LACHLAN

The soft glow of golden lights bathed the terrace, casting long shadows across the ornate balustrades and reflecting off the gentle ripples of the canal below. Venice at night was a vision—timeless, mysterious, drenched in an elegance that made it easy to forget the weight of reality. Forget what was expected of me and how this was all a charade to manipulate her.

But I digress... the point was no matter how beautiful my surroundings were, she was the most captivating sight of all.

Her dark eyes, with that one spark of silver in the left one, glittered with the kind of wonder that only made me want to make it permanent there. Give her all the experience that will have her looking at me with that awe in her eyes.

The warmth of wine had painted a delicate flush across her cheeks, her lips were parted just enough to let out a quiet, breathless laugh as I spun her in a slow turn.

She giggled as I dipped her low, her hair spilling behind her like liquid silk before I rig

NINASomehow when I woke up this morning last night felt like a dream but I knew it wasn’t just a dream. It actually happened. Because the first time I woke up, my head was in his lap and his fingers were in my hair so I decided to go back to sleep. The second time I woke up, I was in the bed with my phone ringing as he reminded me to get ready to go back. Our trip has ended. Now we were in the car, Lachlan was going to drop me off at my fake address and soon I’ll have to be ready for my shift at Antonio’s hotel. But my mind was still stuck on yesterday. My memories were little foggy but I remembered my admission of my twisted desires and how I had done a verbal vomit in the hotel suite, letting him know how fucked up I really was with my missing past and memories, and haunted dreams. The dreams, that I deliberately termed as nightmares. Because what does it make me that those nightmares fueled my deranged desires? As the car drove closer to the apartment building where he’ll drop me,

LACHLAN I dragged the man out and as much as I wanted to skin him alive, then slowly bleed him out with thousands of cut before actually killing him, I wanted to go back inside to look after my little kitten more. When I’d send the fucker, I had explicitly told him to not to lay a finger on her. He didn’t just put his finger on her but the bastard thought he could hurt her.“P-please... P-please... A- I am s-s-sorry... please forgive m-me...” he blubbered.I narrowed my eyes on him as I asked, “Do I look like a forgiving type?”“I didn’t—”I pulled the trigger, not even in the mood to listen to his pathetic excuses. But it wasn’t his mistake, it was mine. I was responsible for it. I should’ve thought better and instead sent my own man to scare her. I hauled his body up and threw him over the railing, still brimming with violence. If it had happened back at home, I’d have spend days torturing him. But as it happens I wasn’t at home and this wasn’t Russia. I pulled out my phone and

NINAIt was late in the evening when the doorbell rang. I flinched, still spooked from earlier. My heart pounded as I hesitated, then slowly made my way to the door, pressing my eye to the peephole. A man stood on the other side, holding a brown bag."Who is it?" I asked, my voice steady despite the unease in my chest."Miss, Boss sent me to deliver your dinner."As if on cue, my phone buzzed. I glanced down to see a text from Lachlan.Lachlan: I sent you dinner. Eat and rest. Before leaving, he’d told me something had come up, that he couldn’t stay. I had swallowed my disappointment and watched him leave as he had kissed my forehead and left. But not without letting me know that he was leaving two of his men behind so I’d still feel safe in his absence. And as much I appreciated his thought, I still felt this strange hollow ache inside me with him gone that I’d never felt before. It was like in just a few days he had made a space for himself in my life and I was leaning too hard int

LACHLAN The cold night air biting through my jacket as I leaned against the stone ledge, my mind wasn’t on the streets below or even back at home where it should be. It was on her.Nina.She had consumed me. A fever I couldn’t shake, an obsession sinking into my bones like venom. It was wrong to feel this way for her when I knew what our future held. It was dangerous. But I couldn’t stop. The sharp vibration of my phone cut through my thoughts. My pulse stuttered when I saw the name.Jeremiah. The last time we spoke, there was disappointment and anger in his voice. Something that only fueled mine, because not only I failed him but also I failed her. She was hurt and in pain because of me. And I couldn’t stay close to her any longer without apologizing and kissing every inch of her to show her how sorry I was that she got hurt.I answered, and immediately his rough voice came through my bluetooth. But I didn’t get to enjoy it much as his words registered with the urgency in them.“L

To play our game.I didn’t know what came over me that I refused a quiet dinner at home, because according to him I needed rest, and instead I asked him if he was serious about his text regarding our game of chase. And then told him that I wanted that instead of a dinner date. When I’d woken up in the morning, there was an unmistakable scent of bleach in the air and this time I was sure someone was in my apartment. But when I’d opened the apartment door Lachlan’s bodyguards were still there, so that left me more paranoid and scared than before. And with my money gone, that note from the loan shark and everything going wrong in my life Lachlan felt like the only safe option. NINAI woke up to the sensation of cold seeping into my body. When I blinked my eyes, my cheek was pressed on something cold and hard. Concrete. Rough, unyielding, and damp. My head throbbed, my body a twisted coil of aches and bruises. And the air around me was thick with something pungent—coppery, metallic, the scent of rusted iron and dried blood.Darkness pressed in around me, thick and suffocating. My fingers twitched against the floor, searching for something, anything, to anchor me. But all I found was the sharp bite of chains wrapped around my wrist and ankle.Panic tore through me.No. No, no, no.I tugged, yanking hard, but the metal didn’t budge. It only cut deeper, biting into my skin. My breath shuddered out, my heart raced in my chest.Think. Think. Where am I? What happened? The last thing I remember—The park. The woods. The chase. NINAThe first thing I noticed was the warmth, a soft golden glow filtering through the curtains. The room smelled of fresh linen and chamomile, a deceptive kind of peace that didn’t match the unease tightening my chest. The walls were painted in muted yellow and cream, the kind of colors meant to soothe. But nothing about this moment felt soothing. My body ached, my limbs heavy as if I had been asleep for too long. My throat burned, dry and raw, and when I shifted under the blanket, the rustling of fabric sounded too loud in the quiet space. A voice broke through the silence, startling me. “Oh, you’re awake.”I sat up with a jerk and erything come back to me at once as I stared at an old woman standing near the windows. My heart raced with the memories and once again panic gripped me.But the old woman seemed unfazed of the turmoil inside me as she walked to the bed where I was sitting, clutching the blanket against my torso— my very naked torso. NINAMy hands trembled as I stared at my reflection in the mirror. The ivory dress clung to me like a shroud, mocking me with its delicate lace and intricate embroidery. The four women had worked tirelessly, perfecting me for a wedding I had no part in planning and didn’t want. Lachlan hadn’t come and I was starting to wonder if I’ll only see him at the alter. Just then the bedroom door was pushed open, and Lachlan stepped inside. “Leave.” He ordered, waving at the girls who were packing their things. They all filed out of the room, leaving me alone with him: my soon to be husband. His green eyes took me in and I felt myself freezing for his perusal. He said, “You look beautiful, kotyonok.”“What does it mean?”“Little kitten.”I nodded. Of course, he didn’t have to speak in Italian anymore. It was only to keep me unaware of his original identity. And once again I was reminded of his betrayal. Lachlan had done this. It was all his doing.Tears burned the back of my eyes and I turn

JEREMIAH “Was she in an accident?” I stared at the doctor as his question hung between us. The problem with his question was the same as the one that had occurred to me while I was going through the file that Chen brought. I didn’t know the answer. I didn’t know what kind of life my wife was living before we brought her here. When I remained silent, Lachlan responded, “We don’t know.” And I hated that we don’t know. Maybe it was time I started digging up in her life and what she was up to all these years while I was fighting for mine. The doctor nodded. “It is possible she was in one and then when she woke up, her mind decided to bury those memories that were too dangerous for her sanity. Most of the amnesiac patients have this in common. It's most commonly known as a Dissociative state. The mind protects however it can to ensure survival. It mostly is common in the victims of abuse or someone who've survived a fatal accident. Sometimes, it’s also the reason of selectiv

LACHLAN I was waylaid by a phone call from Kayne telling me that Vasili Baranov was itching and throwing hands for a meeting at the High table, to settle the disrespect he had suffered. The old fucking bastard surely wanted a trip to my black room and I'd happily oblige if given the chance. I had hated him since the moment he had suggested the marriage between his granddaughter and my Jeremiah. Something that had amused Jeremiah at that time, but now even he was annoyed by the old bustard's continuous pestering since the party. And so he had been ignoring all his calls and demands to meet him in person. But now Vasili was throwing a fit with Kayne and Xavier to make Jeremiah listen to him. I informed Kayne that I'll let him know when Jeremiah will be available for the High table, if ever. And then by the time I made my way upstairs to her room, Jeremiah was already there. Instead of entering, I paused on the threshold as I saw Jeremiah crouching beside her prone figure on the floor.

JEREMIAH Chen left the office without another word, what he had said now echoing in the silence of my office while Lachlan and I stared at each other, processing the information. The men who had attacked her were Russians.Lachlan took a seat and asked, "Did anyone know about her before we brought her here?"My jaw clenched, and I forced my hand to stay still on the desk, not ball into a fist like it wanted to, as I shook my head. Instead of pushing the curiosity aside I pulled the file open in front of me.The pictures of the men were there. All dead. Because my little shadow had been unable to curb on his violence. I might be known for my cold heart and merciless attitude, but Lachlan was the one who had a temper of a volcano. When it erupted it doesn’t stop until it destroys everything in his path. I focused back on the file with all the details of this men. Names. Their backgrounds everything was there.“Black Hive.” I pulled out a sheaf of paper and a black and white picture wi

ROSE My body was frozen from the fear of my own desire. His gravely words, his fury was making me want him more. It was almost ridiculous that I could feel the flutters in my lower belly. I knew he was going to spànk me like the other day, but unlike that day now I knew what was going to happen and as much as I feared it, the buzz of anticipation in my body couldn’t be ignored. You've really gone mad, Rose! Ryan pushed me on the desk, still maintaining the grip on my tied wrists. As far as I knew he pulled something from his pocket, something silk and cool to the touch with which he tied my hands together. I startled as he swept the hair off the back of my neck which he had unravelled and then surprising me he placed a gentle kiss between my shoulder blades. He followed my spine all the way down to my ass where he traced the waistband of my panties with his fingertips. I sucked in a breath as without any warning he dragged my pantîes down to my knees. LACHLAN I flung the office door open as I entered, my pulse still thrumming with the aftermath of witnessing her break down and looking at me with disgusted eyes, shoving me away like I was filth. Like she couldn’t look at me for one more moment, like she couldn’t bear my touch. She hated me. And god, it hurt.Jeremiah looked up from his desk, a half empty glass of bourbon in his hand even though it wasn’t even noon yet. His grey eyes travelled down me and I saw the possessive gleam he didn’t hide. Any other time I’d have enjoyed his gaze on me. But now. NINA It was ten in the morning when Lachlan entered my room, bearing a breakfast tray in his hands. The scent of buttery toast and coffee curled around me. If he thought it would fix things, like food could erase the way I was dragged, punished, humiliated under strangers’ eyes, while the one person who promised to stay and be there for me... vanished, then he was hugely mistaken.Because his presence now, the warm food, it didn’t bring me comfort. It was a slap, a mockery. And all it did was remind me what a fucking liar he was. A deceitful fucking man. A manipulative bastard.Worse than the monster himself. He walked in like he had a right to. Like nothing had happened, like he hadn’t fractured something that was already delicate between us. Like I hadn’t been left alone and stripped bare in front of the wolves, and he hadn’t walked out afterwards instead of holding me. Instead of giving me a safe blanket he had left me in the care of the monster. He put the tray on the table near

NINA My eyes fluttered open and I looked at the bed beside me, at the empty space, and felt a heavy weight in my chest. Like the presence I had felt wasn’t here in the reality but deep somewhere buried in my heart. It was a dream. I told myself it could only be a dream, but its echo was wrapped around me like a comfortable blanket. Like a blanket I had adored in childhood and lost somewhere along the way, but now I could see it peeking through the clutter of forgotten things, shining and beckoning me, as it looked down at me from the top shelf that I couldn’t reach. He was there in my dreams. Once again my husband was in my dreams and he wasn’t the monster he was today. I had willingly crawled into his lap, I had felt safe with him. He was the man who’d brought me my favourite food and gave me a relief from my horrible life.I sat up slowly and let out a breath when I felt my whole body tensing up in discomfort. How will I hunt you next time if you fainted in the middle of the chase.”I sucked in a breath, he made it sound like there was more to our little game of chase. I licked my lips and despite myself I obeyed him. Somehow it felt good to obey him, to make him see that I could do whatever he wanted from me.As I ate, I watched him. And watching him, made my body relax. It always did when I am around him, except that initial nervous energy that takes hold of me. But being close to him, my muscles would relax, no longer coiled up to fight or run from danger. Even though I knew he was dangerous, he felt less so with every other threatening presence around me.And it was all because of the last few days. Because something had changed without me knowing it. The quiet between us wasn’t threatening anymore. It had morphed into something else. Slowly, subtly, it had become a respite from the nightmare that was my life. I used to be s
