The afternoon sun had shifted by the time Leona entered the boardroom. The long table gleamed under the overhead lights, already lined with her department heads and managers. Papers rustled, laptops clicked open, and the quiet chatter died down the moment she walked in.

“Good afternoon,” she said smoothly, sliding into her seat at the head of the table. Her voice carried enough weight to silence any lingering whispers.

“Afternoon, Miss Sterling,” they echoed almost in unison.

Leona set her folder on the table and opened it. “Let’s begin. Reports, finance first.”

A man in a gray suit cleared his throat and rose halfway, holding his notes. His voice wavered slightly as he spoke about quarterly growth and projections. Leona listened without blinking, her pen tapping lightly against her pad.

When he finished, she leaned forward. “Your numbers show growth, but your expenses in the last two weeks have doubled. Why?”

He stammered, flipping through his notes. “W...we had a few unexpected cost

NEXT DAYThe late morning sun slipped through the silk curtains of Dorian's mansion, painting soft golden streaks across the large bedroom. Selene stirred, her hair tumbling across the pillows as she lazily reached for her phone on the nightstand. She blinked at the bright screen, scrolling through her notifications with half-lidded eyes.A headline made her freeze. Her thumb hovered above the screen, her breath catching.“Ashford Matriarch Faces Accusations: Charity Funds Misused for Personal Gain”Selene bolted upright, the silk sheet sliding down to her waist. Her wide eyes darted across the article. Every word pulled her deeper into disbelief, then shock, then a sly, almost relieved smile.“They’re blaming Emilia?” she whispered to herself, lips curling. She quickly skimmed the opening lines: how the gala had raised a “record-breaking sum” meant for underprivileged children, but according to inside sources, the funds never reached the charity’s accounts. Instead, Emilia Ashford wa

The steam still lingered in the air when Leona stepped out of the bathroom, her robe tied neatly around her waist. Droplets of water clung to her hair, sliding down her neck as she padded barefoot across the floor. The city lights spilled through the tall windows, painting her room in soft gold. She sat on the edge of her bed, running a towel slowly through her damp hair. For a while, she stayed quiet, breathing deeply, as though washing away the noise of the gala. But her peace didn’t last.Emilia’s face came back to her mind. Her voice. Her denial.Leona’s jaw tightened. She dropped the towel onto the bed and reached for the phone on her nightstand. Her thumb hovered over the screen, over the folder she had hidden, files, messages, receipts. The evidence she had collected of Emilia’s visits to that doctor. The quiet little scheme to feed her those anti-fertility drugs when she was still Dorian’s wife. Her reflection stared back from the dark glass of the window. A woman who had su

The music had shifted into something lighter, a soft hum that filled the gaps between laughter and clinking glasses. Guests moved in pairs and clusters, their eyes flicking between the stage and the center of the room where Selene glided, her silver gown trailing like liquid light. She had spotted Leona again. And this time, Selene didn’t hesitate. With a glass of champagne in hand, she crossed the floor, her smile wide, her steps smooth. To everyone else, she was the perfect hostess moving to greet a guest. But her eyes gave her away, sharp, gleaming, hungry.“Leona,” Selene purred, her voice carrying just enough to catch the attention of the tables nearby. “I’m so glad you could come tonight. It wouldn’t have been complete without you.”Leona, standing near a tall table with Melissa beside her, turned her head slowly. Her expression was calm, unreadable, her emerald gown shimmering under the lights. She didn’t smile.“Selene.” Her voice was soft but steady, like glass that could cut

CHARITY GALA NIGHTThe night air was cool, carrying the faint hum of the city. Outside Leona’s home, her driver stood by the black car, waiting with the door already open.Inside, Leona gave her reflection one last glance in the tall mirror. The emerald silk gown clung to her figure like it was made for her alone, its deep green shimmering with every movement. The neckline was elegant but bold, dipping just enough to command attention without crossing into excess. Her hair was pulled back in a sleek twist, her diamond earrings catching the light each time she turned. She adjusted the bracelet on her wrist, then reached for her small clutch. For a moment, she stood still, her gaze steady, her breath calm. This wasn’t Selene’s night. It was hers the moment she stepped into that ballroom.“Miss Leona, the car is ready,” her driver’s voice came softly from outside the door.Leona walked out with her usual poise, heels clicking against the marble floor of the foyer. When the driver opened

NEXT MORNING: LEONA'S OFFICEThe late morning light spilled into Leona's office, warming the polished wood of her desk. She had just finished signing the last document when a sharp knock sounded on the door.“Come in,” Leona said, her tone calm, her eyes still fixed on the papers. The door opened, and Dana stepped inside. She was holding a cream-colored envelope in her hand, her expression already betraying what it was before she even spoke.“Special delivery,” Dana said dryly, walking closer and setting the envelope right on the edge of Leona’s desk. “Guess who sent it.”Leona finally lifted her gaze. Her eyes flicked to the envelope, then back to Dana. “Selene.”Dana nodded, lips pressed into a thin line. “She’s throwing a charity gala. Your name is on the list.”Leona leaned back in her chair, folding one leg neatly over the other. She didn’t touch the envelope. “Charity,” she murmured, her voice carrying a hint of amusement. “That woman doesn’t know the meaning of the word.”Dana
