3. I WILL DO IT

"Please, hold on, Amery. Don't die on me." Emery yelled out. "I swear, I was out to find the money for your surgery." She bent her head to feel her pulse, she was breathing faintly. "God, what do I do?" She pulled her phone out of her bag to call an ambulance.

Emery panicked as she watched her twin sister lie lifelessly on the floor; she had lost more weight than she remembered, her hands were so fragile and her skin so pale. Emery sobbed, praying that her sister would not die before the ambulance arrived.

A few minutes later, the ambulance arrived, picked them and headed to the hospital.

They got to the hospital and Amery was rushed into the emergency ward. Emery had to stay back at the reception while the doctors and nurses treated her sister. She prayed, hoped, and wished.

After about three hours, one of the doctors came out. He walked to where Emery was kneeling and called her to his office. She was dead scared as she walked behind the Doctor like a zombie.

"Doctor, please what happened to my sister?" She asked, taking a seat in the Doctor's office.

Doctor Ryan sighed, "Emery, I told you to get the money for her surgery the last time you visited. I told you the tumor was spreading." His expression was faint and sad. "I'm sorry, but it has gone beyond our control, there are seizures in her brain and if she doesn't get the removal surgery done in time, you might lose your sister." He shut his eyes, rubbing his temples in worry.

"Help me, Doctor! I can't lose my sister. She's the only one I have left. Please, what do I do?" She asked, her voice shaky.

"Just get the money for the surgery. That will help her, I don't know of any medical organizations that are giving out grants to patients. I would have told you to try one. I am sorry I can't help, but to save your twin's life, we need the money." Doctor Ryan concluded.

Emery knew it would come to this, she bent her head and tears rushed down her cheeks. There was nowhere she was going to get a hundred thousand dollars, there was no way. She had tried juggling jobs together but spent the money saved on feeding and medications for Amery.

"She can't go home with you in this state. She has to stay in the hospital and we will watch her until you get the money for the surgery." The Doctor left his seat, walking closer to Emery. He patted her back and stared at her. "Just do your best to save your sister." He nudged her with his head and left the office.

Emery waltzed into the ICU, struggling to find the room her sister was in. She stopped by the door of the room, holding the doorknob, tears streamed down her face like a river; it hurt so badly to know her twin was on the verge of dying and there was nothing she could do to save her.

She clicked the door and it opened widely into Amery's room, she walked in, shutting the door slowly.

Amery heard the sound, she turned to see her sister, and the big smile that appeared on her face melted Emery's heart.

"Sissy, you are here." She said.

"Amery, how do you feel?" Emery sat on the bed, clutching her sister's hands very tightly. She kissed her forehead and his lips lingered there for a while. "How are you?" She asked.

"Emery, you've been doing too much. I am sorry for always putting you through this stress. I was at home when I started convulsing," she stopped talking and heaved a tired sigh. "Then I fainted, I couldn't shout for help, no one would help me." She smiled a smile that was so pale.

With trembling hands, Emery touched her face. "How do you feel now?" She asked again.

"I am in pain, the pains are unbearable but I'm willing to bear them until I die. The Doctors said the tumors have spread and if the surgery is not done in time, I will die." She smiled again. "You've done too much already. Dying will be the only way to ease me of this pain and ease you of the burden."

"Don't," Emery shushed her, "Don't say those scary words." She looked away from her sister and tears fell from her eyes. "Have you forgotten we haven't visited Disneyland? We have not seen our favorite celebrities. Do you remember you talked about having chubby kids who look like me? And the man of your dreams, you haven't met him yet. How can you die when you haven't done these things?"

"Oh," Amery chuckled, a stream of tears welling up her face. "I don't have much time for those things anymore. You can fulfill my dreams for me." She said to her sister.

"No, Amery, we will fulfill our dreams together! We are going to fulfill those dreams together." She kissed her forehead and hugged her tightly, not letting go for a very long time.

When she let go Amery was asleep, she placed her back gently on the bed and watched her. She thought back to how cheerful her sister used to be when they were kids. Amery was the slim twin while she was the thick one. Amery always stood up for her when other kids bullied her for her size, she stayed with her and did things for her when she needed someone. She couldn't just watch her die in pain, she had to save her.

She remembered the card Benhail gave to her, she jumped out of the bed and placed her fingers on her lips; thinking of what to do.

"Wait," she raised her hands. "He wants me to carry his baby? That is surrogacy, right? Yes!" she snapped her fingers, peeking through her shoulder to check if she hadn't woken Amery. "There are ways to go about surrogacy, could be insemination methods and all. I don't have to sleep with him, do I?" She smiled. "Wait, I went to the club to sleep with a man." The smile on her face faltered; her real problem was not sleeping with Benhail, it was carrying the child for nine months—she wasn't sure she could do that.

She couldn't watch her sister die when she could save her. Nine months, and three months to take care of the child. She was going to give a year of her life to him, she sighed. If giving a year of her life was what it took to save her sister, then she was willing to do it.

She strode outside with her hands behind her back, she bumped into an elderly woman whose face was swollen. She had seen her with her grandchild before, only God knows what was wrong with the poor girl. Emery picked the file up and gave it to the woman. "I am sorry," she muttered and went on her way.

She got to the parking lot and took a seat, the time was two at midnight. She contemplated dialing Benhail's number and going to his house when it was dawn. The doctor's words kept piercing her ears and she knew she wouldn't rest until she found a solution.

She pulled out the card from her purse, her eyes rested on the small paper for a long while. Heaving a sigh, she clicked the numbers and dialed. Placing the phone in her ear, she waited for him to pick it up while it rang.

Benhail picked up after it rang three times, "Who's this?" His voice echoed through her ears, she shut her eyes to have a feel of his deep voice.

"This is Emery," she said, "I have thought about your offer…" She stopped.

"And what did you decide?" He asked her, but she gave no response to him. "Hey, are you there? Hey?"

"My decision is," she sighed, there was no going back now. "I will do it, I will carry your child for nine months and breastfeed the baby for three more months as you've implied. I will do all that you want me to do." She said, amidst tears.

"Are you sure about this?" She noticed Benhail's voice was brighter than before.

"Yes, I will do it." She affirmed once again, she had to save her sister's life.

"Good, the rest of the contract will be discussed in the morning. I will come pick you up tomorrow and we will talk more about this after which you will sign the contract. I have to rest my head now, goodnight." He ended the call before she could talk.

"Jerk! He's such a jerk!" She muttered, weeping and cuddling the phone to her chest. "Oh Lord, what do I do?" She snuggled up under her knees and looked towards the ICU. Heaving a sigh, she shook her head, there was hope that her sister would not die and that was all she needed to know.
