Chapter 2

Benedicta's POV

I woke up feeling excited today because I'm going job hunting finally. I even woke up extra early because I want I get used to it should I get the job. Hopefully, get it at the hotel that Lexi told me about. Maybe it is wishful thinking because I mean, my chances are slim but hey! I'm an optimistic person thanks to Lexi. Where there is a will there is a way and what's there to lose anyway.

Come to think of it, I don't even know what I want to work as but I guess beggars cannot be choosers. Whatever comes up to the table I will take it. I just want to be productive until I get interested in something for me to pursue. One step at a time I will start living life a little. And I just can't wait till I start working and meet and make friends. Up to now, I was living a miserable life with no one by my side. I kept wondering if my parents never wanted me if they died or just drunk good for nothing and they ended up losing me to the system. Whichever it is it sucks because I ended up alone and sad but not anymore. Now I have Alexis who is my best friend/ soul sister and I am grateful for having her in my life at this point.

I applied some light makeup and put my hair into a ponytail. Then I took a medium summer dress and gladiator sandals along with a denim jacket. After that, I grabbed my purse and went to the kitchen where I found Lexi already on breakfast duty.

" Right on time! Here are some buttermilk pancakes and tropical fruit juice"

" Thanks, Lex! God knows I was craving this" she giggled as soon as I dug in. We ate in silence and when we finished I helped her clear up.

" Okay, I'm going to make a move now, see you later," I told Lexi as I was going out but she stopped me. " Wait, let me grab my things, and we will go out together. I will give you a ride" I knew she would want to take me there so I didn't even bother protesting. She came and we left.

Lexi is a photographer and works in an art gallery. She told me about her family, mother, and brother but she never got into detail just that they were rich folks. That being that I wondered why she was not with them. She has a family but chose to stay away from them and she would even bring them up in any conversation we had. I guess she has her reasons, not all families are perfect.

" We are here!" she said pulling me out of my thoughts and I checked outside to see where we were. " Is this it?"

" Yes. All you need to do is go directly to the general manager, his name is Jacob and tell him I sent you." I looked at her in confusion. " Why? Do you know him?"

" Sort of, now go before you get late. You are out to make an impression if you want the job. Go now!" She practically shooed me out of the car not before kissing me on the cheek. I stood on the sidewalk watching her drive off.

I still wonder how she knew the general manager of the hotel but I decided to follow her instructions instead of pondering the day away. In front of me was a tall building of average height. The glass was glistening in the shining sun but the gold-plated name was very much visible Twilight Hotel. The bell boys looked expensive in their uniform and I felt out of place and intimidated. I stepped inside after verifying my identity and stepped inside the grand hotel with marble shining floors, a grand staircase with a red carpet and gold railings, magnificent chandeliers hanging about, and creative paintings. The hotel was a mixture of modern and Victorian with a little bit of antique here and there but most of it was modern. Its grandeur was too appealing and all the more reason to bail on this.

The place was a whole new world to me and luxurious for a person of my standing. I felt like a freaking intruder waltzing into a castle. I was so lost in the interior that I did not see the person I bumped into. Our shoulders collided and we both winced in pain and a purse fell to the floor.

" Aah! Watch it you stupid bitch. Couldn't you see where you are going? Look now you made me drop my Gucci purse!"

An elegant lady who was probably Lexi's age, with blue eyes and midnight-black hair, was fuming in of me and I was standing like a deer caught in headlights with her eyes glaring daggers at me. So much for an impression more like the first scene. I've not been here for five minutes but I'm already getting yelled at.

" What are you looking at? Pick it up!" I immediately bent to pick up her purse and she snatched it from my hand. " Good for nothing" she muttered storming away. I was unfazed by her behavior as I was familiar with it and trust me it never gets old. Thank heaven there were not many prying eyes so a few saw me get insulted.

I continued to navigate my way until I saw the reception. Upon arrival, I asked the nice lady, unlike someone to direct me to the general manager's office. She asked for my name and as soon as said it she jumped into action.

Okay, I'm officially missing something. She called someone on the phone and a lady came to take me to Mr. Jacob. We took an awkward silent elevator ride to the 5th floor. The ding cut the tension and I followed her out to the office. She knocked and we were granted permission to enter. She let me in and left behind me. I was alone now and super nervous.

The was a man filling in the paperwork behind his desk and it took a full minute of awkward standing and gazing around for him to give me his attention. Jacob Sommers was written on the nameplate on his desk. He raised his head to look at me and I just gave him a small smile. He had slicked back dirty blonde he, brown eyes, and thick eyebrows. He was exceptionally good-looking and immaculate in his suit.

" So it's Benedicta Anderson, right?" It took a second to process his question before I responded. Oh, and his voice was like honey with a British accent. Funny I didn't swoon, maybe something is wrong with me because you heard that accents are attractive, especially British.

" Yes sir" and he hummed.

" You look a little young to be looking for a job" his eyes were scrutinizing me from head to toe, luckily not in judgment but more curious.

" Circumstances demand it. I was told to come to you, sent by Miss Alexis Williams."

" Yes, Alexis and I have talked. And there is no need for anything more. Since you have next to no experience I'll put you on trial for the maid position. I hope you don't mind?" I shook my head indicating that it was alright. However, I was starting to feel uncomfortable with the gaze that was roaming every part of my body but my eyes. I shifted from one foot to another not to get nervous.

He took the phone and called someone. The girl who brought me here was back and instructed to take me for uniform fitting and then a tour around the hotel so I familiarize myself with the place. I silently breathed a sigh of relief from getting away from Mr. Jacob's inspection.

Again, the girl never said anything, and neither did I. I was never the one to initiate a conversation so I opted to remain reserved. Lexi obviously got the job since no one conducted an interview. I will have to give her an earful and thank her later for her help. I would have probably failed the interview so her intervention was a stepping stone. It did not push away the feeling of guilt that I got the job with help and not but at least I had 3 months trying to prove that I can do my job.

I was given a classic black and white turning that reached the middle of my thighs and an apron. After that, I was taken around the hotel passing all the rooms and we went through the lobby passing many amenities. This place was so big and sparkly and luxurious and upscale, definitely a five-star. There were various restaurants, French and Italian, boutiques, a poolside, and a casino, I could go on but it was too much. We ended up in the maids' locker rooms, and the place where the supplies were, located in the storeroom. The girl was explaining my duties but I was fascinated by everything around me.

" All right and that's about it. Every day when you come, you check in first then come here to change, and then get to work. We'll be looking forward to you tomorrow morning and remember. This is still a trial. Your permanence will depend on how well you do your job."

" I understand and thank you. I promise I will do my best to keep my job"

" 3 months is all you have so make the best of it" I smiled at her nodding my head in agreement and she left. I was alone in the locker room smiling in happiness. Soon I will be working and I don't care that it is a maid's job. For a person who had nothing, this is something and I will gradually work my way to the top step by step.
