Chapter 3

Author: Snail
A shrill alarm tore through the chamber, and the researcher monitoring my vitals instantly went pale.

"The subject's brain waves are abnormal. Her vitals are tanking!"

The head researcher pulled off his headset, panic creeping into his voice.

"Her body can't handle a memory extraction of that level. If we force this sequence any further, it's going to cause permanent, irreversible brain damage!"

Teresa threw herself at me like a madwoman. "Bianca, where on earth is Caterina? Tell us! Do you actually want her to die out there?"

She struck me across the face over and over again. Blood pooled at the corner of my mouth, and my vision dimmed.

The truth rose to the tip of my tongue, but I forced the words back down my throat as I offered a desperate plea. "I can't tell you… Please don't make me!"

Damiano's eyes remained locked on mine, filled with a mix of betrayal, disappointment, and an almost pathological obsession.

"Bianca, this is your final chance. If you won't say it yourself, I'll see it with my own eyes."

A chill washed over me, and I shook my head frantically. "Damiano, just let it go! Finding out the truth won't do anyone any good!"

Nevertheless, Damiano stepped onto the platform, walking right up to me. "Let it go? That's my sister! How do you expect me to just let it go?"

When he realized that I wasn't going to speak, the last trace of mercy in his eyes vanished.

"Keep the machine running until we see the truth!" he demanded.

An even stronger electric current hit my brain as a blood-curdling scream tore out of my throat.

The massive projection screen flickered to life all over again.

In my memory, Caterina had deliberately spilled red wine over her dress, weeping as she turned to look at Damiano.

"Bianca, I was only trying to stand up for you… Why do you hate me so much?"

Damiano had frowned and pulled her behind him.

The scene cut again.

This time, Caterina was wrapping her arm sweetly around mine with a sweet, innocent smile, only to pitch herself backward down the staircase a second later.

When everyone rushed to the scene, she looked at Damiano with tear-filled eyes.

"Damiano, this isn't Bianca's fault… I just lost my footing…"

In the final memory, Caterina was standing in my bedroom. Gone was her usual sweet, innocent persona. She glared at me, her eyes flickering with jealousy and crazed obsession.

"Bianca, you need to leave Damiano. Ever since we were kids, I've been the only girl allowed by his side. If you hadn't barged into our lives, he never would've married anyone else."

Pale-faced, I looked at her and said, "Caterina, you've lost your mind! You're the Caruso family's adoptive daughter. You and Damiano can't be together!"

But Caterina only locked her manic gaze onto me. "Why is it impossible? As long as you leave, Damiano will return to me eventually."

The memory cut off there, and the entire council chamber exploded.

"Ms. Caruso was actually in love with Don Caruso?"

"How could she even harbor a thought like that?"

Damiano stood rooted to his spot.

Pushing past her initial shock, Teresa ground her teeth together and snarled, "Caterina was just young! She grew up trailing right behind Damiano. Of course, she'd be attached to him!"

"She isn't blood-related anyway," Emilio added sternly. "If she made a mistake, we can discipline her and fix it later. Right now, our only priority is locating her."

After saying that, he ordered sternly, "Don't stop that machine! I want to see exactly how deep she buried the rest of this memory!"

In the next second, I desperately gasped for air like a fish out of water as the machine forced my heart rate back up.

The memory I had kept buried in the deepest recesses of my mind was violently dragged out into the open.

"No! I'm begging you, make it stop!"

"Look! That's the final scene before Caterina went missing. She really does know where Caterina is!"

Amid the collective gasps of the crowd, the secret I had hidden for so long finally came to light, displayed for all to see.

Caterina burst into my bedroom, pale as a sheet and shaking like a leaf.

"Bianca, you have to save me… I'm begging you. You're the only one who can help me…"

On screen, my own voice shook as I asked, "What happened?"

Tears streamed down Caterina's face as her hand instinctively moved to shield her stomach. "I'm pregnant, but I can't have this baby. Bianca, I have to leave right now. Please help me!"

"Why? Who's the father of your baby?" I asked.

The scene fell into a heavy silence.

Caterina kept her head lowered, her shoulders heaving violently. Finally, she whispered a single name.

At that moment, the entire council chamber erupted in horror.

"How is that possible?"

"This is insane… This is absolutely insane!"

The color drained from Teresa's face as she staggered backward. Meanwhile, the glass in Emilio's hand shattered with a crack as he crushed it with his bare fist.

As for Damiano, he stared at the screen as if he couldn't believe what he had just heard. He looked completely shattered.

My consciousness began to blur as blood kept streaming down my legs. Deep down, I knew that my baby was gone.

With what little strength I had left, I lifted my eyes and looked at Damiano, his face darker than I had ever seen it.

This was the truth he was so desperate to find.

I sure hoped he was happy now.

The truth didn't die with me, and the real hell was only just beginning.Three days after my death, the elders secretly retrieved all the backup surveillance footage from Christmas night.Emilio thought that once the surveillance footage had been scrubbed clean, every trace of his crime would vanish with it. He had forgotten that in a mafia family like the Caruso family, a secondary, entirely independent backup system always ran in secret to prevent an internal betrayal. No one knew that only the elders had access to it.The day the footage was restored, a heavy, suffocating silence fell over the Consiglio dei Vecchi. On screen, Emilio was seen walking into the back wing late at night. Hours later, he walked back out, his clothing completely disheveled. At that moment, the truth was all but laid bare. When Teresa saw the footage, she let out a chilling shriek. She lunged forward, clawing at Emilio's face until it was a bloody mess."You bastard! We raised her as our own! How co

Damiano rushed toward me in terror, shouting at the researchers, "What are you waiting for? Get that thing off her!"Only then did the researchers snap out of their daze. They scrambled to shut down the machine, and the moment the helmet was removed, my body went limp, blood dripping from the judgment chair.Damiano's eyes widened. He lunged forward and caught me in his arms."Get a doctor over here now!"The secret council chamber fell into chaos.A team of healthcare providers rushed through the doors, and the moment they saw my condition, their faces turned a ghastly shade of white."How did she lose this much blood? Prepare for resuscitation!""Her vitals are plummeting!"After checking my condition, the doctors moved quickly to save me. Suddenly, one of the female doctors looked up at everyone, shock flickering in her eyes."Are you people completely insane? She's pregnant! You subjected a pregnant woman to neural extraction? This is literal torture!"Damiano's expressio

My body was already so weak that I couldn't withstand Teresa's slap. Blood began to trickle from the corner of my mouth, and the judgment chair beneath me was already stained red.Even so, Teresa looked right through it and demanded, "Say something! This is all fake, isn't it? The baby has to be Damiano's! I knew you were trouble from the start. When Damiano insisted on marrying you, I should've fought tooth and nail to stop him."I slowly let my eyelids fall. Feeling my life slipping away, I no longer had the energy to argue. In my memory, Caterina was sobbing hysterically. "Bianca, I don't know how it ended up like this. I only wanted Damiano to fall for me. I never, ever thought it would turn out like this…"At that point, Caterina no longer looked like the spoiled, arrogant girl everyone knew. She looked like a thoroughly devastated little girl, curled into a ball in the corner of the couch, clutching her knees as her entire frame shook violently. She had discovered she was pr

On screen, my face was as pale as a sheet. It seemed as if every ounce of strength had been drained from my body."So… you're carrying Damiano's baby right now?" I asked.Caterina kept her head lowered, not uttering a word.Gradually, my eyes welled up with tears, and every single breath felt labored. "Haven't you been trying to usurp my place? Now that you've finally gotten yourself pregnant with his child, why are you begging me to smuggle you out?"Shouldn't you be throwing a party while you kick me out of the Caruso family for good?"She didn't seem to hear a word of my interrogation. After a heavy silence, she finally parted her lips and said, "On Christmas Day, I slipped something into Damiano's drink. I paid off his doctor ahead of time and had the drug mixed into the wine he usually drank."I even prepped the bedroom in advance. I disabled the security cameras and sent the housekeepers away…"Tears streamed down her cheeks, but she burst into a fit of laughter that was

Damiano's words plunged the council chamber into a brief, suffocating silence. It took Teresa several seconds to snap out of her daze before shooting to her feet."Damiano, Caterina went to such extremes for you! She even had the guts to drug you," she bellowed. "Now that she's fallen pregnant, you think you can just wash your hands clean of her by saying the baby isn't yours?"Damiano's expression darkened. "Mother, I said I never touched her."Teresa let out a bitter chuckle, her eyes rimmed red. "Then, where did the baby come from? Do you really think a girl would destroy her own reputation with a lie like that?"The entire council chamber remained dead silent. Teresa, however, seemed to have reached the end of her restraint."If you hadn't dug your heels in back then, I never would've accepted Bianca as my daughter-in-law. A stranger can never compare to Caterina, whose background we know inside and out."Caterina grew up right here in the Caruso residence. She knows the rul

In the memory, I stood before Caterina as my heart slowly sank."Caterina, tell me who the father is first," I said, doing my best to keep my voice steady.Caterina snapped her head up, her bloodshot eyes flickering with resistance. "Stop asking!"Wrought with panic, she grabbed me. "Bianca, you have to help me! Just get me away from this family, and I'll never show my face to any of you again! Please, I'm begging you!"Her nails dug painfully into my skin, but my anxiety only spiked. The more frantic she became, the more it proved that the truth was a skeleton in the closet that could never see the light of day.I took a deep breath and forced her hands off of me."Caterina, it's not that I don't want to help. But you've never liked me, have you? You've always claimed I was the one who stole your brother from you. You hate me, and you wish I would leave the family."And now, when something this catastrophic hits the fan, you refuse to tell me anything and expect me to help yo
