Layla

Shivers are sent down my spine as I fear to turn around, I’d recognize that heart piercing voice anywhere I hear it.

I stand upright; without looking back, I give him a reply.

“It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”

“It sure has, little Ruby finally came back after 5 long years”

“Little Ruby is no longer little, I see you still love your offensive remarks”

I try my hardest to look strong in his presence but it just feels like my heart is caving in, I can’t even look at his face

“my my, I guess that was disrespectful, I apologize. How have you been, mate?”

His reflection in the mirror was as ugly as ever, I felt mocked by his terrorizing smile.

“as you can see, Alpha; I’ve been rather good”

I can’t take it anymore, I can’t pretend so I let myself be weak.

“I’m stronger now, I’m better. All these years I’ve been trying to get over you but a part of me has been hoping you’d accept me when I come back”

“Is that so? Honestly, I had long forgotten you. Couldn’t care less about you returning to the pack house or not”

A tear drop rolls down my face as I hear him talk his rubbish

“have you come here to insult me? Interrupt my healing process? You’re trying to hurt me again but that won’t work”

“It won’t work? Looks to me like it’s already working”

He walks majestically towards me; standing behind me in front of the mirror, he gently grabs my chin.

“you look very dashing in this red dress, it’s quite surprising how much can change in just 5 years”

“what are you trying to say?”

I feel like my heart beat is getting loud enough to mute the sound of everything around me

“I’m saying that you look more lady-like, your feminine features have become more defined”

He moves his fingers down my chin and traces it to my chest, I should stop him but I feel very weak in the  knee. A sharp feeling of discomfort hits me and I summon the courage to take his hand off my body.

“don’t ever, DON’T EVER touch me like that. you made me miserable, made me feel like I was worthless so what changed?!”

“don’t get ahead of yourself, nothing changed; you’re still not fit to be my maid but this that red dress calls out to me”

“I hate you Alpha, I hate you so much. You have no right to touch me, I might be your rejected mate but apart from your sister, nothing binds you and I”

My face becomes wet with tears and my makeup becomes a mess; the alpha stands behind me with a sinister smile.

Just as he is about to talk, the door is pushed open

“I knew something like this would happen here, I just had a feeling you’d pull something like this!”

A furious Layla stood by the door; her facial expression was frightening as a large vein was very visible on her forehead.

“oh dear sister, you look beautiful”

“don’t ‘oh dear sister’ me! Why is Ruby crying? What did you say to her?”

“I didn’t say anything that wasn’t true. I just told her how good she looked and she became a bit emotional”

“you’re a rotten man, brother. You’re very rotten”

“Layla! You will not speak to me in that manner, I’m hoping you haven’t forgotten that I am an alpha”

“Alpha? Don’t make me laugh, you think that gives you the right to hurt people?”

“I see no reason why I should explain my actions to you, little sister”

“Don’t call me that!”

Boldly, Layla walks up to the alpha and stares him directly in the eye. I just stand speechless with tears running down my face.

“Layla, do you realize who you’re talking to? Have you lost your senses?”

“If you ever make her cry again, I’ll lose my senses then”

All of a sudden the alpha raises his hand to hit Layla

“you’re going to hit me? Hit me then, go ahead and do it”

Another person walks into the women bathroom, it’s that woman I saw the alpha with earlier in the party

“what seems to be the problem?”

Layla turns around and takes a sharp glance at the woman

“It’s a personal matter, you have no business here”

“Well I do, last I checked the alpha invited me to this event; meaning that whatever concerns him, concerns me too”

“Please excuse us”

I politely tell her to leave because I don’t want the drama to escalate more than it already has.

“oh my, you must be miss Reid, I’ve heard a lot about you”

“a lot? I don’t even know you”

“the alpha has told me all about you, how he rejected you and how it made you disappear for years”

The woman giggles and gives me a hypocritical smile.

“Now you’ve really crossed your boundaries”

Layla walks up to her and lands a hard slap on her face

“you have no right, absolutely no right to talk about my sister like that in my presence”

“you seem to have forgotten who your actual family is, Layla”

“It can’t be helped,  if this how my family acts then I don’t want to have anything to do with them”

The alpha grabs Layla’s chin firmly

“you will not talk to me like that, little sister. I can be very brutal when I choose to be, you know that”

Shortly after this happens, people gather in front of the door to witness this awkward sight

“what’s a man doing in a women’s restroom?”

Marcus questions from outside the door

The Alpha wears an uncomfortable look of shame on his face as he exits the room, leaving behind the woman he came with.

Layla notices I’m about to break down into tears so she tells everyone to excuse us, she shuts the door to hide my shame.
