Chapter 1

The Caruso family's secret council chamber was brightly lit, its tiered gallery packed to the rafters with thousands of family members.

I was trapped in the judgment chair at the center of the room. Someone held my shoulders down while cold metal restraints locked around my wrists and ankles.

When I tried to struggle, a faint cramp pulled in my abdomen.

"Let me go…"

Pale-faced, I lifted my head and looked at the man standing on the platform.

"Damiano, please. I'm begging you. Don't do this."

Damiano Caruso stood under the glaring spotlights in a tailored black suit, his expression stark and unreadable.

Those eyes that had once looked at me with tenderness were now filled with iciness and doubt.

Around me, a team of researchers was busy calibrating the equipment. A silver helmet began to hum, casting an eerie blue glow onto the platform.

The silence in the gallery was deafening.

I knew that once they started the machine, every secret tucked away in my mind would be ripped out and put on display for the entire room.

"Damiano, I can't go through a memory extraction," I said, my voice shaking as I looked to my husband for help. "Please, just stop this."

Before he could answer, his mother, Teresa Bellandi, slammed her hand onto the table and shot to her feet.

"Oh, so now you're terrified? Where was that fear when Caterina went missing?"

Her eyes were red, and her voice shook with rage.

"For an entire year, we haven't known if my daughter is dead or alive! You were the last person seen with her on the surveillance footage. Everyone has begged you for answers, but you refused to say a single word.

"Bianca Moretti, where on earth are you hiding my daughter?"

Wrought with emotion, she lunged forward, grabbing me fiercely by the collar. "Do you have any idea what this year has been like for me? I wake up every single night, dreaming that Caterina is out there suffering. If you hadn't intentionally buried the leads, we would've tracked her down months ago!"

Tears rolled down my cheeks as I struggled for air due to her grip. "That's not true. I didn't hurt her…"

"Then, why won't you talk?" Emilio Caruso, who had spent the larger part of his life ruling the underworld, finally spoke, his face dark as fury blazed in his eyes.

"Bianca, this family has treated you with nothing but respect. Ever since you married in, Damiano has spoiled you, and everyone in this room knows it. And how do you repay us?

"Ever since Caterina disappeared, you'd rather let the entire family brand you a suspect than give up a single detail. If you won't talk, then we'll just take the answers ourselves."

As soon as he finished, the head of the research team stepped forward with a polite nod. "The extraction unit has been fully calibrated."

"No…" I put up a desperate struggle, the heavy iron chains rattling violently against the frame. "Don't turn it on! Damiano, please… I can't go through with this!"

The dull ache in my stomach was intensifying by the second. I forced myself to speak, my voice shaking. "I'm pregnant…"

The entire chamber went dead silent.

With bloodshot eyes, I looked desperately at Damiano. "The doctor told me I can't handle any physical shock right now. This machine will harm the baby. Damiano, this is our baby…"

At those words, murmurs rippled through the chamber.

However, Damiano merely let out a harsh, bitter chuckle. He approached me, his steps measured. Bending down, he caught my chin in a firm grip.

"Bianca, do you honestly think I'd believe a word you say? The medical team ran a full panel on you just last week. The charts showed you were in perfect health. You're so desperate to bury the truth that you're actually faking a pregnancy?"

My eyes widened in sheer terror.

I had only found out myself this morning from a pregnancy test kit. I had no idea that last week's routine checkup had actually been a setup to clear me for today's extraction.

"I'm not lying to you." I looked up at him, my heart breaking. "Damiano, I'm really pregnant."

For a split second, something in his eyes seemed to waver.

But before it could take root, Teresa clamped a hand onto his arm. "Damiano, have you forgotten? She's spent the last year spinning whatever lies it takes to cover her tracks!"

The flicker of hesitation in Damiano's eyes vanished instantly.

"Bianca, one way or another, I'm finding Caterina today. Since you refuse to tell me, I'll get the truth by force."

The truth didn't die with me, and the real hell was only just beginning.Three days after my death, the elders secretly retrieved all the backup surveillance footage from Christmas night.Emilio thought that once the surveillance footage had been scrubbed clean, every trace of his crime would vanish with it. He had forgotten that in a mafia family like the Caruso family, a secondary, entirely independent backup system always ran in secret to prevent an internal betrayal. No one knew that only the elders had access to it.The day the footage was restored, a heavy, suffocating silence fell over the Consiglio dei Vecchi. On screen, Emilio was seen walking into the back wing late at night. Hours later, he walked back out, his clothing completely disheveled. At that moment, the truth was all but laid bare. When Teresa saw the footage, she let out a chilling shriek. She lunged forward, clawing at Emilio's face until it was a bloody mess."You bastard! We raised her as our own! How co

Damiano rushed toward me in terror, shouting at the researchers, "What are you waiting for? Get that thing off her!"Only then did the researchers snap out of their daze. They scrambled to shut down the machine, and the moment the helmet was removed, my body went limp, blood dripping from the judgment chair.Damiano's eyes widened. He lunged forward and caught me in his arms."Get a doctor over here now!"The secret council chamber fell into chaos.A team of healthcare providers rushed through the doors, and the moment they saw my condition, their faces turned a ghastly shade of white."How did she lose this much blood? Prepare for resuscitation!""Her vitals are plummeting!"After checking my condition, the doctors moved quickly to save me. Suddenly, one of the female doctors looked up at everyone, shock flickering in her eyes."Are you people completely insane? She's pregnant! You subjected a pregnant woman to neural extraction? This is literal torture!"Damiano's expressio

My body was already so weak that I couldn't withstand Teresa's slap. Blood began to trickle from the corner of my mouth, and the judgment chair beneath me was already stained red.Even so, Teresa looked right through it and demanded, "Say something! This is all fake, isn't it? The baby has to be Damiano's! I knew you were trouble from the start. When Damiano insisted on marrying you, I should've fought tooth and nail to stop him."I slowly let my eyelids fall. Feeling my life slipping away, I no longer had the energy to argue. In my memory, Caterina was sobbing hysterically. "Bianca, I don't know how it ended up like this. I only wanted Damiano to fall for me. I never, ever thought it would turn out like this…"At that point, Caterina no longer looked like the spoiled, arrogant girl everyone knew. She looked like a thoroughly devastated little girl, curled into a ball in the corner of the couch, clutching her knees as her entire frame shook violently. She had discovered she was pr

On screen, my face was as pale as a sheet. It seemed as if every ounce of strength had been drained from my body."So… you're carrying Damiano's baby right now?" I asked.Caterina kept her head lowered, not uttering a word.Gradually, my eyes welled up with tears, and every single breath felt labored. "Haven't you been trying to usurp my place? Now that you've finally gotten yourself pregnant with his child, why are you begging me to smuggle you out?"Shouldn't you be throwing a party while you kick me out of the Caruso family for good?"She didn't seem to hear a word of my interrogation. After a heavy silence, she finally parted her lips and said, "On Christmas Day, I slipped something into Damiano's drink. I paid off his doctor ahead of time and had the drug mixed into the wine he usually drank."I even prepped the bedroom in advance. I disabled the security cameras and sent the housekeepers away…"Tears streamed down her cheeks, but she burst into a fit of laughter that was

Damiano's words plunged the council chamber into a brief, suffocating silence. It took Teresa several seconds to snap out of her daze before shooting to her feet."Damiano, Caterina went to such extremes for you! She even had the guts to drug you," she bellowed. "Now that she's fallen pregnant, you think you can just wash your hands clean of her by saying the baby isn't yours?"Damiano's expression darkened. "Mother, I said I never touched her."Teresa let out a bitter chuckle, her eyes rimmed red. "Then, where did the baby come from? Do you really think a girl would destroy her own reputation with a lie like that?"The entire council chamber remained dead silent. Teresa, however, seemed to have reached the end of her restraint."If you hadn't dug your heels in back then, I never would've accepted Bianca as my daughter-in-law. A stranger can never compare to Caterina, whose background we know inside and out."Caterina grew up right here in the Caruso residence. She knows the rul

In the memory, I stood before Caterina as my heart slowly sank."Caterina, tell me who the father is first," I said, doing my best to keep my voice steady.Caterina snapped her head up, her bloodshot eyes flickering with resistance. "Stop asking!"Wrought with panic, she grabbed me. "Bianca, you have to help me! Just get me away from this family, and I'll never show my face to any of you again! Please, I'm begging you!"Her nails dug painfully into my skin, but my anxiety only spiked. The more frantic she became, the more it proved that the truth was a skeleton in the closet that could never see the light of day.I took a deep breath and forced her hands off of me."Caterina, it's not that I don't want to help. But you've never liked me, have you? You've always claimed I was the one who stole your brother from you. You hate me, and you wish I would leave the family."And now, when something this catastrophic hits the fan, you refuse to tell me anything and expect me to help yo
