Clarissa

Layla’s screen lit up blue.

Her phone vibrated twice against her leg, and her skin drained white in three seconds.

Her thumb jammed against the glass to lock it, but her hand shook so bad she dropped the whole device onto her lap. She grabbed it, flipping it screen-down on her thigh, her knuckles turning white. Her breath hit her chest fast and short, her whole body slumping into herself.

She glanced up at me, then at Valentine, swallowing hard over and over like she was trying not to

ClarissaThe door to the guest bedroom swung back, letting in the cool hallway draft.Chloe dropped her canvas duffel bag onto the foot of the mattress, her knuckles red from carrying it up the main stairs. She sank into the edge of the bed, her knees trembling under her grey sweatpants while she rubbed her palms against her thighs."The mattress is soft," Chloe said, her voice small against the tall ceilings of the main estate."It's better than the sofa at the old place," I said, setting her plastic box of prescription bottles onto the nightstand. "You don't have to carry anything else. The staff brought the rest of your clothes up."Footsteps clattered down the hardwood hallway.A middle-aged man in a dark grey cardigan stepped through the open door frame, two young assistants in blue scrubs trailing right behind him. They carried two silver folding cases and a tall metal stance for Chloe’s daily physical therapy routines."Good afternoon," the doctor said, setting his heavy case d

Clarissa "Say that again," I said, hitting the speaker icon on my phone screen while grabbing the keys off the store counter."The front entrance is blocked," Chloe’s voice rattled through the phone speaker, static cutting in and out. "There are moving trucks outside, Clarissa. Men in black polo shirts are pulling boxes right out of the hallway.""I'm on my way right now," I told her, grabbing Layla’s wrist and pulling her out the glass door toward the parking lot. "Don't touch anything. Just stay out of their way."I threw the store bags onto the back seat of the car and slammed the door shut. I jammed the key into the ignition, spun the wheel hard, and hit the gas, pulling out into traffic.I tapped Valentine's number on the dashboard screen with my thumb. He picked up on the second ring."Clarissa?" Valentine asked, noise shuffling in his background."Victoria is at the secondary mansion," I said, keeping both hands locked on the steering wheel while I shifted gears. "Chloe just c

Clarissa Brittany stood right across the hallway, her jaw locked so hard the muscles in her face twitched. Her red eyes burned straight into mine, her hand trembling against the stair banister while two guards walked Victoria toward the back door. She didn't say a word out loud, but her mouth tightened into a razor-thin line, making it clear this wasn't over. The morning after the party, the estate was quiet.I walked down the main staircase, my sneakers barely making a sound on the steps. Sun came through the tall glass windows in pale yellow light, hitting the empty hallway. The office door at the end of the hall sat halfway open. Valentine was sitting behind his desk with three men in dark suits. Papers were spread out across the wooden top, coffee cups sitting next to thick files. Valentine ran his hand through his hair, his brow pinched together as he signed a document, his phone buzzing twice against the wood without him answering it.I paused by the door frame, shifting my wei

Clarissa The front doors of the Gaston estate swung open, letting in the cool hall air.The whole place felt different. Usually, Victoria’s sharp voice bounced off the high ceiling before we even crossed the threshold, complaining about the staff or arguing on her phone. She didn't come running down the stairs. She didn't stand at the top glaring down at us. She stayed locked away in her room upstairs, keeping out of sight for once."She hasn't left her room all morning," Valentine said, sliding his coat off and handing it to the butler."Good," I said, unzipping my sweater. "I don't need her screaming at me today.""She knows better than to cause a scene right now," Valentine said, resting his hand against the small of my back.Footsteps clacked fast against the marble stairs.Brittany came marching down the steps, her heels clicking loud in the quiet hallway. She folded her arms tight across her chest, her chin tilted up, but her eyes looked red and tired. She stopped right in fron

Valentine The gate rattled from the crash as we walked out onto the porch.Landon moved first, his boots hitting the stone steps hard. Marcus and I stayed right behind him. Clarissa and Layla ran out behind us, their feet fast on the path.Justin’s car sat idling right near the entrance. Smoke came out of the back in steady gray clouds while he revved the engine. His front bumper rested right against the iron bars, scratched up from hitting it."Get back inside, Layla," Marcus said, taking a quick step sideways to block her path."No," Layla said, pushing past his arm. "I'm not hiding in the house while he stands at the gate."Landon didn't stop. He walked straight down the path toward the gate, his hands jammed in his coat pockets, his shoulders broad.Justin threw his car door open and stepped out onto the dirt. He slammed the door shut, kicking a rock toward the fence. His hair was a mess, his jacket wrinkled, and his face red."You think you can hide behind these fake security gu

She pressed her back deeper into the cushions, shoving the phone deep into the gap between the couch seats, acting like she could just pretend it wasn't there.I leaned forward on the cushion, releasing Valentine’s hand. Layla stared straight down at her shoes. Her teeth dug right into her bottom lip until the skin turned pale.Landon moved. His boots hit the floorboards, three steps taking him around the glass table. He stood right over her, his shadow covering her lap and her shakin
