Marcus had a cruel way of playing jokes on me, and he was never satisfied until the whole school laughed at me at least once a day, and I made the school newspaper once a week for being the biggest laughing stock.

Five minutes ago, I smelled like my late mother’s favorite cotton rose perfume. Now I smelled like rotten fish. The dirty fish water from the bucket that had been hanging above the door clung to me, soaking through my uniform and dripping from my hair.

“I thought we should get you some scent since your little wolf doesn’t have any,” Marcus muttered, sitting on top of my desk with his legs crossed.

Our classmates burst out laughing again.

He wasn’t lying. My wolf didn’t have a natural scent, which was why I resorted to perfume. It had been the butt of their jokes for as long as I could remember.

“Who would even want that as a mate?” Marcus’s best friend, Macy, added.

“Maybe a vampire,” someone called from the back.

That earned another round of laughter.

I kept my eyes down, hoping they would get bored if I didn’t react. That was the mistake I had learned not to make with Marcus. He could smell embarrassment better than any wolf in the room, and the moment he sensed it, he pushed harder.

“Aww, Billie.” Marcus leaned toward me, pretending to study my face. “Don’t look so sad. It’s just a joke.”

I wiped a drop of dirty water from my cheek with the back of my hand. “It’s not funny.”

I never should’ve said anything. All I had to do was endure for three more years until I finished college. Then I wouldn’t be Alpha Trojan’s ward anymore. I wouldn’t be related to Marcus in any way. I would be free to make my own decisions and leave.

“The attitude,” Marcus said. “I was beginning to think the fish water killed it.”

More laughter.

My throat tightened, but I refused to give him the satisfaction of seeing me cry. I reached for my bag instead, intending to get out of the classroom before he could come up with something else.

I barely got my fingers around the strap when someone threw a sandwich at me. It hit my shoulder and fell onto the floor, making the room erupt all over again.

My heart was hammering so fast that it felt like it might just explode. And there was nothing I could do to make it stop. To make them stop.

“Oops,” a boy near the window said, grinning.

Marcus looked at him, then at me. “That was an accident.”

Another piece of food flew across the room. This time it hit me in the chest.

I flinched but didn’t say anything.

“What?” Macy asked. “You don't like food?”

He picked up an apple from someone's desk and tossed it lightly from one hand to the other.

“Maybe she needs to eat more healthily. She's too fat.” She threw it.

I ducked, and the apple struck the wall behind me.

“Hey!” I shouted, unable to help myself anymore.

That’s when a whole bunch of things came at me, a carton of milk, custard, lemon juice. The laughter became louder with every hit.

Someone hit me with something hard and I backed away in pain, clutching my bag against my stomach.

Marcus hopped down from my desk. “You're making this so much more fun.”

It had been like this since I moved into his home at fifteen, right after my dad’s death. Dad was his father’s beta and best friend for as long as I could remember. Marcus had been my best friend since we were born. We used to do everything together, and he would always protect me from bullies. Now he was my biggest tormentor.

Everything changed when my dad died four years ago, and Alpha Trojan took me in as his ward.

“Billie, are you going to stand there all day?” Marcus’s voice dragged me out of my thoughts.

I looked up to find him holding a carton of milk in one hand, a smile spreading across his face as he watched me. “Can you stop? Just this once.”

“I'm trying to,” he replied, sounding amused. “But you keep standing there looking like that.”

I blinked. “Like what?”

“Like you want everyone to feel sorry for you.” He shrugged.

Macy snorted from beside him. “She always looks like that.”

Someone behind me laughed, and I felt my face heat up again. I tightened my grip around my bag and walked toward the door, but I barely made it two steps before another carton came flying across the room. It struck my head and burst, covering the side of my face in cold yogurt.

“Sorry!” a girl called out, laughing so hard that she could barely get the word out.

I didn’t bother turning around. The tears were already threatening to come out and if I cried near them, things would only get worse until I got a panic attack. I already knew how this would end. Even asking Marcus to stop was a fat chance.

I pulled the door open and crashed into hard muscle.

His palm connected with my cheek so hard that my ears rang. He might’ve been an omega, but that slap was all man.I just stood there, staring at the floor while the sting spread across my face. I could hear my own heartbeat pounding. Then I looked back at him. He was breathing hard, his face twisted with anger.I raised my hand and slapped him as hard as I could. In the past I never would’ve dared no, but it felt good to finally stand up for myself. Even though he’d probably make my life more difficult.Kieran's eyes were as wide as an owl. He looked between us like he'd suddenly found himself trapped in the middle of a pack war.“Oh, shit,” he muttered, taking a step back.Marcus slowly turned his face toward me. His hand went to his cheek as his eyes widened in disbelief. “You hit me?”“You hit me first,” I muttered. His jaw clenched and I thought he was going to hit me again, probably harder this time.Kieran moved between us. “Okay. No. Absolutely not.” He raised both hand

His gaze and smile turned toward me, making me blink and swallow. Then his lips hit mine before I could even process his face coming closer. I froze for a second, completely caught off-guard. His lips were soft and he tasted like caramel. His favorite sweetener.I leaned into the kiss without thinking much of it. It felt so familiar… and easy. Like I’d been in that moment a hundred times before. His tongue slipped into my mouth and an embarrassing low moan came out of me. The baby whined in my arms.“Can you not be disgusting?” Marcus muttered near us, making Trojan break off the kiss and kiss my forehead instead.Moon Goddess, how did I get here? How did this become my life?“You go get the dress,” Trojan murmured and gently took the baby from me. “I’ll take care of these two and make sure the preparations go smoothly.”“Thank fuck.” Marcus rolled his eyes.I just stood there like a deer caught in the headlights, all while trying to figure out how to tell my supposed baby daddy

I stayed in the bathroom for another few minutes because, honestly, I wasn't ready to go downstairs and face whatever Marcus meant. How was I twenty, with children, a missing year, and a relationship with Alpha Trojan that I couldn't remember starting? The worst part was that Trojan hadn't acted like we were a couple when he came into my bedroom. He sat on the edge of my bed and asked if I was feeling alright. He didn’t kiss me, hug me, or even touch me in a way that suggested we were anything more than a former guardian and ward. If Marcus was telling the truth, that meant I wasn’t in a coma. And he said there was never a fire, but I clearly remembered a fire. Was I losing it? Did I lose my memories? Or did I die and get reborn in the future? Okay, it was definitely not the latter. That would be nuts. I slowly walked toward the bedroom door.“Okay, Billie,” I whispered to myself. “You can do this.”I walked down the hallway and followed the sound of the crying downstairs. When

I stared at him in the mirror, my heart caught in my throat. I opened my mouth to answer but just ended up closing it. Everything from year sixteen hung between us, or hung in me. He probably didn’t even care. He already did a lot to nineteen-year-old me. And judging from what he just called, he hadn’t changed much in the year I lost.He started calling me fatty at seventeen, a year after my dad died. He never did it in Alpha Trojan’s presence, of course. He was too smart for that. At this point I still didn’t understand what made him change. Even when I probably burned alive in that science building, I didn’t know why my best friend started hating me. “I don’t feel so good.” I forced a tight smile before scrunching up my face. “My tummy hurts and I feel lightheaded”.I didn’t understand why there was a party that I supposedly had to fetch a dress for when I clearly just woke up from a coma.“It’s probably all that sugar you keep chugging down.” Marcus made a disgusted face.I d

My eyes opened to a pounding on the door. The familiar ceiling of my bedroom came into view. I looked around a bit, wondering why I wasn’t in a hospital. Did they manage to save me?I remembered waking up coughing as smoke filled the old science building. I remembered the heat from the door when I tried to escape, the panic in my chest as I screamed for someone to let me out, and the voices outside as they finally realized I was trapped inside. Then came the hissing beneath me.The gas line.I remembered the explosion.I started inspecting myself for injuries, completely ignoring the knocking on the door. I was perfectly fine. I had no burns and I didn’t feel any pain. But that could’ve just been because my wolf healed fast. Or maybe I was asleep longer than I thought?“Billie,” Alpha Trojan muttered from outside the door, his deep voice sounding curious.“Yes?” I managed. My voice sounded throaty and nothing like my usually-on-edge self.A second later, the door opened and he

Professor Whitmore gave me a disgusted look, scrunching up his nose. “What happened to you?”I opened my mouth to speak but he cut me off.“Go clean that shit off,” he muttered, stepping away from the door.I rushed out, laughter following me until I was in the hallway. And that’s when the tears came. I kept walking with my head down, wiping my cheeks with my sticky hands. I could hear people whispering as they passed me, and I knew some of them already saw the video or pictures from the classroom. It wouldn't take long before the whole academy knew what had happened.I wasn't going to the bathroom. I didn't want to stand in front of a mirror and look at myself, and I definitely didn't want to risk running into Marcus or any of his friends.I had another place in mind.My favorite hiding spot was at the far end of the school grounds, inside the old science building. It was technically off-limits, although students rarely went there anymore. The school had closed that section y
