The certified birth record left no room for doubt.

Father: Vittorio Salvatore Romano.

Mother: Elena Marie Romano.

Change of guardianship: None.

Adoption record: None.

The clerk at the county records office printed a second copy and pressed the raised seal into the bottom corner. She slid it across the counter, but her fingers stayed on the page for a beat.

"This is all you'll need for an overseas student clearance," she said. "But I have to ask. Why did you think you were adopted?"

I stared at the two names I'd written on school forms my entire life. "My family told me I was."

By the time I reached the Romano estate in the Hudson Valley, night had fallen. Cameras tracked my car from the outer gate to the guardhouse. A security officer checked my plates before the iron gates rolled open, even though I had lived there for twelve years.

The main house blazed with light. Inside, the gallery walls displayed Bianca at every age: Bianca on her first pony, Bianca at a charity luncheon, Bianca accepting a participation plaque in elementary school. There wasn't a single photograph of me.

I used to think an adopted daughter had no business on a family wall. Now I understood that someone had made a point of hiding a biological one.

Something silver rolled across the music-room floor and struck my shoe. Bianca stood beside a shattered crystal perfume bottle, amber liquid spreading across the ivory dress she was supposed to wear at Saturday's heir's gala.

"Alessia, thank God." She grabbed my wrist. "Mom's going to lose it. This was a custom order."

For years, that tone had worked like a fire alarm. I would step in, take the blame, and put out whatever blaze Bianca had started. Elena always said the same thing afterward: a girl lucky enough to be taken in by the Romanos should know how to give something back.

I called a maid and asked her to bring down the backup gown, then arranged for the stained dress to go to a specialist cleaner. When I picked up the silver cap, a shard of glass sliced the side of my palm.

Bianca went pale at the sight of my blood.

I had always mistaken that look for disgust. With the birth certificate hidden inside my bag, I finally recognized it for what it was: guilt.

Elena swept into the room before Bianca could say anything. She took in the dress, the glass, and the blood on my hand, then placed a slim black briefcase in my arms.

"The seating plan, guest profiles, and security outline for Saturday are in there. Bianca is appearing as a junior foundation director for the first time, so redo the risk list tonight."

"I have a consulate appointment tomorrow. They asked for additional documents."

"Montrose won't revoke your admission because you're a day late." She straightened my collar with the practiced tenderness she used when she wanted obedience. "We gave you the Romano name, this home, and twelve years of protection. When the family needs you, you don't put yourself first. Right?"

That line used to make an apology jump straight to my tongue.

But Romano had never been a borrowed name.

"I'll finish it tonight," I said, taking the briefcase.

Her smile returned. "That's my sensible girl."

She left without asking about my hand.

My room occupied the far end of the north wing. It was smaller than Bianca's dressing room, but it had a lock, and for the moment that was enough. I uploaded the birth record to a new email account, photographed every page, and slipped the original into the lining of my suitcase.

On the top shelf of my wardrobe sat a black-walnut archive box. It held my medals, coding certificates, debate awards, and the letter confirming my full scholarship to Montrose Institute in Edinburgh. Elena had forbidden me to display any of them because, in her words, "Bianca shouldn't have to feel like a guest in her own home."

The east wing had an entire trophy room for Bianca. Her riding ribbons sat beneath museum lights. So did photographs from charity galas and a plaque from a school play in which she had delivered three lines.

Her mediocrity deserved a spotlight. My excellence had to be locked away.

I had once accepted that as the price of being allowed to stay. Now another possibility sat cold and hard in my chest.

They weren't afraid my success would hurt Bianca's feelings. They were afraid someone might decide I was the better heir.

I logged into the credit-union account they didn't know existed. Competition prizes, freelance translation jobs, and small programming contracts had brought the balance to seventeen thousand eight hundred dollars. It wasn't Romano money. Vittorio couldn't freeze it with one phone call.

It was enough to leave.

Bianca knocked once and opened the door without waiting. "You haven't forgotten Saturday, have you? Dad said if the gala goes well, he'll let me sit in on a family committee meeting."

"I haven't forgotten."

"You're a lifesaver." She flashed a relieved smile and disappeared down the corridor.

I opened the briefcase. Her speech sat on top. The first line read:

[As the only daughter of the Romano family, I have always understood that inheriting this name means inheriting responsibility.]

For a long moment, I pictured drawing a red line through the word only.

Instead, I uncapped my pen and fixed the clumsy opening, the weak transitions, and the false humility. They needed to believe I was still the Alessia who cleaned up every mess and asked for nothing.

  • Twelve Years As Their Fake Daughter   Chapter 10

One year later, I moved into a small apartment on the south side of Edinburgh. The kitchen was narrow and the radiator knocked whenever the weather turned cold, but my name was the only one on the lease. My parents had no spare key. No designer could arrive with a tape measure and announce that someone more important needed my room.I continued my studies at Montrose and became the lab's youngest paid research assistant. A European bank licensed our beneficial-ownership system. On the first page of the contract, under Core Authors, my name appeared first.Alessia Romano.I kept the surname because it was printed on my birth certificate. It had always belonged to me.When the trust review ended, my status as a lawful beneficiary was formally confirmed. Clara asked whether I wanted to claim a committee seat."Not right now," I said. "Keeping my rights doesn't mean I have to go back and live inside them."This time, no one could sign on my behalf. No one could call my refusal childish or

Three weeks later, Vittorio came to Edinburgh. He waited outside the research building beside a black Range Rover. There was more gray at his temples than I remembered. A year earlier, the sight of him waiting would have made me hurry over and apologize for keeping him outside.I didn't get in the car."We can talk in the cafe across the street," I said. "It's public, Clara knows you're here, and I'm recording. Those are the terms."His mouth tightened, but he followed me.We took a table near the counter. Vittorio removed his gloves and placed them beside a leather folder. "Elena is here too. She wants to see you.""I don't want to see her.""She's your mother."I met his eyes. "So we're admitting that now?"He sat back. "After the crash, you didn't recognize anyone. You fought the nurses and refused treatment. The doctors said you needed a story you could accept. When we told you we were kind people who had taken you in, you finally let us help.""So the first lie was for treatment.

Bianca sent me an encrypted folder. It contained forty-two old emails, medical reports from the crash, original files for projects I had completed after I turned fourteen, and an addendum to the family trust that no one had ever shown me.Three days after the accident, Elena had written to Marcus.[The doctors have confirmed severe long-term memory loss. Alessia doesn't recognize us or remember the estate.]A week later, she sent another message.[Bianca cannot cope with the possibility that the committee may favor the eldest daughter. Prepare an arrangement that leaves Alessia's legal identity unchanged while allowing her to believe she was adopted. It may need to last for years.]Marcus answered that he couldn't alter a state birth record. The story could only be maintained inside the family, which meant every informed employee would need to sign a confidentiality agreement. The final email came from Vittorio.[Then make her believe the Romano name was given to her out of charity. I met Nico Moretti in the cybersecurity lab.He was crouched in front of an open server rack, wrestling with a fiber connection, when I walked in for my first project meeting."You must be the first-year student who pushed the ownership model to ninety-seven percent accuracy," he said without looking up."And you must be the guy who shut down the test server and made me rerun four hours of work."He glanced over his shoulder and grinned. "Well, now that we've exchanged compliments, I guess we're acquainted."The Morettis and Romanos cooperated when money demanded it and watched each other the rest of the time. Nico's father had business ties to both sides, but Nico never asked about mine. He found bugs in my code, argued with my assumptions, and emailed before touching any data I had created. The first time he brought me hot chocolate, he tucked the receipt beneath the cup. "You get the next one.""You saved a receipt for three pounds?""I believe in clean accounting. Also, you're terr

Two weeks later, Bianca told me Elena had been hospitalized with stress-induced atrial fibrillation.[She woke up asking for you,] Bianca wrote. [The doctors say her heart rate is stable now, but she's scared.]Once, the slightest strain in Elena's voice would have sent me searching for something I had done wrong. Now I read the message twice and asked the only question that mattered.[Does she regret lying to me?]Bianca didn't answer for almost an hour. Then my phone rang.“How long have you known?” she asked the moment I picked up.“Since I went to the records office. I gave you a chance to tell me the truth after the gala.”Her breath caught. "I knew when I was eight. Mom sat me down after a committee dinner and said that if you learned you were their daughter too, the elders would fight over eldest-daughter succession.""You lied to me for ten years.""She said if I kept quiet, we'd always be a family. I was a kid, Alessia. I thought I was protecting us. Later, I didn't know how t

When my flight landed in Edinburgh, I connected my backup phone to the airport Wi-Fi. The family group chat loaded 186 unread messages.By midmorning, concern had curdled into accusation.[You frightened your sister.][Running away after everything we've done for you is beyond ungrateful.][Call me before your father gets involved.]Vittorio had sent only three.[Call me. Now.][I'll pull your departure record.][Come back before I find you, and we can pretend this never happened.]He didn't believe I could actually leave the Romanos. In his mind, the estate wasn't merely a home. It was the edge of the known world, and he had spent twelve years teaching me that one step beyond it meant falling. He froze the family credit card issued in my name and ordered security to check private airfields. He didn't know I had never used his card. I had taken a cab to JFK, paid for the ticket from my own account, and boarded a commercial flight with students, tourists, and a screaming toddler two row
