Leah awoke frightened and disorientated, her nightmares seemed more frequent now and became more detailed. They always left her light-headed, breathless, and confused. Almost nauseous when she stood up. She had no idea what was going on with her. She had never suffered from nightmares before, so what could have changed?
Leah Stardust was a senior at Birchwood High, who turned eighteen in the next few days. Her mother, Amber, was the owner of Silver Stardust, the esoteric shop in Birchwood that specialized in crystal, Tarot, and Wiccan workshops.
Leah’s routine hadn’t changed since 6th Grade, every morning was the same. Wake up, get dressed, have breakfast, walk with her mother to her store and then and then the short way to school. The forest behind their home had always felt magical to her. That might be because it was her mother’s special place where she cleansed her crystals in either the river between their house and the forest or in the clearing in the forest itself. Her special spot was a rock near the edge of the clearing in the forest.
They’d lived in their current home since Leah was born. Her mother grew up in that house and so did her gran. It was a beautiful big double-story house with cobblestone finishes and a stunning garden. Their street consisted of only a few houses. The one next to theirs had been empty for a while, but a new family had eventually moved in a short while ago.
Leah had only seen the daughter once. She was about Leah’s age, so she would probably see her around at school as Birchwood only had one school due to the town being so small.
Leah was very knowledgeable about the products being sold at her mom’s store and would often give advice on what items could be used for what. Their biggest seller was sage of course… you could never have enough sage.
School holidays began in the next few days and Leah planned on spending most of her holiday chilling at the river helping her mom cleanse her crystals and helping out at her mom’s store. Leah loved working there. She loved to see the different kinds of people who would frequent the store. She loved hearing their stories and seeing which items they purchased and often asked them what they intended to use them for.
The bell of the store tinkled as a regular client entered. The store was cozy and warm. There was something inviting and mysterious about it. Almost magical. There were a variety of items that filled the shelves. Mostly books, crystals, and Wiccan paraphernalia. Amber was proud of the fact that she owned the only esoteric store in Birchwood. A small town situated near Salem.
Amber was a distant relative of Sarah Good, part of the Salem witch trials of 1692. Amber knew all of the historical details and often shared them with clients who queried about them. She had framed pictures all around the store of all of the witches who perished during the trials. A sad and tragic time in history. A time that still saddened Amber. A time she would never forget even though she wasn’t a part of it. Just the thought of it brought tears to her eyes and caused her terrible heartache.
“Hi, Mom!” Called Leah as she entered the store and heard the tinkle of the bell. She loved the sound of the bell for some reason. It always made her feel as if she was coming home. Well, to her second home in a way.
“Hello, Love,” answered Amber as she appeared through the beaded curtain which separated the front of the shore from the workshop areas and back office. Kamali waved at Leah as she helped a client find their desired items. The store was buzzing.
Amber’s eyes shone like that of a wolf’s, her auburn hair hung down her back in waves of lush curls, the complete opposite of Leah’s jet black straight long hair and bright green slightly slanted eyes. Leah often marveled at just how beautiful her mom was. She never seemed to age. At forty-seven she still looked not a day older than thirty-two. Leah hoped that that would be the same case for her. She shuddered at the thought of getting old and looking her actual age. She wanted to be young forever.
Amber wore a white boho chic dress that looked like a traveling gypsy. The dress showed off her perfect figure. Leah could only pray that she had inherited her mother’s genes.
“It’s so nice to see you here today,” commented Kamili Duke, Amber’s oldest and dearest friend who helped run the various workshops offered at Silver Stardust. “You must be happy that it’s almost summer break… and your birthday.”
“You have no idea how excited I am about summer break. My birthday not so much,” said Leah, who didn’t like to make a fuss about her birthdays. She followed her mom toward the back office. “I’ve just about had enough of school and all of the drama. Kids can be so petty sometimes. The girls always babble on about boys and the boys act like mucho jocks. They’re all idiots!” Leah was quite red in the face after her outburst, her passion showing through.
Kamili laughed at Leah, sounding much older than seventeen. Leah didn’t look like most seventeen-year-old girls. She had a maturity to her that often surprised her mom. Amber always commented that Leah had an ‘old soul’, something which no one could deny. Leah just seemed more mature and still had an innocence about her. Something Amber was really proud of.
Kamali helped the last client in the store and then followed Leah and Amber as they entered the back office. The store was empty and the bell would announce a client’s presence should someone enter.
The back rooms smelt of sage and Jasmine, Leah’s favorite smells. Leah loved spending time at Silver Stardust. She felt at home there, as if she belonged among the various items on the shelves. The store brought her a sense of calm. It should, seeing as she went straight there after school each day.
There were no workshops planned for most of the week, but Saturday and Sunday were fully booked. Leah often helped out with setting up the rooms for the various workshops. The Tarot ones were her favorite. Leah herself dabbled in some Tarot readings but did it mostly for herself and some friends at school. Everyone knew about her mom and loved the fact that Leah was following in her mom’s footsteps. Leah hoped to someday take over the store and was learning as much as she possibly could about how the business ran. Planning ahead she readied herself for that day.
Leah sat in on as many workshops as possible and learned about crystals, Tarot, and Wiccan lore.
Leah had started her own grimoire, but it was nothing compared to the one that her mom owned.
Amber’s book was a beautiful representation of Wicca and Leah could feel its power whenever she was allowed to touch it or page through it. Leah would often spend hours with her mom going through new information to add to her grimoire. She learned more about her heritage as she went along. But Leah wasn’t a practicing witch like her mom, her powers hadn’t manifested yet.
Leah’s most fascinating thing in the backroom was the glass cabinet where Amber kept her rare Wiccan items. Items that held such power that they could change the world. It contained one of the oldest grimoires and Leah felt its pull every time she passed the cabinet. Her mom had however made her promise to never go near it for its power was far too great for Leah to handle.
Leah longingly passed the glass cabinet towards her mom’s office which was decorated with all things Wiccan. Leah marveled at the room every time she entered it. She loved its smell and all that it contained. There was always a new item added. One that Amber had either purchased or been gifted by another witch.Leah noticed that her mom had a new tarot deck sitting on a shelf in her office. “Where did you get this from, Mom? I’ve never seen it before.” Asked Leah intrigued to know its origin. Dying to take a look at it. To feel the card against her skin and to take in the intricate symbols and drawings.“I purchased it from an auction house. It was a steal as they had no idea just how precious it really was.” Answered Amber, she smiled fondly as she remembered the feeling of joy she experienced when she held the item for the first time. Its power hummed through her from her head to her toes.“What makes it so special, Mom?” Asked Leah, as she hoped to learn more about the special Taro
Amber decided to stay longer after the store had closed as there was some paperwork and arrangements that she wanted to take care of. Something that she didn’t want to leave until the next morning.Leah got home and went to lie down on her bed. She tossed and turned but couldn’t seem to fall asleep. She also felt bad for leaving her mom alone at the store to handle the load of paperwork, so she decided to go back to help her.Leah unlocked and opened the front door of Silver Stardust, causing the bell to tinkle, and noticed that her mother was not at the front desk. She must have been in the back getting the rooms ready for her workshops on Saturday. Amber always took such pride in her work and Leah had learned to do the same. She couldn’t have asked for a better role model. As she entered through the curtain separating the front and back areas, she realized that her mother was not alone. She could distinctly hear two voices. She tried to make out who was there with her mom, but all
She was running through a forest, it was dark and damp outside. The sky was crystal clear, the stars were big and beautiful. Her lungs were burning as she ran faster than she ever had before, and her legs were screaming for her to stop aching in places she never knew were possible. But she couldn’t stop. She had to find it. Something was calling for her, but she had no clue as to what is was. All she knew was that she couldn't stop running. The urgency of the matter pushed her faster and faster. Further into the forest. Further to what was calling her. Something she desperately had to get to.Wait. She knew this forest. It was the one behind her home. She looked down and noticed that she was wearing full leather fighting gear. Gear that she knew she didn’t own, hadn’t even seen in stores nearby. She’d seen similar outfits in the books in her mother's store but that was it. The books she loved to page through over and over again. Never getting tired of the imagery and stories. W
Leah woke up gasping for air, her lungs on fire. She was drenched in sweat from head to toe. She was so exhausted that she could barely lift her head. Where was she? What had just happened? She tried to calm down but she felt disoriented and extremely weak. "Leah! Love, are you okay?" Leah’s mom was by her side and so was Kamali. "We were so worried about you and we had no way of stopping your nightmare. You shook as I’ve never seen anyone shake before. It looked as if you were having a seizure." "Mom, where am I? What happened?" Leah spoke, almost in a croaky whisper. Her throat burned like fire and she was still out of breath. Whatever she’d just gone through had taken it all out of her. She felt empty and exhausted. "You passed out at the store. We were busy bandaging up your hand when you blacked out on the bed. We tried, but there was nothing that we could do to stop it." Her mom was shaking as she spoke. Leah had never seen her so concerned before, and it scared Leah t
Amber went all out and set up a special ritual for Leah’s birthday. It would be a celebration of her life and a spiritual rite of passage to her future. She had saged one of the rooms in the back of her store and laid out an altar in it. The altar sat upon a low black wooden table. The red silk cloth hung over the edges and upon it lay crystals, sage, moon water, and a scrying bowl. Amber was busy bringing in her grimoire when Leah arrived at the store. Excitement buzzed in the air. Amber had waited for this day for so many years and played out exactly what she wanted to happen a million times in her head. She had only one chance at this ritual and she wanted it to go on without a hitch. The store bell tinkled as Leah entered. The store was dimly lit by candles. Leah knew that no one else would be joining them so she turned and locked the door behind her, smiling when she took in the smell of Jasmine. Amber was busy laying the last items on the altar as Leah entered the room and ca
Emerald was angered by the actions of the Goddess. How dare she act in that way. Emerald had done all that she could to keep the twins apart and now the Goddess had foiled her plans by letting a vision of Leah come through to Abigail. How on earth was she supposed to keep a lid on the secret if the Goddess kept intervening? Emerald knew that Abigail was still shaken by what she saw. Abigail seemed withdrawn and perplexed. She’d spent most of the following day locked up in her bedroom which concerned Emerald as she had never seen her do that before. Abigail sat at her desk, still visibly upset about what she had seen in the scrying bowl. “Who could that have been?” Wondered Abigail aloud to herself. “She most definitely wasn’t me. I’m one hundred percent sure of that. She might have looked like me but there were subtle differences that showed me that she was a different person altogether.” Abigail had a sneaky suspicion that her mother wasn’t being completely honest with her. Was she
Abigail eventually came out of her bedroom, searching for her mother. She looked around the house but couldn’t find her. She knew that the only other place she could possibly be was in their greenhouse where they grew all of their herbs and spices. Abigail made her way out of the backdoor of their house and walked the few paces to their greenhouse. As she came closer she heard her mother whispering to someone. Abigail peeped into the greenhouse and saw that Emerald was on a phone call. Emerald was speaking to someone with a heated tone. “I need you to keep a close eye on her. There is no way that they could ever meet. It would be detrimental to both of them should that ever happen. They can never know of one another for there would be great ramifications should they ever join forces.” Emerald sensed that she was being watched and immediately hung up the phone call. Abigail hid around the corner of the greenhouse but she knew that it was futile for Emerald had amazing powers and w
Leah woke to the feeling of being watched again. She looked over to her window sill but saw no Raven. She felt heavy in her heart as if something wasn’t right, yet she couldn’t quite put her finger on it. Leah sat up in bed and wiped the sleep from her eyes. She hadn't slept well at all, nightmares stirred her from her sleep. She felt exhausted. The events from the previous day played through her mind as she made to get out of bed. Today was a big day for Leah. Today her training would begin and she looked rather forward to it. Leah stretched before swinging her legs over the side of the bed. She felt a bit lightheaded but thought nothing of it. She made to get up but had to sit back down for she felt rather faint. Leah sat for a while taking deep breaths before she made to stand up again, this time feeling fine. She made her way to her bathroom, combed her hair, and brushed her teeth. It was still so foreign seeing two different colour eyes looking back at her, but she decided t
