The Room Down the Hall

The room was quiet—too quiet.

The door creaked faintly as Emilia pushed it open. Moonlight spilled through the curtains, casting silver stripes across the floor and over the edge of the bed. Isadora stirred at the sound, her eyes fluttering open with a quiet groan.

“Milicorn?” Her voice was groggy, laced with sleep and confusion. “What time is it?”

Emilia stood at the foot of the bed, arms crossed tightly over her chest. “Does it matter?”

Isadora blinked, trying to sit up. “Is something wrong?”

“You tell me,” Emilia said, stepping forward. Her voice cracked slightly, but she didn’t let it stop her. “Earlier, Luca said there was more to the story—and I didn’t think much of it. But it’s been eating at me. Ever since you showed up again… something’s off. You’ve been distant, cold most times. I feel like I barely know you anymore.”

Isadora’s breath caught in her throat. She looked away, eyes fixed on the window now.

“I just…” Emilia’s voice faltered, but she pressed

Emilia stepped quietly back into the bedroom, her feet bare against the polished wood floors. The door clicked softly behind her.Luca was at the window, shirtless, one hand braced on the frame as he looked out over the garden. The morning sun hit his shoulders, outlining the sharp definition of his back in golden light. He hadn’t heard her come in.She leaned against the doorway, arms folded, a smile tugging at her lips.“So,” she said, “how many people did you mobilize to find me?”Luca turned sharply, the tension in his shoulders melting the second his eyes landed on her. “Dio, don’t do that again,” he muttered, crossing the room in three long strides. She laughed, not bothering to move as he reached her. “What, disappear to the next room for half an hour?”“You weren’t in bed,” he said, exasperated but not unkind. His voice was low, still hoarse from sleep and maybe just a little raw from the fear. “And you didn’t say where you were going.”“You thought I ran off with Isadora?” sh

Isadora stood in front of the mirror, the brush in her hand trembling ever so slightly as she swept it through her newly dyed hair. The once chestnut strands had vanished beneath the soft, golden hue that Emilia had worn since they were children. She’d even mimicked the slight wave Emilia favored—loose enough to look natural, sculpted enough to whisper elegance. The gown she wore shimmered in the candlelight. It was one of Emilia’s favorite—deep sapphire cotton with delicate embroidery at the sleeves, cinched just enough at the waist to draw attention but not scandal. It still carried the faintest trace of rose perfume. She stared at her reflection. The tilt of her head, the arch of her brow, even the slight downturn of her mouth—it was uncanny. She had become her sister. No one would know. No one could know.Moving through the corridor with practiced grace, she passed unnoticed. The staff assumed she was Emilia. They bowed their heads, addressed her as “miss,” and carried on with the

The plates had been cleared, the wine bottles drained, and the men had dispersed — Marco outside for a smoke, Luca disappearing into the hallway without a word. It left the two of them alone in the kitchen, the clink of glasses the only sound between them.Emilia rinsed a plate at the sink, not looking up.“You’re really going to sleep in his room?” she asked, her voice even, careful.Isadora shrugged from where she leaned against the counter, arms folded, nails tapping idly against her elbow. “Why not? Your weak and failed attempts at seduction was cute but you know,” she leaned forward to whisper “you need to have loads of experience to satisfy a don like that.”Emilia’s laugh was soft and humorless. “And of course you know what you’re doing Isadora. You always know what you’re doing. You left me, me!! You own fucking twin! You’ve been in contact with our mother who is well and alive and stays in the De Rossi mansion. You’ve also been in touch with Nicolo” Isadora’s reaction to Nico

The world burned in sepia tones. Smoke coiled like spirits in the alley where Cece fell. Her white dress, so ordinary hours before, now fluttered like a torn flag in the gutter—stained crimson. A shot rang out, though in dreams it was always silent, like thunder behind glass. Her eyes met his before they closed, not in fear, but in that quiet acceptance only children and saints seem to have.Their mother screamed—a jagged sound that split the air, more animal than human. She was already collapsing to the floor, her heart succumbing before the gunman ever turned away. Luca tried to run, but his feet stayed rooted to the wet pavement. Time bent. The figures moved in reverse, Cece rising, the bullet flying back into the barrel, their mother drawing breath again. But even in dreams, he knew: they were already dead. And his father, standing in the shadows—tall, unreadable—was already beginning to disappear. Not gone. Just... fading. Then came the quiet. That empty kind, where grief hums be

Emilia sat up slowly, the sheets falling to her waist. Her pulse was erratic, and her tongue felt dry against the roof of her mouth. Luca’s gaze was cutting into her, intense and unrelenting. His jaw was tight, brows low, eyes narrowed like he was trying to burn the truth out of her with nothing but a look. She swallowed.“I didn’t mean to say that. It just slipped.”“No, no, no. Don’t start that shit.” He pointed at her, voice quiet but hard. “You said Mama. And I heard it clear.”She wrapped her arms around her knees, pulling them to her chest. Her voice came smaller than she liked.“You call her noona ‘Noona Peppi.”Luca blinked.“Noona Peppi?” He sat up straighter. “You’re telling me that Noona is your mother?”Emilia nodded slowly. “She told me everything. That she left me when I was a baby to keep me safe. Said she practically raised you.”Luca stood up from the bed, pacing. “She did raise me. After my mother died, she was always around. But she never told me she had a kid—let a
