INICIAR SESIÓN**Marcus's POV**I thought hiring a babysitter was the solution. In my defence, it made complete sense at the time. Diane had been clear, she could not be Eli's primary caregiver. I had a full day of meetings at Steele Corp that I had already postponed twice and could not postpone again. Eli needed someone. The logic was clean and simple and entirely reasonable. What I had failed to factor in was letting Diane know that I had contracted somebody. Her name was Kezia. She is Twenty-three, certified in early childhood care, references that checked out completely, recommended by a colleague whose toddler apparently adored her. She arrived at ten, immediately got down on the floor with Eli and his cars, and within fifteen minutes Eli had decided she was acceptable which for Eli was the equivalent of a standing ovation.I left for work feeling like I had solved something.I had not solved anything.---My phone started ringing at two in the afternoon.I was in the middle of a presentation.
**Angela's POV**Everything happened at once."I need help in here!" My voice was already at the door before I had finished processing what my hands were doing . One was on the call button, one reaching for Richard's wrist, my eyes were on the monitor that was screaming every number at me at the same time. "Room 7, cardiac event, I need a team now!""Grace." I turned to the woman still standing frozen in the doorway. "Ma'am. I need you to step outside right now."She didn't move."Ma'am." I crossed to her in three steps, my voice was firm and professional, leaving absolutely no room for negotiation. "I understand this is frightening. But I need you outside this room immediately so my team can work. Please."Something in my voice finally reached her. She stepped back into the corridor, her eyes still fixed on Richard over my shoulder, and I pulled the door shut between them. The next twelve minutes were the longest of my career.Dr. Osei came in fast, the crash team behind him, and the
**Angela's POV**"Mr. Richard, your vitals are looking really good today." I wrapped the blood pressure cuff and noted the reading on my chart. "Strong. Consistent. Much better than the last time I was at work." I looked up at him. "So why do you look like someone just told you the world is ending?"This was my first day at work after the two weeks leave I got because of my incident which kept me at the hospital. He was staring at the window again. He had been staring at that window since the first day I was assigned to him and I had come to understand that the window was where he went when something inside him was too large to look at directly."Mr. Richard.""Sit down, Angela.""You know I can't do that...""Sit down.""It's against my work ethics. If my supervisor walks in and finds me sitting on a patient's bed having a personal conversation I could be—""Angela." He turned from the window and looked at me with the particular patience of a man who had been making decisions from t
**Marcus's POV**Angela is calling me.??I stared at the screen for a full three seconds just to make sure I was reading it correctly. 1:47 AM. Her name was visible on the screen, yet I could not believe my eyes. I looked at Diane beside me on the bed , she was deep asleep with one hand under her cheek. She laid completely still.I got up slowly. I stepped one foot on the floor, then the other. Still with the phone on my hands, I moved to the door with the specific careful movements of a man trying not to wake the woman in his bed while answering a call from another woman entirely and understanding fully how that sentence sounded.I closed the bedroom door behind me.Stepped into the hallway and answered."Hey."There was silence for a moment. Then .... "He didn't eat again today did he."Oh so we are just going to go straight into a conversation, completely ignoring the fact that you framed me in court today? okay..."He ate a little," I said. "In the evening. Diane made—""Marcus."
**Marcus's POV**"Eli, come here baby. Come sit with Diane.""No.""Eli—""No.""Sweetheart, the judge is about to come in...""No." He crossed his arms in finality.Diane looked at me with a smile that was doing a lot of work to stay on her face."He's just tired," I said quietly."He's been tired since yesterday," she said. Still smiling, though she was smiling a little too hard."Eli." I crouched to his level. "Buddy. Sit with Diane for me. Just for a little while."He looked at Diane.Looked at me, then looked at the courtroom doors. And the moment those doors opened and Angela walked in with her lawyer, her chin raised up and still with bandage on her head, Eli's entire body reoriented like a compass finding north."Mama!"He was off before either of us could move. Diane's hand shot out and caught his arm and he pulled against it with everything his small body had."Eli... Eli, wait—""Mama!" He strained toward her. "Mama, mama, mama—""Baby." Angela crossed the room in three st
**Marcus's POV**She didn't answer my calls. Not once. Not during the court session, not after, not on the drive over. Twelve calls, but they went straight to voicemail after the third ring which meant she was declining them, not missing them. I knocked on her door anyway.Nothing."Diane." I pressed my hand flat against the door. "I know you're in there. Your car is outside. I'm not leaving until you open this door."There was silence."Diane. Please."The lock turned. She opened the door and looked at me and what was on her face was not anger, I could have handled anger. Anger I knew how to navigate. What was on her face was the specific hurt of someone who had trusted completely and been made a fool of, and that was so much worse than anger because there was no argument to meet it with. She was still wearing the ring.I noticed that immediately. She stepped aside and let me in without a word and that silence followed me into the apartment, sat between us while she stood by the wi
*Elena's POV*“What the bloody hell?” I screamed, bolting upright in the tangled sheets.Liam jerked awake, his eyes wide and bleary. “Elena? what’s wrong? You’re shaking. Talk to me...”I didn’t answer. Tears were already flooding my red, swollen eyes, spilling hot down my cheeks. I couldn’t speak
*Elena's POV*“Deal,” I said, my voice barely above a whisper.“Deal,” Liam replied, his hand was warm and strong around mine as we shook on it. Our eyes locked for a second longer than necessary, and something electric passed between us. I quickly looked away.“Come on,” Liam said, still holding m
*Liam's POV*“You useless boy! Why haven’t you brought a single girl home yet?” Dad screamed from his hospital bed, his voice cracking like he was already halfway gone. “I’m lying here dying, Liam! My only wish is to see my grandchild before I close my eyes, and you’re still playing bartender like
*Elena's POV*“So what are you trying to say, Drake?” I asked my lawyer, my voice cracking as I clutched the coffee mug tighter. My eyes burned from days without sleep. “Tell me straight. I can handle it.”Drake leaned forward across the table, his face tight with sympathy he couldn’t hide. “Elena,
