Chapter 3

Kalen

I watched the girl’s face relax as her breathing got heavier, and she fell asleep against Rowan’s back as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

Kai, my wolf, had no intention of moving, on the contrary, he snuggled even more against her and continued to purr without giving me any control.

I didn’t know exactly what had happened. We were running in the woods, together with our pack, under the full moon when suddenly Kai snorted the air and changed direction.

Austin had yelled at me in the head, but I told him to keep running while I tried to take control of my wolf. And I wasn’t the only one with problems. Rowan had problems with Blake, too. He was going my way.

In a short time, we found ourselves near the city while I tried to convince Kai to return, but he had completely closed the link with me and limited himself to running until he stopped in the trees, looking at a field of night flowers.

I scowled through his eyes when I saw a figure pull up and look around. A girl all alone in the woods in the middle of the night, what a death wish she had.

The girl suddenly got up and began to walk to the opposite side of ours. Needless to say, Kai and Blake rushed in pursuit, making the slightest noise, but the girl had noticed us and had begun to run, before Blake, with a jump, blocked her way.

Kai blocked her from behind, and the girl fell backward, grinding backward.

Kai and Blake slowly approached her as I tried to control him, not understanding what he wanted to do, and then suddenly, my stupid wolf did something I’d never seen him do. He threw himself on the ground, his face on the ground as a sign of submission next to the girl, just as Blake did next to me.

I was stunned by the actions of my wolf, but even more so when he let himself be pampered by the girl as if he were not an Alpha but a stupid puppy at the command of some human.

I looked at the girl again, and finally, Kai gave me control again, allowing me to return to my human form. I found myself between the girl’s legs, almost lying on her while she rested her head on Rowan’s back.

"What the fuck just happened," I whispered to my twin brother.

He shook his head and carefully moved, trying not to wake the girl who seemed to be sunk in a heavy sleep.

In the distance, we heard the howl of the call of our beta, but we did not respond, we would explain later to Austin what had happened.

"If she is our Mate?" Rowan suddenly asked, leaning the girl’s head on his lap.

I looked down at the girl, her fiery red hair framing her pale face. She was wearing light pajamas and a pair of sneakers. Her top strap slipped, showing off her shoulder. My eyes pointed to the exact spot where her neck met her shoulder, and my mouth watered.

I leaned over her, stuck my nose in her neck, and breathed deeply, trying to catch her scent, but nothing got to my nose.

"I smell nothing," I said to my brother.

He, too, leaned over and sniffed the air near his hair, frowning his frowning forehead, "Neither did I," he said, "I can’t even smell human," he added, "She doesn’t have a scent at all," he said.

"She’s not 18 yet," I concluded.

The wolves who had not yet reached the age of eighteen, if they did not belong to any pack, had no smell, when they became adults, their smell was released, attracting their mate.  Unlike the rogues, who smelled of rotten meat, the lone wolves had no smell.

No male could recognize her mate before growing up, but why did our wolves rush to her if she didn’t smell anything?

"Do you think it’s her? Our Mate?" Rowan asked again, gently stroking her red hair while she started purring.

I looked at him for a moment, Rowan and I were now twenty-two years old, and throughout our life, we had existed with the knowledge that we would most likely have shared our mate, as we shared Alpha’s position, one was not superior to the other, but we were equal.

Although we were young, by now, we had lost hope of meeting our mate, usually, the wolves were paired with wolves of the same herd, or in any case, it never happened that one did not find his mate after years of reaching adulthood, So Rowan and I had already thought about getting a chosen, until now.

"I don’t know," I said, shaking my head and looking at the beautiful girl sleeping among us.

I didn’t know why, but when I looked at her, I felt like I already saw her somewhere.

"She’s not grown up yet," I continued.

"Yet Blake followed her here as if she had recalled him," Rowan said.

I sighed, and I shrugged "What’s a lone wolf doing here? They’re usually never near the packs," I scowled.

"She seemed very surprised when she saw us, almost frightened as if she had never seen one of us," I said without looking away from her.

"What will be her name?" I asked myself.

I sighed and rested my head on her stomach, listening to her deep breaths and heartbeat. I let myself be lulled by that sound until the sky began to clear, and I hear someone trying to connect with us through our mental link.

The girl moved slightly, and Rowan and I raised our heads to look at each other. We nodded, and, with a delicacy we never had, we took her and gently laid her on the ground, moving far enough away not to be seen.

The girl stretched to the ground and then stood up, looking around confused as she scratched her frowning head.

Her eyes were green as two green emeralds, then shook her head, her red hair swayed with her, and she stood up, walking towards the end of the wood.

Rowan and I moved quietly behind her, making the slightest noise, and we watched as she came to a fence and moved a wooden board, crawling in and disappearing from our view.

Alphas said Austin in our head, his tone was concerned, and I found myself sighing.

We’re coming back, I said, and then I turn around, and I jump, I shifted in mid-air, and I land on my legs. I began to run in the direction of the herd territories, I had to find out more about the girl.

As we drifted away into the canopy of trees with the sky clearing as the sun rose, Kai let go of a howl of nostalgia that rang in the sky, accompanied by Blake’s.

Our wolves did not stop howling even when they entered the pack's territories and heard the response mind link open, but we did not answer. We couldn’t understand why our wolves were acting like that, we couldn’t explain it.

We could only figure out that they were longing for something like something was ripped out of them, but we didn’t know if it was exactly what they were thinking or just a whim.
