Mondrian

The buzz of voices steadily rose, elder's voices droned on in the meeting room, each one more useless than the last.

“All I'm saying is. We should think twice before doing anything.” An elder insisted, looking everywhere but at me.

“What's there to think about? I say we go in now. Christoff is no match for us.” A more portly elder who looked like he had never seen the grounds of war, urges his double chin shook with every breath, “Our warriors are ready.”

His words elicited another round of passionate discussion about the dangers of rushing, another round of doubts, and to me, another hour being wasted, talking over meaningless garbage.

I didn't have time for this. That much was clear. The deal had been two days. I'd given Alex two days to get the elders on board, two days to prepare the army then we moved, u had no time to wonder about the dangers of rushing nor did I give a damn about traps.

210CeleneI woke up to the sound of something being sharpened, my eyes flew open struggling to adjust to the semi-darkness.My body aches all over, the cold from the rocks seeping into my skin, with a slight groan, I pushed away from the ground, and struggled to sit.Where was I? Why was I here? I wondered, looking around the cage-like space.“I see you've woken up.” A sultry voice purred, caring for my attention. With a gasp I turned to find pecan sitting a few inches away from me, her hands glinted with a dagger the size of my wrist to elbows.Without thinking I shuffled away until the cold stone of the tunnel dug into my back. Memories of the past few hours washed through me, I had fainted from the pain.My hands flew towards the collar, feeling for the crack, and Pecan's eyes narrowed in amusement at my actions.“You were sleeping so peacefully, it was almost cute.” I didn't respond to her, my eyes fixed on the knife, wondering where it had come from. Almost as though she could

208Celene The moment Pecan stepped out of the shadows, like an avenging demon, her eyes fixed on me filled with hate, my blood ran cold.I wasn't the only one who noticed her presence the second mercenary, turned to her, sword drawn “You. What are you doing here.” He growled, “Step back! Alpha Christoff will have your head for this!”Pecan arched her brows in amusement, her steps barely flickering, “Oh will he? I doubt it.”A few of the maids still alive tried to run, I watched in horror as Pecan attacked, pulling them apart like they were made of paper, “No you don't. I didn't want any news of this getting to your Alpha so soon”“That's too late.” The mercenary growled, his hands tighter around the dagger, “The beta was right to suspect you. You've betrayed the pack. I won't let you go.”Pecan's eyes switched between him and me, her lips tugged into a smile. She looked every bit insane, her eyes wild, her body soaked with the blood of the maid, her fangs bared.“I guess we have to

207CeleneThe Seconds turned into minutes, and then hours, with no word from Mondrian and no luck with my collar. The confidence I had gathered, was fizzling faster than boiling water, my heart pounded, my guts clenched, fear was slowly creeping into my heart and looked like it was making a home and yet I kept pushing power into the collar, fingers trembling, jaw clenched. Either due to stubbornness or blind hope I couldn't stop. Christoff's words loomed over my head, like a mass of death, they pushed me and proved me until I became a ball of messy energy.Every time I tried to feel, to use my powers to prove the collar's weakness, a wave of nausea slammed into me, making my head spin and my stomach lurch. I would wait a bit, get my bearings calm my heart, and start again. It was a continuous circle of pain, fear, and nerves, still, I couldn't give up, not when my life, the life of my people Mondrian people was in danger. I couldn't let Christoff win. So I pushed and pushed until my

206Celene Tears spilled down my cheeks before I could stop them and I woke up with a sharp gasp.It had been a dream. All of it the wonderfully memeroty slowly faded into the depths of my mind as reality hit me fast.My body ached—mentally and physically, from hours of struggling against the collar. My fingers were raw, my collarbone bruised, but I hadn't stopped, not until sleep had taken me away and fate had played such a cruel joke on me.I wanted to scream to cry, but I froze when I felt it. Hands touching me, lifting me.No. Disgust churned within my guts, and I thrashed, instinctively. My hands waving, my feet kicking. I didn't care who it hurt.“Get your hands off me!” I screamed, kicking blindly, but the arms around me only tightened.“Relax, Celene,” Christoff’s voice slid over me like oil. “You were sleeping on the floor. I thought I’d do something nice.”The feeling overwhelmed me, my chest tightened and I struggled harder. “Nice? You wouldn't know what that is if it sla

205Celene“Get it off me!” I cried jerking awake, my hands reaching for my neck, searching for the metal collar that was no longer there.Confused I pulled away from the Mattrass my eyes searching round me, at the familiar yet unfamiliar room. Where was I?The room draped with red cotton and brown accent was far different from the room, Christoff had left me in a few hours ago, soft light poured from a window that wasn't barricaded, before I could figure out why it looked familiar the door pushed open and Mondrian walked in.Tall, broad, and real, his golden eyes widened slightly at the sight of me, then filled with a hunger, that took my breath away. “You are awake.” He smiled, dropping the tray he held, before covering the distance between us in two long strides, and pulling me into his arms, “I've missed you.”“Mondrian?” I breathed, leaning into his strong arms, his scent calm and soothing as I wondered what was happening. What about the war? Christoff? How did I even get here?
