disrespects her is disrespecting my brother."

The women immediately went quiet as Caterina gave me a reassuring wink. "Don't pay them any mind, Bianca. As long as I'm around, nobody is going to mess with you."

Seeing Caterina vibrant and full of life on the screen, Teresa finally broke into sobs. "My sweet Caterina…"

Everyone in the room knew that while Caterina could be spoiled and arrogant, she had always been fiercely protective of me in front of outsiders.

The screen changed, jumping to another memory.

It was my very first time sitting in on a family council. I had been so nervous that I brought the wrong files, and several elders scolded me right then and there.

At the eleventh hour, Caterina had burst through the doors, clutching the correct documents.

"I'm so sorry, everyone. I packed the wrong files. It wasn't Bianca's fault. Please don't take it out on her."

She took the fall herself, then wrapped her arm tightly around mine with a playful smile. "Bianca, you're not mad at me, are you? Damiano cherishes you like a literal treasure. If he finds out I got you yelled at by the elders, I'm done for."

When the memory ended, the screen went dark, but the council chamber erupted.

"Look at how incredibly nice Ms. Caruso was to her! And yet, she held onto the leads regarding her disappearance for a whole year without saying a word!"

"How dare an ungrateful leech like her have the nerve to pretend to be innocent?"

The truth didn't die with me, and the real hell was only just beginning.Three days after my death, the elders secretly retrieved all the backup surveillance footage from Christmas night.Emilio thought that once the surveillance footage had been scrubbed clean, every trace of his crime would vanish with it. He had forgotten that in a mafia family like the Caruso family, a secondary, entirely independent backup system always ran in secret to prevent an internal betrayal. No one knew that only the elders had access to it.The day the footage was restored, a heavy, suffocating silence fell over the Consiglio dei Vecchi. On screen, Emilio was seen walking into the back wing late at night. Hours later, he walked back out, his clothing completely disheveled. At that moment, the truth was all but laid bare. When Teresa saw the footage, she let out a chilling shriek. She lunged forward, clawing at Emilio's face until it was a bloody mess."You bastard! We raised her as our own! How co

Damiano rushed toward me in terror, shouting at the researchers, "What are you waiting for? Get that thing off her!"Only then did the researchers snap out of their daze. They scrambled to shut down the machine, and the moment the helmet was removed, my body went limp, blood dripping from the judgment chair.Damiano's eyes widened. He lunged forward and caught me in his arms."Get a doctor over here now!"The secret council chamber fell into chaos.A team of healthcare providers rushed through the doors, and the moment they saw my condition, their faces turned a ghastly shade of white."How did she lose this much blood? Prepare for resuscitation!""Her vitals are plummeting!"After checking my condition, the doctors moved quickly to save me. Suddenly, one of the female doctors looked up at everyone, shock flickering in her eyes."Are you people completely insane? She's pregnant! You subjected a pregnant woman to neural extraction? This is literal torture!"Damiano's expressio

My body was already so weak that I couldn't withstand Teresa's slap. Blood began to trickle from the corner of my mouth, and the judgment chair beneath me was already stained red.Even so, Teresa looked right through it and demanded, "Say something! This is all fake, isn't it? The baby has to be Damiano's! I knew you were trouble from the start. When Damiano insisted on marrying you, I should've fought tooth and nail to stop him."I slowly let my eyelids fall. Feeling my life slipping away, I no longer had the energy to argue. In my memory, Caterina was sobbing hysterically. "Bianca, I don't know how it ended up like this. I only wanted Damiano to fall for me. I never, ever thought it would turn out like this…"At that point, Caterina no longer looked like the spoiled, arrogant girl everyone knew. She looked like a thoroughly devastated little girl, curled into a ball in the corner of the couch, clutching her knees as her entire frame shook violently. She had discovered she was pr

On screen, my face was as pale as a sheet. It seemed as if every ounce of strength had been drained from my body."So… you're carrying Damiano's baby right now?" I asked.Caterina kept her head lowered, not uttering a word.Gradually, my eyes welled up with tears, and every single breath felt labored. "Haven't you been trying to usurp my place? Now that you've finally gotten yourself pregnant with his child, why are you begging me to smuggle you out?"Shouldn't you be throwing a party while you kick me out of the Caruso family for good?"She didn't seem to hear a word of my interrogation. After a heavy silence, she finally parted her lips and said, "On Christmas Day, I slipped something into Damiano's drink. I paid off his doctor ahead of time and had the drug mixed into the wine he usually drank."I even prepped the bedroom in advance. I disabled the security cameras and sent the housekeepers away…"Tears streamed down her cheeks, but she burst into a fit of laughter that was

Damiano's words plunged the council chamber into a brief, suffocating silence. It took Teresa several seconds to snap out of her daze before shooting to her feet."Damiano, Caterina went to such extremes for you! She even had the guts to drug you," she bellowed. "Now that she's fallen pregnant, you think you can just wash your hands clean of her by saying the baby isn't yours?"Damiano's expression darkened. "Mother, I said I never touched her."Teresa let out a bitter chuckle, her eyes rimmed red. "Then, where did the baby come from? Do you really think a girl would destroy her own reputation with a lie like that?"The entire council chamber remained dead silent. Teresa, however, seemed to have reached the end of her restraint."If you hadn't dug your heels in back then, I never would've accepted Bianca as my daughter-in-law. A stranger can never compare to Caterina, whose background we know inside and out."Caterina grew up right here in the Caruso residence. She knows the rul

In the memory, I stood before Caterina as my heart slowly sank."Caterina, tell me who the father is first," I said, doing my best to keep my voice steady.Caterina snapped her head up, her bloodshot eyes flickering with resistance. "Stop asking!"Wrought with panic, she grabbed me. "Bianca, you have to help me! Just get me away from this family, and I'll never show my face to any of you again! Please, I'm begging you!"Her nails dug painfully into my skin, but my anxiety only spiked. The more frantic she became, the more it proved that the truth was a skeleton in the closet that could never see the light of day.I took a deep breath and forced her hands off of me."Caterina, it's not that I don't want to help. But you've never liked me, have you? You've always claimed I was the one who stole your brother from you. You hate me, and you wish I would leave the family."And now, when something this catastrophic hits the fan, you refuse to tell me anything and expect me to help yo
