Chapter 43

_Astrid’s POV_

Something was unsettling about mornings in this house. The atmosphere always felt too still, like it was holding its breath, waiting for the next explosion, either emotionally or otherwise.

Today, though, it was different.

I had just finished arranging breakfast on the long dining table, the smell of meat and eggs drifting through the air. Zade and Zarek were already seated at their usual places at opposite ends of the table. Neither of them looked at me. And yet, these days, I felt their presence more than ever.

After that experience at the amusement park, something shifted, I couldn't tell what it was, but it was positive.

On that day, the protective instincts that took over me at the sight of their scared expressions left me in utter shock.

Why did I react that way?

They never treated me well, or maybe they did, just a little.

Still, I shouldn't have felt the way I did that day.
