Nikolai's POV
Nikolai was soaked in orange juice and dripping wet. But that wasn't his problem. His major concern was the look on her face when Tyla yelled seventy strokes of the whip. He's not one to shy away from mentoring out punishments to people. After all, she was here as punishment for what her pack did.But there was something about her that made him want to protect her. Maybe it was the cite freckles dotting her face, or the innocent green eyes looking down dejectedly. He couldn't place why she invoked his need to protect.Slowly, Nikolai stood up and wiped his face. He heard her gasp behind him as he unfolded his full length. He turned to her and realized he still didn't know her name. The girl who had captured his attention at first glance."What are you called?" he asked."Raine." She squeaked still looking down. Nikolai wished she would raise her head so he could look into the emeralds she wore as eyes."Come with me." He ordered.Nikolai didn't miss the triumphant smile that stretched across Tyla's face. His gamma itched for violence and loved it whenever the servants were humiliated."Next time, you be careful while on the job." Tula sneered.Nikolai showed no emotions as he walked out even though he was boiling with rage at Tyla's antics. Mostly, he was angry with himself for even caring about a stupid omega. He took her to the weaponry and shut the door. The thud of the metal made Raine yelp and jump back in fear. Nikolai ignored her and went ahead to finger the weapons on display admiring the fine workmanship that had been invested in them.He ran his fingers through a horse while and peered at it intently."Forgive me, alpha," Raine begged.Nikolai looked at her briefly and turned away. Next, he took down the whip from its stand and cracked it in the air."Take off your clothes," he commanded.Raine burst into tears but didn't disobey. Slowly, she peeled off layers of clothing from her body. He noticed her movements were strained and that she tended to wince at some points.Ever since she walked into his territory, he noticed she had some difficulty in her movement which he didn't see during the moon procession. The moment she stepped into the breakfast room with that tray of food on wobbling legs, his heart tugged at him.He needed to find out what happened to her but didn't know how. Tyla provided him with the perfect opportunity.Raine's crying subsided to sniffling. She had already resigned herself to her fate of getting whipped but Nikolai had no intentions of doing such a thing. He turned to look down at her, kneeling on the floor in just her underwear. And just as he suspected, lash marks marred her entire body.He walked around her to inspect the damage. The welts looked angry but not so new. He suspected they could be about a day or two old. His jaw ticked in anger at the welts. Someone dared to touch her before handing her over to him."Who?" he demanded harshly.Rained jumped at the sound of his voice and shook her head. She didn't understand what he was asking. With his index finger, Nikolai traced one of the marks between her shoulder blades. Raine hissed and shivered on impact. The sound caused a primal need to arise within him.His will growled and charged at him for control, snapping through the chains holding him down. Nikolai suppressed him as much as he could and willed him to be calm. The world bared his teeth in anger. He didn't like being told what to do."Who did this?" Nikolai asked again."I was punished for disobedience. It was no one in particular," she answered.Nikolai suspected that her answer was aimed at protecting those who hurt her. He vaguely wondered if Alpha Tiki did it. The way he shut her down at every angle during the moon procession had been alarming."Did Tiki do this?" he questioned.Raine shook her head strongly."No, not him. Please. It was nothing I didn't deserve."Nikolai was familiar with the way omega wolves were treated. This should have come off as normal to him but somehow, he felt the urge to snap someone's neck for hurting her."Lie down." He pointed to a colt on the side of the room near the wall. Raine took two steps towards the colt and fell to the ground. He rushed to her side and picked her up. Deja vu slammed through him.His mind flashed back to the moment he licked her up after she fell from her carriage. She must be a magnet for bad luck. He mentally chuckled at the thought.Gently, he lay her down on the colt and constructed her lie on her stomach. He went to the stash of supplies and fished out a salve.Raine's eyes tracked his every move. He could see the wariness in them and he willed her to relax. He won't hurt her any further than has already been done. She kept watching him till he knelt next to her and began to apply the salve to her broken skin. Raine closed her eyes at the contact. A lone tear slipped out of her eye."Why are you doing this? I thought you were going to who me for embarrassing you?" she enquired meekly.Nikolai didn't know how to answer. He just shook his head and continued to work on her broken skin. Scars of some old beatings greeted him as he worked. He got to her neck and that was when his restraint snapped. There, boldly placed for all to see was a bite mark. She had been claimed by another man. His jaw ticked and he ground his teeth in anger.Murder. His wold screamed murder in his head. They needed to find who hurt and marked her and tear into their neck. His wolf induced an urgency in him. Nikolai tamped him down and gently massaged her skin. He started up a conversation to take his mind off his dark train of thought. Now wasn't the time to unleash his demons."You must be hungry. I know you haven't had anything to eat.""I can manage. It's not a big deal."Nikolai nodded not knowing what else to say. After some time, he was done working on her entire body."Do you feel better?" he asked and almost bit his tongue at his stupidity. Of course, she wouldn't feel better right away. He needed to give it a little more time for the salve to work into her body and alleviate some of her pain."Yes," she answered with a kind smile. He nodded and handed her some rice cakes and clothes. Raine stared at him in bewilderment."You can take the rest of the day off. I'll inform the omega head."Raine was still looking at him shocked when he left her behind in the weaponry. He rushed out to get some air before he does anything stupid like pick her up and fuck her against the wall. His head must be clouded by her beauty. Normally he didn't feel such things for anyone. He went in search of Gabe, needing to cool off.His beta was buried deep in a pile of financial work and accounting for the expenses squandered during the expedition.Nikolai flopped into the best in front of him and signed. Gabe looked up from the ledger he had been working on and pinned Nikolai with a stare."What do you want?" Gabe asked with a sigh of his own.Nikolai swiveled in his chair for some minutes heightening the suspense in the room. Gabe squinted his eyes looking at him expectantly and waiting to hear his answer."Someone hurt her before handing her over to me."Gabe's eyebrows took a nosedive since he didn't understand what Nikolai meant. He pursed his lips in thought for some seconds. Suddenly his face straightened."You mean that omega? Before she came here, she belonged to them. They could have done what they wished with her." Gabe explained."You think I care about what they do to their wolves over there? Not only did they desecrate her before giving her to me, she has been claimed by another man!""What the actual fuck?" Gabe asked."I see you finally understand the situation. The night pack has insulted for far too long.""Let's burn them to the ground. First, they attempt your life, second, they give you an unclean omega as a peace offering. Like it wasn't enough, she had to be one that had already been claimed by another man. What insolence!""Put some men together. We are going for a little confrontation." Nikolai smiled sinisterly.Raine stepped out of the pack house looking confused. Nikolai leaned on his car with Gabe by his side and watched the emotions flickering across her face. He couldn't help himself and the way he stared at her.Her freckles made her all the more cute as she approached. His wolf pranced around in happiness. The damn animal had some serious they'd need to work out."If you stare harder, maybe time would become frozen and give you two the chance you need." Gabe's voice sarcastically droned next to him. Nikolai rolled his eyes and averted his gaze."She's really beautiful, Gabe. All that red hair. I want...""She's an omega." Gabe cut him off.Nikolai squared his shoulders and glared at his best friend."And I am alpha." He fired back."Exactly my point. You are alpha. Not just any other alpha. You are the alpha. The most powerful across the packs. You can't degrade your position because of a common omega.""What are you saying, Gabe? She's beautiful, I never said I wanted to have her as
Raine's PovRaine walked through the door of her father’s house and the creak of the hinges sent a shiver down her spines. Her senses heightened at once and her nostrils flared. Something was not right, and she could sense it.Her father, Alpha Tiki, had gone on an expedition whose details they didn’t bother to leave with her because she was defective. Of course, they had left her behind with her sister, while the rest of the wolves went on the hunt. The sound of Raine's sister shouting orders to the servants was absent, even though it's usually loud and high-pitched. Or at least, she should have been here in the sitting room, waiting for her arrival. But none was the case. Everywhere was silent. Raine couldn’t help but think of the calm before the storm.Knowing the tragedy that would befall her if she didn’t go to report to her sister about her trip to the mall, she headed straight to her room to give a briefing. There were voices. Muffled voices. Raine could hear the distinct pitch
Raine saw her father’s eyes flash wolf. That could only mean one thing. He was angry. And the anger was all her fault. She had rotten luck as he found her sprawled on the floor like a coward. Her stepmother, Shania, stepped through the small crowd that had gathered and sneered at her.“And why exactly are you cowering on the floor?” She hissed. The woman had no love for her step daughter. Not even a tiny bit.Just before Raine could think of an answer to give, her brother, Atticus, ran to her side.“Raine!” He bent down and gathered her in his arms. He was the only one who ever cared for her in the entire household.“What’s going on?” He asked, looking pointedly at her. She closed her eyes and let the deep baritone of his voice wash over her and give her some comfort.“Tyrion? What’s this?” Atticus asked again, looking up at his dear friend. The three of them have always been inseparable.“Raine is acting up. Again.” It was Bellona who answered. Raine’s head snapped up at once to glar
The voice from the doorway was hard and filled with authority. Raine turned toward the sound to find her father's beta, Beta Drago, Tyrion's father.Atticus released his father's wrist abruptly and stepped back, as if he had been burnt.. Fear flittered across his face for a brief moment. It was unheard of that a member of the pack stood against the Alpha or even challenged him unless in a duel. This did not bode well. Not at all. Her father's eyes were dark with anger and hurt as they followed the movement of his son away. Raine could hear Atticus cursing under his breath. She could only imagine the punishment that would follow such a dreadful act. No doubt it would be one of great shame. Her heart clenched in empathy for him, knowing that once again, she had orchestrated a downfall for her brother.Beta Drago stalked towards Atticus. His eyes held no hint of mercy. There was only justice and punishment."Do you challenge the alpha to a duel?" He asked, peering into Atticus' eyes.
Sunlight filtered into the room. It glinted off every surface. The dust motes danced and shifted in the beams, as though they had a life of their own.The morning was warm. It made Raine feel like a blanket wrapped around her when she lay down in bed. If she had a mother, then this is what her love would feel like. The gentle wind outside ruffled her hair, and she got a whiff of the scent that surrounded her. Raine’s eyes widened, and she sprang up from the bed. Her scent. There was something different. about it.She opened her dresser and peered at herself in the mirror. At first, she saw nothing unusual. Then it came to her. There was a giant wolf bite on her shoulder.Tyrion had marked her.“Shit.” Raine cursed. She ran her fingers through her red curls and bangs, trying to tame the wild hair until her fingers reached her nape. She massaged lightly, and the memories of the previous night assaulted her. They didn’t come as flashes and images. They were all clear. How Tyrion’s lips
A moment of silence passed and everyone seemed rooted to their spots for a moment. It was like they all needed a moment to process the very words they just heard.Atticus glared at the side of my father's head while Belly and Shania smirked in response."Father, Raine already said she would participate in the moon dance." Atticus reminded him.Tiki didn't reply for a few seconds. He forked some applesauce into his mouth and took a drink of water from his glass."The moon dance is a show of feminity to attract masculinity. Raine is betrothed to a future beta. She has no business being in the moon dance and sending attraction signals. She will be the symbol of holiness." Tiki explained.Raine's eyes watered. She still couldn't believe her father was making her marry Tyrion."Father, please. Don't begrudge me of this request. Tyrion is a lying, cheating bastard. You can't give me to him." She pleaded."That's enough, child." Tiki thundered slamming his hands down on the table. Raine jump
Raine's eyes narrowed into slits as she watched her sister advance towards them. Jealousy brimmed in Bellona's eyes, and Raine could feel the heat behind them. She walked up to the attendants and subtly pushed them aside. Then, she ran her hands down Raine's hair, sifting through the silky curls and weighing the new look."You have such beautiful hair." Bellona complimented. Her voice was filled with awe and reverence. Her eyes were glued to the strands of hair in her hand. Raine watched her with guarded eyes, but slowly, her suspicions fell away. She let herself feel the love and bond that should be shared between sisters. Bellona smiled at her and sat at the foot of the bed."I'll just sit quietly and watch you get ready." The head attendant raised a brow at Raine asking for her permission. Raine gave her a nod and they continued with the preparation."You should go into the bathroom and change into your dress." The stylist advised. Raine took a deep breath and got up. Bellona gas
Shocked gasps and murmurs spread through the entire pack at once. Everything seemed to occur in slow motion.A chill spread through the crowd as Raine lay on the floor with her face planted to the ground. She couldn't bring herself to get up. A throbbing pain in her knee forced her to sit up and nurse the scraped knee. A hush followed and whispers started to spread all over the pack members. The beta who had tripped rushed to her side with an apology in his eyes, trying to help her up.“Evil has graced us!” someone yelled. Raine looked towards the voice to see an old man glaring murderously at her. At times like this, she wished she had her father's wisdom, Shania's fearlessness, or Atticus' strength. She would even take Bellona's deception and bravery if it would get her out of this situation. She knew how disgraceful her fall was. Her family hid her like a plague away from others, trying to mask her defect. Not because they loved her and wanted to protect her. It was simply becau
